Hi there,
This might not be the right place to ask so sorry if it is out of place.....

DH and I would love to start trying for a baby in the next year or so but i'm currently on depo and have been for the last 5ish years.
My idea is to switch to a pill now rather than later... but never having had the pill before, are there ones that you would recommend over others?
Thanks...

NOw I'm not an expert but from what I have read here on OhBaby, depo takes up to 12 months for your cycles to resume normally, the pill also takes time to get back into a normal cycle. But in saying that some people get back to normal straight away.

So I would say your best bet would be to stop both and use condoms etc.

But if you want the increased security of using the pill. I was on yasmin (combined pill) which was better for me than other pill's (less symptoms etc), otherwise try the mini-pill.

Hope that helps, but if in doubt maybe talk to your GP.

It took me 4 months after depo to start ovulating and have a normal cycle, i came off it in november last year and we're ttc now.
I would recommend coming off the depo and seeing a naturopath to get your body back to normal if you're in any hurry.

I would suggest just using condoms because more often than not it takes alot longer than assumed for things to get back to normal after depo.
I had 3 lots of depo after my first boy then we decided we would TTC#2 after we got married (eatly feb 06) so i went off the depo roughly 5ish months before.....i got pregnant on the second cycle that AF returned which was october 06.

I agree with the others - I only took one shot of depo and once that ran out took 4 months to get pregnant - didnt really get AF in between and had lots of spotting for the 4 months.

I am so against depo now, i know it may work for some women but i dont think doctors should be sayings its a good contraception for people that are wanting babies within 1-2years of coming off it. It isnt a quick fix and sometimes have much longer side effects on fertility than thought!

Totally agree with what Hannahbil said!. My MW said that they know a bit more about it nowdays so her and the docs she knows are trying to lead people away from using it.

If you want to go on a pill, I would go for a mini-pill, as at least you still ovulate on a mini-pill (unlike combined) so in theory your cycle should return to normal faster. We got pg first month of trying (had been off mini pill for a few months). Hope that helps.

I was on the pill for 11 years and my first took 18 months to make (with a 6 month ttc break in between whilst i changed jobs) I dunno if that was to do with the pill or more just because we ditched contraception but didn't actively TTC as such.

Have you thought about having an IUD fitted? It's relatively painless to have fitted (completely painless once fitted) and then you are good to go as soon as it is removed. There are two types, one is a hormone one but family planning or your gp would be able to talk over the options for you.

Hey Melly,

Im also one that has experienced TTC after 4years on depo. It took me about 2months after the last one wore off to get AF, then about 6months after that to get a regular cycle. Im still not preg and have been TTC for 15months now after last depo shot wore off.....I did get preg last month but it wasnt sticky so i know now i can get preg........so if your thinking about in a year, then i would say get off it NOW, so you dont suffer the same heart ache of not having any control over your fertility returning after depo.

Good luck with what you decide

I don't know the answer to your question but I have heard of a lot of people who took 1-2 yrs for their cycles to return after going off Depo. So my initial advice would be to get off it now - but don't know the second half of what you should actually do lol.

Originally depo was only for women who had had children since the effect on your fertility is huge. Now they're looser here but in lots of places overseas its still only for people with families. I'd say get off the depo asap and just go as natural as possible.
