Topic: Milk feeds at 1 year old Posted: 14 January 2009 at 2:02pm |
I just got back from visiting Mrs Plunket, and she said that at 1 year old, babies should only be having about 400mls of formula a day, in 2 milk feeds. Including whatever is on weetbix etc for breakfast.
How much did your baby drink at one year old, and at what times?
I'm confused about when to do it, cos when I asked her about times, she said morning and afternoon tea, plus maybe before bed. At the moment he has one first thing (just cos that's easier and nicer to have snuggles in bed IYKWIM and gives me time to wake up), has another at about 3/4pm depending what time he wakes up, and then another before bed at 7pm. He drinks about 200mls in the morning (actually I make up 250 and whatever he doesn't drink he has on weetbix), and maybe about 150 in the afternoon and about 100 before bed... I dunno, it varies. So I know I probably need to cut down, but I think if I only gave it twice a day he wouldn't drink 200 each time ya know? He still eats a decent-ish breakfast (an hour after his bottle), but I've noticed he hasn't been eating as much as he used to.... so wondering if I should swap and having breakfast first and then milk before or after his morning sleep.
Oh also, did anyone move their baby completely onto cows milk at 1 yr? I'm going to start doing half half I think but there's still a part of me (probably the part that's bought into advertising and consumerism) questioning whether he still needs the other 'stuff' that's in formula IYKWIM.

We still give formula for his milk feeds because its conveniant and cheaper for us but put normal cows milk on cereal etc.
We were down to 2 feeds I think at about a year. One around breakfast time and one before bed with just water given during the day and at lunch

Thanks Stacey - can you remember how much he was drinking at each feed? And was the morning one before or after breakfast?

We do it after, always have since about 8 months old. We haven't really changed the amounts. 180 for breakfast and 240 for bed time. The only reason its these amounts is that we use S26 and its one scoop per 60ml so it makes it easy for us.

Hi Liz! Wow - can't believe Harry is 1 already. I hear he's a real cutie too.
By 1, Matt was down to 2 milk feeds a day of 200ml each - 1 at 7am when he woke up followed by breakfast at 8 & 1 just before bed time. He still has his morning milk drink now. We use toddler milk (possibly sucked in by all the hype!! plus he's a bit of a fussy eater, so not sure if he's getting everything he needs from his diet). When he was little, if I didn't use the toddler milk, I bought that junior milk (I think that's what it's called) with extra calcium etc in it.

Hi Nicki! I know I can't believe he's turning 1 tomorrow... this year has gone way too fast. Not long now til Isabella's 1st birthday too! I saw photos of her at Aunty Win's (when she was alot younger) and she's beautiful.
Yeah I think what I'll do is just cut out that afternoon milk, and just give him a bottle morning and night. He probably won't drink 200mls each time, but the milk on his weetbix should make up for it. Oh and I can give him yoghurt as well, forgot about that. I'm still undecided about whether to swap the breakfast one around or not so I think I'll just see how it goes.

Hey Liz, you've probably already picked this up from Jan/Feb thread, but...
Hannah has three milk feeds a day.
One is a breastfeed - at 8am, after a brekkie of toast/weetbix (with cow's milk) and fruit of some kind.
The second is about 200mls of cow's milk.
And the third is anywhere between 150mls and 220mls of cow's milk.
I've only just stopped my nightly BF as she was quite difficult to feed and would get next to nothing from me.
I started offering her a BF then topping her up with cow's milk, but since stopped the BF and upped her cow's milk intake to compensate.
However, since cutting out the nightly BF she's been waking an hour earlier in the morning, starving.
So I'm thinking of giving her formula as her last nightly feed and seeing how she goes.

We are still on 3 bottles with Lauren, morning, afternoon one just before her nap and then bedtime. Morning and afternoon are 160mls and bedtime is 240mls.
I am not about to drop any of her bottles until winter as I think she needs the extra hydration and the arvo bottle relaxes her for nap time!
She has been on cows milk since the day of her frist birthday! Now she won't drink formula at all!!
Oh and Lauren is 15 months old, must update my ticker soon!

