Topic: Bed time Posted: 25 July 2009 at 7:03pm |
Hi just curious about bedtimes ...
Our bubs is just over 9 months and goes to bed between 8-8.30pm is this too late???
Her routine is
7.30am breakfast - normally just a bottle
Morning sleep
11.30am - bottle
12.30pm - yoghurt/biscuit
3.30pm - bottle
5.30ish dinner
Playtime and bath
7.30pm bottle
8-8.30 bed
Her afternoon nap changes slightly during week she sleeps before her 3.30pm bottle and at weekends she has a sleep about 4.30pm.
She is in fulltime care during the week. I'm not sure how we can really change her routine to get her off to bed earlier.
She is still waking during the nights sometimes she resettles quickly and others it takes over an hour to resettle - refuses to take a bottle at all - sometimes she may only be in bed for a short period. She she eating enough?
What does everyone else do ...

Hi both my kids are in bed by 6.30-7pm, they are just over it by then and ready to go down for the night. I like my evenings as well.
I try to give dinner at 4.30-5, then into the bath around 5.30 then getting into pjs by 6.15-6.30pm. When Spencer use to have milk he would have that around 6ish and with Kyle I try to feed him as close to 7 as possible, depends how his afternoon nap has gone.
She doesn't seem to be eating that much, no breakfast and only a biscuit/yoghurt at lunch. You could try swapping to food before bottle as that is recommended at 8-9 months. I always kept milk first at brekkie though as Spencer always woke thirsty and i would just wait 30 mins before offering breakfast unless he asked for it sooner.
From what I remember this was Spencer's rough routine.
7am bottle
7.30am breakfast
8.30am bed
10am bottle
12pm lunch
1pm bottle
1.30pm bed
3.30-4pm bottle
4.30-5pm dinner
5.30pm Bath
6pm bottle
7pm bed
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. At breakfast she will rarely take solids I have tried waiting for at least half an hour after her bottle - she may take a bit of toast. On average she is having 600mls a day, a pottle of yoghurt, at dinner she will either have pumpkin or kumara with peas and chicken/fish or meatballs she will often have a jar of watties banana cereal or another yoghurt. At her last Plunket check she was all on track.

I swapped my wee girl who is also just over 9 months to food first about a month ago. Now this is roughly how her day goes.
7.30 breakfast
morning tea - milk
11 snack before bed
1.30ish lunch
afternoon tea - milk
5.30 dinner
6.30 milk then bed
So food and milk is quite separate. She has no more than 600ml milk a day. Maybe if you gave breakfast first she may eat more.

Daniels evening routine has been for months and months (probably since about 6 months old) ..
Dinner 5ish
620-630 start bath
6:50 bottle
7pm bed
On the odd ocassion he stays up a little later now. Didn't matter when his afternoon nap was when he had one that was always how the evening went. If he woke up close to 5 I'd push the routine out by half an hour max

She really doesnt eat much!!
Leahs routine is:
6.30-7am bottle
7.15-7.30am bed
8.30-9.30 up breakfast baby cereal and toast
11am bottle then nap
1pm lunch sandwich, fruit and cheese
3pm bottle smal nap
3.45-4pm snack fruit or biscuit
4.30-5pm Dinner veges/ meat or both
5.30pm bath
5.50pm bottle
6-6.15pm bed.
And if she doesnt eat much during the day she wil wake during the night.

both my two are in bed by 7! I think that 8-8.30 is a bit late. As someone else said, sleep begets sleep.
When Amy was about that age she was very ambivalent about her breakfast after her bottle so I switched them over (a bit earlier than recommended) and I found that she ate a good breakfast and still drank nearly all of the 200ml bottle.
As for changing her bedtime, it will take a week or two but bring it forward by 10 minutes each night. It is a similar theory that people use at the start/end of daylight savings.

Both my two are in bed by 6.30pm and usually up at 7.30am. We have had the same routine for months now.
07.30 bottle/breakfast
11.30 lunch
12.30 nap
1430 up
1630 dinner
1700 bath
1800 bottle, change, story, teeth brushed
1830 bed
Maybe change dinner time to 4.30?

