My friend's baby had a hip scan because she was breach. I think she said it was just like a pregnancy scan really, they put that gel on the baby's hips and scanned them. It was a while ago, but I'm pretty sure that's how it went :)
Spencer had one cos of being breech. It's very painless and only takes about 10 mins. They lay them on the bed (same as when you have an ultrasound) and I was able to still hold onto his fingers etc so was right next to him. Took his bottoms off and then the scanner guy just unhooked one side of the nappy to scan then swapped over. There was one bit on each leg where he got a little upset because they have to hold them very still. He wasn't in pain it was just a protest at being held still as he stopped the second that he let go of his leg and he could move it again.
They tell you straight away how it is looking as well.
Sam had a few hip scans for being breech, it's really quick and painless. Although the lady in the waiting room told me to take his bottoms off, including nappy and sit and wait for our turn to go in. I thought that was a silly idea so I waited until we were in there and quickly took them off.
I had to hold him still, but I wouldn't have been allowed to do that had I been pregnant at the time I think.
Reuben had a hip x-ray as his leg creases are uneven too - the x-ray provided no answer on why that is, but did show that his hips are fine. It was very quick and easy - took longer to get the lead apron on me than it did to get a couple of decent shots of the baby. I imagine a scan wouldn't be an uncomfortable experience for your baby - maybe she'll be annoyed at being held still, but nothing painful or uncomfortable about it. Good luck!
