Topic: Losing a Twin! Posted: 06 March 2009 at 4:19pm |
Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this?
My story is like this:
Sunday - signs and symptoms of MC - MW did a visit and agreed as appeared I had a small cervical shock when clots passed.
Monday - bleeding stopped.
Tuesday - feeling ok but still have a yucky feeling now and again.
Wednesday - back to work and talk to MW about trying again etc. Casually ask when MS will stop. Surprised she sends me for bloods to see if my HCG is declining too slowly.
Thursday - bloods come back at right level for dates so scan organised as MW thinks blighted ovum.
Friday/Today - scan shows 1 healthy 8 week baby. Masses of blood still sitting in bottom of uterus so will be more bleeding but bubs is attached up the top so should be fine. report confirms loss of a twin.
My questions:
Has anyone else experienced this?
How did you feel and did it hit you later on?
Do you think your child knew they were a twin?
Were you closely monitored?
Did the other wee one survive?
Did you carry to term?
Any help and advise would be great!
I am ok about losing a twin but not sure what to expect from here.
Thanks!!!

My mum lost my youngest sister's twin quite early into her pregnancy. Like you she didn't know it was twins until she lost one.
Talking to her about it recently she said she felt kinda numb about it at the time and it didn't really hit her until my sister was born (at about 39 weeks by elective c section - only cos Mum's first 3 kids were all c section). It didn't cause any problems with bonding but it brought home what she had lost - although she still feels guilty to this day that she felt a bit relieved not to be having to deal with twins (especially with 3 older kids in her case).
Mum is largely philosophical about it though. One of Jen's best friends since kindy is a twin, but *her* twin is severely disabled and Mum thinks if Jen's twin had survived that may have been what we would have ended up dealing with.
She was quite closely monitored, I remember her having lots of scans.
Not sure if Jen "knew" anything but she was the only one of us kids that had an imaginary friend as a toddler, even before she could talk she always seemed to be playing with someone who wasn't there. She was told when she was still reasonably young and is fine with it, it's more a curiosity to her than anything iygwim.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and the scan, and sorry for your loss It must be a crazy mixed up kind of feeling.
I'm sure Mum would be happy to chat about it so if you want her email address PM me

Thats great you still have a bubs in there!
I dont reckon they would know they had a twin, at that stage it would have just been cells that you lost if that makes sense. They think Kobe might have been a twin because I had a second thing attached to my placenta which they said is likely to be a twin that didnt go past a few weeks.
Im guessing the rest of your pregnancy will go along as normal. Good luck

Congrats on the pg, although it hasn't worked out quite as expected so far. I haven't had what you are talking about but my mum did with one of my siblings. He was induced at nearly term, due to her having high BP (unrelated to the twin) - so I would count that as "carrying to term". She still thinks of the twin from time to time (otherwise I wouldn't know about it!) but I think it's really just curiosity not grief every time she sees my brother IYGWIM.

Hi Peanut - I hope you are ok. This hasn't happened to me but I friend has had a twin MC and they've just had a perfect little girl.
I'm sure they will have to keep a close eye on you and bubs, and if it was me, the bleeding you're expecting to come out soon would do my head in.
Hugs!!! and remember there is always people online if you need to talk.

Hasnt happened to me, but a good friend of mine had that happen. She had the sack inside for quite some time as well.
Other twin was born a few months ago and is just perfect.

Hi Peanut, what a rollercoaster for you.
It hasn't happened to me either, but one of my friends had lost a twin in the early weeks of pregnancy and then had a normal rest of preg, carried full term and had a perfect baby girl. She's absolutely healthy and fine.

Thanks so much for your info about it!
I really appreciate it all. I know its fairly common but was just a wee bit worried it would hit me quite hard later as feel fine about it now.
Really love the support you get on here!!

Hey Peanut, so happy to see you have a sticky bean in there.. but very sorry to hear one didnt make it. I can only say what a bitter sweet scan that must have been.
My DH is a surviving twin... They didnt have scans back then and as MIL had had a C section with her first it was routine for all subsequents to be C section also. Lucky for her and DH that this was the case as the twin was eptopic and a natural birth could have killed them both.... She lights a candle on their birthday for her angel and puts it next a red rose.
She does say that she has always felt that the twin has been there looking out for DH and that in some way DH knew that as a child. Apparently he was an oddly calm child, like he knew everything would always be ok.
Hugs
