Topic: How Often Does Your DH Go Away Posted: 27 May 2008 at 8:02pm |
For work?
My DH is a senior Hydrological Officer, and measures river flow around Canterbury.
He hasn't been away for a few months, but is going to be away from Wed - Friday. I know that I can cope, it's just 3 days

He goes away for work every 2nd Tuesday but he's back the same day. Sometimes I wish he'd go away for longer
Have you got people down there that can help you out with the girls?

My DH is in the navy so has the tendency to go away for weeks on end (he used to go away for 5-6 months at a time) . Thankfully at the moment he's working on base & only goes to sea occassionaly for a week at the most. He's waiting on one of the new boats that is still being built at the moment but it's taking forever. I'm not complaining.

Yes, we are extremely lucky to have DH's parents only 10 mins away... they were over the fence at our old house, very handy indeed.
Have invited them over for tea on Thursday night to help out!
What line of work is your DH in .Mel?

Not often enough!
He never goes away for work but occasionally he goes away for the weekend drinking with his mates.
My dad used to be away Sun night to Fri night for years when we were growing up and mum had 4 of us under 5 to cope with

DH never goes away, for work or socially! He does go to night class on Thursday nights and although I cope I do miss him and the help with Jack's nighttime routine as he does half of it normally. I have great respect for Mums or Dads that cope on their own for days, weeks or months at a time, you are stonger people than me!

The night time routine is the hardest when you are by yourself, I will be tomorrow night, also days are long when Lucy hasn't got Monterssorri, oh well!

Mine has been away for nearly 5 months now.
Even when we do move up to be with him he will still be away a lot including a trip overseas.

My DH doesn't go away very often (thankfully cause I hate being home alone over night). He's going on a marae stay in a couple of weeks so I'm going to stay with the IL's

Its not actually that bad, I just have issues with Andrew. I don't mind being on my own (don't think I could be without children) and the best thing is I have all of the bed to myself (until I get a 4 year old visitor during the night).

My DH doesn't go 'away' as such. He works nights tho so I don't actually see him at all except to say goodbye in the morning (when I leave) and on the weekends.
In our prior life before we started this routine I used to hate it when DH went away so I'd make plans to do things I could only do when he wasn't here. Why not rent a really girly movie to watch once the girls are in bed and treat yourself to a couple of housework free days (not including dishes and washing of course).
Go easy on yourself and enjoy.

Another military wife here...
Daniel has been away over 2 of the 4 years we have been together, including 3 overseas trips (1 at only 18hours notice for 6 1/2 months). He's been away for a month now except for 1 weekend that they came back to restock supplies. He gets back on Thursday so that'll be good (except he goes to Germany for 6 weeks soon). I hated it when I was by myself but I feel badly for Jack as he's going to miss out as he grows up (I've seen it happen to my cousins with my uncle being in the army too).
I guess you do what you've gotta do to survive. I find it so easy when he's still in the country, but struggle when he's on deployment as he's been bombed, shot at etc before.
I'm hoping my DH goes away next year so we can get some more money. Defence force doesn't exactly pay well.

He only goes away very occasionally for work and I think the longest it's ever been was 3 nights. I'm a sook and I hate it when he's away!
