Topic: What was your first ever job? Posted: 27 May 2008 at 7:36pm |
Mona (DSD) wants to get a job at Countdown, and it got Willie and I reminiscing about our first jobs.
His was during the school holidays cleaning up at the forestry where his Dad worked for $1 an hour.
Mine was a local paper run at $3 a week. Then I worked at New World for $5.15 an hour.
What was yours?

I did the paper run thing when I was about 11, my first real job would have been when I was 15 or so, I worked in a rest home as their evening cleaner...

I worked for my mothers company helping out in the office I think I got something like $8 an hour. That was in the school holidays etc.
My first proper job was a nanny in Baltimore Maryland, I was 17, I looked after a 4, 5 and 3mth old I got $110 a week. It was a great job, I got to travel around the East Coast of the States. Then I moved to Kansas City and did housesitting for 3 months.
When I got home I was nearly 19 and I worked at Quality Inn Rosepark in Parnell, I worked as a housemaid and also helped with conferences. I got $12 an hour.

My first job started when I was 8, working for my dad cleaning his factory, sweeping it up for .50c! I did that once a week. .50c was heaps back then (1988), I could get a HUGE bag of lollies!!
Then I upgraded to a paperun once a week, but can't remember how much I got paid as my sister & I shared the run so split the earnings. It wasn't much though.
But what I would call my first PROPER job, was at Countdown, Bayfair! As a checkout chick when I was 15, working after school and on Saturdays. Got paid something like $6 something an hour.... I think.

When I was about 10 I worked for my dad in the holidays doing car inspections.. I'd help check the lights, indicators and turn the car over (wouldn't start) so dad could do the compression check and I got $1 per car and he did 7 cars per day so I got a good haul in a short period
When I was 13 I did a paper and leaflet run and earned about $20 per fortnight
At 15 I worked at Kids N Action (anyone remember them?) as a Party 'Consultant' LOL and got about $7 per hour

Excluding occasionally helping my mum and dad at their businesses my first job was when I was 17, I worked for NZ Natural Icecream as the weekend supervisor. I don't have a clue what I was paid.. about $7.50/$8.00ish.

Paper round, then I worked for my parents in their shop (if sleeping off a hangover in the stock room every saturday morning counts as working). First real job though was working in a change booth at an amusement arcade.

I used to do stuff around the farm like grubbing thistles in the holidays, or helping dad with the shearing. But first proper job was working in a cafe from the age of 13 - got $4.75/hr to start with.

I used to do lots of babysitting when I was younger for friends of the family - loved it! Plus it was about $20 a night which was pretty good for just sitting down watchin TV!
I also worked once a week at our soccer clubrooms cooking the hot chips and running the food bar selling lollies etc.
My first 'proper' job was at Big Fresh/Woolworths, where I worked for under a year and moved to McDonalds where I got paid way more than I was getting at Big Fresh at the time!

Delivery the Herald when I was 12 got a huge $27 a week that was a lot of money in 1982. Got first adult job when I turned 15 and became a packer at Woolworths St Lukes on a whole $3 an hour. There was no Sunday trading back then only worked late night Thurs and Sat.

I did the local paper delivery thing too, and then moved on up to babysitting for $5 an hour. I was 15 and thought my $20 a week was SO much money!
