Mmm... banana bread... sounds delicious! I have a chilli style spaghetti sauce in the slow cooker, will just put some pasta on the stove later on and that's that.

So tired but a bit nervous waiting for the right time to ring my GP and get the blood test results (4:30pm)...

Didnt bake the banana bread in the end. Just the date bread. Well by now I guess you called and found out the results. Have to clean the whole house and car today and pack for camp and then get ready for the scan at 3:30. Hoping that bubs is big enough for us to at least see something.

For Christmas I have my parents coming from South Africa and we have some friends join us as well. But I might be throwing up by that stage so they will have to do the food. My sense of smell is started to go hyper on me but not getting nauseous yet. Last time it happened only at 9 weeks and stopped at 13 weeks.

Hi Pearls,

Thanks for the offer of the pack, I will take you up on it - and the coffee too. It would be great to talk to someone who has been through it all and is at the same stage as me too.

I live in Narrow Neck - where are you? Also, get that you're not a kiwi either, where are you from?

What was the blood test result? Hope all is well!

Hi Liz, I'm in Beach Haven :) And yes you are right - I'm from Canada but an 'old timer', have been living her since 1994! Not that you'd know it when I open my mouth LOL

My blood test result was OK, on the low side but still rising just fine and 'tracking' evenly (you can plot HCG levels on a chart if you really want). I won't be getting any more tests though, as I spent most of yesterday afternoon freaking out!

Shirena - good luck for your scan!!

The thought of that banana bread is divine! I can't get over how hungry I am this week. I'll eat something (nutritious!) and think I'm full at 2 hours later I'll be really hungry again. DH is worried that I'll gain too much, but I'm being good and filling up on fruit and veggies. I'm off to my nutritionist tomorrow, and will recruit her help in keeping things under control.

Had a mad morning at work this morning, but sat down now and feeling a bit calmer. How's everyone else this morning?

Hi everyone

So glad I found this forum….
Expecting first baby. Got my 2 lines Monday nearly 2 weeks ago (after 4 years of trying and not giving up), so I guess it’s still sinking in… with morning sickness, nausea and interesting appetite it’s becoming a reality though.
From the various online calculators counting I should be due middle of July.
The thing is that I haven’t been to a doctor, nor have any midwife, nor don’t know where I want to deliver…. We’ve got no family here & most of our friends are just couples spread all over Auckland. Though living here for 6 years I went to see a doctor twice only so really don’t know much about health system.
Sorry to bother you with such basics but any advise would be great…

I’m pretty sure I want to deliver in hospital – but which one? From what I have found online there are 2 options – National Woman’s or North Shore – which one is better or how do I choose though? Do I need to decide now?

Could anyone recommend a midwife in west Auckland? I found Maternity Matters… are they good? Someone recommended in previous posts to start talking to midwives to find out which one would be better – hmm, I wouldn’t have a clue what to watch out for and how to find out which one is better (it must be so much easier second time around….)

Sorry for such a long post…. Guess I have millions of questions…. Well, first-timer :-)

Thanks in advance and all the best to all of you!!

Hi ladies
I agree morning sickness is awful - I had it on and off with Lily but with this baby its 24/7 can't seem to shake it.
We are 8 weeks today - yay and we have booked a midwife - so thats cool.

HI TK,

Congratulations on your BFP! Very exciting, I can imagine how pleased you are. I'm a first timer too, and got my BFP earlier this week after 18 mths of trying.

I'm also trying to figure out this mid-wife deal. My doctor (who has just recently taken over the practice from our great doctors) was crap. But the ladies on here are fabulous, and no doubt you'll get some great advice in no time! Perhaps call one or two mid-wives and ask for advice on the protocol of who to call and when - if you get someone who can spend some time chatting with you on what you should be doing then I would guess you're on the right track to finding a goodie!

Hope you're day is going well, and you're feeling good!

Hi TK, and big congrats on your BFP! If I were you I would probably go to my GP and get the pregnancy confirmed, they will likely do/send you off for blood tests. While you are there ask them all the questions you have (I find it good to write all my questions down before I go so I don't forget things). They should give you a pregnancy pack which will have a heap of info on maternity services etc. If they don't ask for one. Oh and your doc visit should be free as well, as all maternity services are free.

Liz, I found a number in my pregnancy pack that might interest you - 0800 MUM 2 BE, apparently they can give you info on LMC (Lead maternity carers) in your area.

Hope everyone is feeling ok today, unfortunately I'm not, slightly green tinge to my face today, so much so I got sent home from work, had to tell a few people at work, can't get away with it much longer, especially due to our sickness policies (due to the fact I work with food, no-one is happy if a sick chef is at work).

Shirena - how did your scan go?? Thinking of you.

TK - welcome! I second going to a doctor to confirm things, and going from there.

