Topic: HUNGRY! Posted: 16 February 2009 at 1:59pm |
Hello everyone,
I just found out I am pregnant last week, and over the last few days I have had food cravings for bread and carbs, am eating more bread than I have for ages.
I am sure its just psychological, as my personal trainer tells me I shouldn't really need to be eating anymore than normal at this stage, but a friend told me that she ate heaps of carbs in the first trimester to stop herself feeling sick, and she put on alot of weight in that time. I read somewhere that you shouldn't put on much weight at all first twelve weeks and that 2kg is about normal.
I don't feel sick at all, just a bit tired. And am slightly paranoid about putting on tooo much weight as you may have guessed.
Should I be indulging these cravings?

Congrats
When I first found out I was pg, fresh bread was the only thing that settled my tummy (preferably with Vegemite on it). Now, it's crumpets and fresh fruit. So far I've put on 4.5kg, but in saying that a) I'm having twins and b) if it means two healthy bubbas that's ok. The bread thing didn't last for long for me, maybe a week or two max??
As for should you be indulging....it's up to you. Personally, I decided I'd rather eat what the heck I felt like and stop myself feeling sick instead of worrying about my weight and what I was eating.

Yes.
- I'm assuming you are quiet fit, and for the time being there is nothing wrong with carrying on whatever exercise you are doing with caution. I worked as a Personal Trainer until 34wks, and I ate whatever meant I could to get through a day without lacking energy or being sick :)

With my first pg I craved carbs like no bodies business!
I put it down to the fact that I was a bodybuilder for years and so my diet was always low carb .. so thats what my body required me to eat at the time to nourish the bub.
I always eat what I crave as I feel that its your bodies way of telling you what it needs

Thanks for the replies.
I don't feel sick though! So no real reason for it I don't think.
I have traditionally followed a reasonably low- carb diet, so maybe thats what it is- I just didn't think that signs were so obvious this early on.
I am still exercising, I really enjoy it and apparently there are benefits to keeping up exercise so will do it as long as possible.

Congratulations Lady Lizard.
During both my pregnancies I've craved carbs big time. Like you I normally follow a low-carb diet but like lilfatty if my body thinks I need it then I'll have it.
I think that it's bollocks about not needing more calories early on, I've been told the same thing but my body obviously thought it did and just as well really since this time around I spent a couple of months feeling constantly nauseous and totally off my food and vomitting everything including water, lucky I'd spent the early weeks building up my energy stores.

hehe this one craves all bad stuff - chips, takeaways and crumpets (tho they do say 99% fat free )
but i do eat lots of fruit to try and balance that out but i reakon in the first trimester there really sint much you actully WANT to eat so eat what you crave.

Thank you, thank you!
Maybe then I won't be such a PIG.
I can't stop thinking about bread. I have even started MAKING it- I have baked more bread, cake and biscuits in the last two weeks than I ever have in my life!

Seriously - enjoy it while it lasts. As you get further along, there'll be less and less food you feel like. DF asks me daily what's for tea, or what I want. I just say I don't know, because to be honest, I don't. I have no idea. So if I feel like something, I'm just going to eat it - it's better than the nothing I would usually eat!! At the moment my favourite thing is plums, the contrast of sweet and sour. Just thinking about them makes me salivate. And I'm not that far in front of you!!!

I felt alot sicker this time, but I carried on with my exercise until 30 weeks (i did body combat and I so miss it now!!!!) Regular exercise made me feel like I had more energy and I haven't put on as much weight this time. Just dont over-do it, if you feel tired then stop.
I'm a carb junkie anyway, lol, so didn't make much difference to me. I'd just go with it, you'll probably settle down once you get to 12 weeks, then once you have a big belly eating can be a struggle as you feel so full sometimes!
Congrats and good luck with your pregnancy.

Who cares who "should be" or "shouldn't be"? If you're hungry, eat!! And if it's bread instead of chippies - all the better!

I think its because I am not much of a bread eater normally.
Thanks again for all your suggestions and tips.

Congratulations! I never had very strong cravings with my pregnancies, more like anti-cravings! I think cravings are your body's way of telling you want you need so eat up! Unless you start craving werid things, I read somewhere that some women crave things like dirt!

I found I was eating heaps of bread, but hated the smell of meat cooking, fried food, but loved fruit, cheese, potatoes, also went off veges....
buuuuuut what I loved eating one week, changed the next week... and that was when I had bad nausea.
I'm still on and off with nausea but i thought the worst of it was round 8-14 weeks

Maybe you could make me some bread? I'm not very good at it.
From what I remember the only thing I really ate was carbs, and somehow I dropped 5kg and still have not gained it back. I felt like all I was doing was eating for a while, but I think you just notice it more as you are worried about gaining weight (well I am anyways).