Hey Liz,
Haven't had a good read of what everyone else wrote but about a week ago I cut Harry down to 2 bottles a day of 200ml each.
He has his weetbix, cows milk and banana for brekky, then his bottle 30min after. Then his other one is just before bed of 200ml.
We are still on formula at this stage but will try cows milk soon. Just started giving him cows milk in his breakfast and he seems fine with that so we will change soon.

I've been very pedantic about cutting down Jack's feeds as I was told they should only be having 2 lots of 'dairy' a day at 1 year so...
Jack only has 1 bottle (before bed - 200ml), sometimes 2 if he's at daycare.
He has about 100-150ml on his cereal if he has cereal that day, and a piece of cheese or a yoghurt at lunch. So that's 3 lots of dairy really, but 2 are smaller.
I would say definitely swap the milk/breakfast thing around, he'll get rid of that feed if he has brekkie first. I was always told to cut daytime feeds, then morning, then night if that helps.
And yep we are on straight cows milk, as long as they have a full and varied diet, the 'extra' nutrients are a crock. But check to see which is cheaper - if he still has a lot of formula then it'll probably be cheaper for you to stay on that. For us its cheaper on proper milk (and a lot easier).

Gina has been and still is on 3 bottles a day, one in the morning, one after her afternoon sleep and one before bedtime. Sometimes, she'll refuse to have one of them but most of the time she'll be asking to have her bottles. She has about 200ml in each
I'm not too worried about what Plunket say

two bottles!! man Holly is a milkiholic - she just wouldn't cope with only 2 - she still has 3 and some days 4 bottles of 180-200 mls... My plunket nurse was so hopeless I gave up going - maybe I shouldn't have and I would have known she's only suppose to have 2!!
Emz - I agree re: price we changed holly to cows milk and realised formula would have been cheaper with the amount she drinks... but I'm loving how easy cows milk is!

Keziah has between 2 and 3 200ml bottles a day....
One with her morning tea at 10am just before her nap (I find it helps to settle her down enough so she'll fall asleep once I put her in her bed), sometimes she has a nap in the afternoon but not often cause she's dropping one and i want it to be that one so we can get out and do somethings in the afternoons so again I use it as that calming agent, and then before bed

At 1yr my girls didn't have milk feeds any more, certainly DD1 was not interested but it just kinda happened for the others. They would have milk on their cereal for breakfast and usually a piece or two of cheese with cracker(s) for morning tea. They would also have a milo with breakfast (half milk)

The "Ask the Experts" section had a link to an article on how much calcium a one year old needs in their diet - it's an interesting read that helped to answer all the questions I had when DS turned one.

Miss E still has 3 bottles of formula a day. She's on neocate, due to dairy allergies so gets most of her calcium through her formula.
We`always do bottles after food though, as it means she eats more.

Lachie had two a day at 1. first 200ml before his late morning nap and the second before bed time in the evening. I think if he had two naps during the day i would have spread the milk out to give him three bottles as it was part of his bed routine and relaxed him.

I am just trying Daniel on cows milk today, but with S26 stage 3 in the afternoon.
Daniel has been having breakfast first just this week, he has 2 weetbix (with cows milk has been since he was 8 months) and then his milk about 1/2 hour after - this morning he only had 180ml of milk (normally I would make 240ml of formula and he would leave some) I will give him 180ml again this afternoon if he wants it and then tonight the S26 stage 3 before bed.
Nice to see this thread I was a bit up in the air as to wither what I was doing was okay!!!

I wouldn't worry too much about plunkets recommendations.....after all the are just RECOMMENDATIONS!!! And every baby is different.
My pluket said 500-600ml a day which would be a whole EXTRA feed of milk if you were following her advice.
So just take it with a grain of salt and not worry too much.
My daughter is still having 3-4 milk feeds a day (cows milk)....usually 3 but if she wakes in the night I give her a 4th. Usually 120-150ml each time (although I'm sure she'd have more given the chance!!!) and around 270ml at bedtime!!
The other tip Plunket gave me on Wed was you can always WATER DOWN the cows milk......good to give baby some extra water in this hot weather.