I'm not sure about your birthing options, you could deliver at hospital or even at home - and you could try to find out if you'd be eligible to go to Birthcare too http://www.birthcare.co.nz

You could start by ringing Maternity Matters and just ask for some advice, I'm sure they'd be happy to help. I think midwifery in NZ is a small world so if you speak to one person but they can't help you themselves, they are bound to know someone else you can try.

Feeling exhausted here after a very busy day, so glad DD is in bed as she was heading for Meltdown City. Have acupuncture treatment in the morning, then going to get me some of those Seabands as this nausea is kicking my arse (as is the fatigue).

Gotta get the spare room and house ship shape this weekend too, as my MIL is coming to visit at the end of next week - should be good fun though (she lives overseas so we don't see her often at all).

Hi all,

Its been another couple of days so lots to catch up on! Welcome to the newbies and congrats on all the good results!

TK - it sounds like you're out west - so you will probably go to Waitakere hosp - where you go depends on where you live and what hospital the midwife/doc you choose is aligned to. I'm out west but my GP (LMC) is in devonport, so I had Jake at North Shore and will be going there again this time too, as thats where my doc delivers. Most of my friends out this way have a westie midwife though, so they are all going to Waitakere ... and I know a few people from my coffee gorup who had a central specialist (due to complications etc) so had to go to Ak hospital. Like the others have said - go to a doc and they will point you in the right direction. If they're not helpful, get out the local phone book and start ringing some midwives. You are really just looking for someone who has similar views to you (re natural birth, pain relief etc) and that you are comfortable with. She will be there for one of most difficult (and initmate, and amazing) moments of your life, so make sure its someone you like! And trust with your body / baby.

Midwives seem to book up really fast out west - so you'll want to get on to it quickly. I think Maternity Matters are meant to be good. There is a team at Waitakere called KYM (know your midwife) too.

Re north shore docs - my doc is on the shore and hands out all the preggie info / forms etc. She still delivers though, so is probably more on to it than most! Saw her today for my 8 week check .... she wants me back in 2 weeks cos we'll be able to hear the heart beat then (a little too early today). Bit of a pain, but I think she is just wanting to keep an eye on me as I had a few complications last time, and haven't had an early scan.

Re the 12 week scan - it can actually be done from 11 weeks (to 14), so you may be able to get it done just before Xmas and still have the nucal testing done.

My nausea and tiredness are getting better, thankfully!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Bad news on my part I'm afraid - I started bleeding and cramping yesterday afternoon and it's still going now. It's so early, and still a shock having only just found out in the past week that I'm pregnant and now am losing it.

I've had blood test today, and the results tomorrow should confirm what I already know.

I wish everyone here a healthy and safe pregnancy, and hope to join a later 2009 birth group.

Liz xx

Scan was okay. Didnt see bubs. Only measuring 5 weeks and saw the gestational sac and egg yolk. So not very exciting ect. And they kept on saying so they cant say that it is a viable pregnancy. And I am like duh well until I have a life baby in my arms no one can tell me if this is a viable pregnancy. Told Grant if this was our first pregnancy I would have been seriously freaked at their attitude to be quite honest.

Oh Liz honey, I'm really sorry to hear your news Would you still like to meet up for coffee sometime when you're up to it?

Shirena - even if it wasn't my first pregnancy I would have said something about that kind of remark, I know they are trying to cover their arses but it is not very reassuring!

*waves at Fats*

Got me some Seabands and I *think* they are doing the trick - put them on this morning and haven't taken them off, and have hardly felt nauseous all day (just tired). Now the countdown is on for my scan on Thursday morning!

I am really starting to worry that I dont feel pregnant. I was so broody this year and now when I told my PC mums that I am actually pregnant it felt like someone else telling them. It just doesnt feel the same as with McKayla.

I dont know if it is just because I am still worried we will miscarry and that I am trying to protect myself from it. Or if it is because it is my second child so I am just really busy with McKayla, or if it is the fact that Grant is so busy at work and doesnt seem to get into it as such.

Anyone else feeling like this at all? MIL keeps on asking how I am and if she should come over to help me. But honestly help with what? I am pregnant that is all. (although I dont feel pregnant). Guess that tune might change when I start puking everywhere. (at least then I might start believing I am pregnant).

So sorry to hear your news Liz, look after yourself hun!

Shirena, I am soo feeling the same as you (apart from the fact that I do feel a bit pukey), I think its me trying not to work myself up in case something goes wrong. And I also have been thinking maybe its because its my 2nd pregnancy and I am busy with work and Elle. I still don't even know my EDD, and my sister seems more worried about it than I am.

Will you go back for another scan?

Feeling soooo tired today, Dh was away for the weekend and Elle was up and down all night on Fri and Sat ( for what reason I have no idea - maybe teeth), so am probably heading off to bed very shortly.

Pearls do you think the seabands are worth it, might have to get some for myself.

ETA - change some bad spelling