We've had the same bedtime routine for about 9 months now.
5:30: Dinner
6:15: Bath.
6:50: Bottle
7pm: Bed
She's just dropped down to one sleep a day in the last month or two.
But her days have always started at 7 (she wakes at about 6:30, but is grumpy if I get her up before 7)

Do you think she is tired/ready for bed before 8pm? Callum has tea around 5.30 and then play time till his bath (between 6.15/6.30 depending) and then a story, bottle and bed by 7pm. Often I go into our room and it's just before 7 so it is possible to fit in tea etc and get them off to bed earlier, although I admit it's pretty full on between 5.30 and 7 in our house during the week!
If the 8pm bedtime is working for you though then I would stick with it. C has always gone down by 7 coz we've always had him up at 7am in the mornings and it just works out that way. My DH is never home before 8 so he would much prefer a later bedtime but I don't want to change anything now C is in such a good routine

Hey, my DD is 8 months and her routine is:
7am ~ wake & BF, then she likes to play for a bit
8am ~ breakfast (fruit & porridge, then toast) and watch baby einstein, get dressed
9am ~ nap 30-45min
10am latest ~ wake and go out
11:45am ~ lunch (meal with protein, marmite sammies, mandarin)
12:20pm ~ nap 2hours
2:20pm ~ wake and BF, play or whatever
4pm ~ nap 30min
5pm ~ dinner (vege meal, fingerfoods)
6pm ~ bath & dress
6:30pm ~ BF
7pm ~ bed
We follow the Contented Little Baby routine, which recommends that baby eats heaps in the day to be able to sleep through all night.
Hope you find your solution soon! Good luck :)

Thanks for your replies. We are working on having her off to bed around 7.30pm now. We keep working with her eating too - she is very stubborn and once shes had enough that's it. Two hours into her sleep shes awake crying wish we could get her settled for a good nights sleep!

We also follow the Contented Little Baby routine, Arianne will only wake at night if she hears noises and then needs to find her dummy but can't.
She hasn't had any during the night feeds since 5 months old.
7am - wake, bottle and cereal
9am - nap
9.45am - wake
11.30am - bottle and fruits
12.30pm sleep 2 hours
2.30pm - bottle
4pm - snack
4.30pm 1/2 hour nap
5.30pm - bath
6pm - bottle, meat and vege
7pm - bed
7pm bed seems to be the normal, does you baby get a bit restless before 8pm?

Thats what we used to do. We kept pulling forward bedtime by half an hour each week until bedtime got to 6.30. I think most people make bedtime around 7pm we make it 6.30 simply because we are usua;;y well and truely over it by then lol

Hi she is actually very contented overall. I was talking with her daycare and we are swapping to food first and dropping a bottle feed. The main carer is actually involved with Plunket and she said she is getting enough to eat. It shall be interesting!

my girl is a bit older 20 months
typcial day goes something like this
7:30-8am wake up get dressed breakfast
10ish some morning tea sometimes we will be out in the morning for something
11:30-12ish lunch
12-12:30pm down for a sleep (I leave her in her cot till about 2pm unless she is screaming which isnt that often)
3pm I will give her some afternoon tea.
5:30pm dinner
6pm shower
6:30pm brush teeth and into bed with a story.
we have always kept a reasonable firm but also flexible bedtime routine I just kept moving the time forward when she was younger her bedtime was 9pm and over a few weeks slowly went forward to 6:30pm. but it has always been the same...ie dinner bath/shower (breastfeed when I was) story then bed.

Josh has always been a late to bed boy earliest has probably been 8pm but usually is 8.30-9 and takes around 30 min to get him to sleep and he sleeps right through (when not teething) till anywhere between 7am and 8.30 so ive never bothered switching it up it would be nice for him to be in bed earlier to have that time to ourselves but its more flexible for us with him going to bed later if we want to visit people
