Topic: Am I just being chicken?? Posted: 05 August 2009 at 2:52pm |
So DH is going away this weekend (ok its really just one night) and I will be left at home on my own with the girls. I dont want to do it! The thought of spending the night on my own is freaking me out.
Its not that he has never been away before, it is just this if the first time since we have been in our new home. Before then we were living out the bak of my parents so there was always someone not too far away.
We have only been in this house a few weeks and there seem to be so many strange noises (that I'm sure in time I will get used to) and we have a sensor light that goes on and off all night. Also we have windows I have to walk past to get to the girls room that don't have curtains and they scare me enough when DH is home. And the girls are in another room!....
I want to go stay home with my parents but am I just being silly. DH wants me home to protect the house, and thinks I need to face my fears and get over them.
What would you do?? How do I not freak myself out about it? Am I really just beinga wuss?

Hi Daizy :)
Definitely not being a chicken! I was the same for the first year in our new house. I would leave all the lights on all night, some nights i would also put music on quietly in our room!!
But you will be ok, even though it is hard, you will get used to it, and one day look back on this and laugh your butt off about it!!
Otherwise there is always the option of spending all night on OB!!!
Big hugs in the meantime!!!

I used to be the same! Unfortunately you just have to get used to it. You'll be absolutely fine

Totally understand how you are feeling. I am a wimp at staying at home with out DH.
Would one of your parents be able to come out and stay the night with you? As you say you are just getting used the house, and next time will probably heaps more comfortable with the noises and lights.

I'm still a wimp and I live all by myself with Sam!
I have to go around checking every window and lock and curtain to make sure they are all shut each night. Sucks because I can see marks on my front and back doors where people have obviously tried to break in when previous tenants have lived here.
Can you sleep in bed with one of the girls? Some nights when I feel a bit anxious or lonely I just get into Sams bed with him, although now that he has a really narrow race car bed and I am pregnant, it's too hard!

You are definately not chicken!
When DH used to leave for night shift I used to spend at least two hours jumping at every noise while trying to get to sleep. I dont know why but at our old place I was much worse than I am here.
I sleep with a hammer under the bed and bring Janaya in with me so im not so lonely... its taken me about 3 years of constant night shifts to get used to it, you'll get there!

Yeah I am tempted to sleep in Keiras bed. She can sleep on a Matress on the floor
It would be a whole lot easier after living here a while and once we get curtains on the windows fitted.
I am sure I will be fine, I think I will just go to bed early and sleep!
Unless its stormy....

Last night was shocking. Our sensor light kept going off and then a magnet fell off the fridge and smashed. I honestly thought we were being broken into.
DH really wasnt much help,he just rolled over and grumbled at me for waking him. I dont even know why I need him around

I used to live in a 2 bedroom flat down a long driveway ,next to a family that couldn't speak english, and I never got any sleep, and one night I was just drifting off to sleep when there was a tap at my window , my gosh I nearly had a heart attack , that feeling of when your heart is in your knees , turned out to be a guy I was seeing ,but still! took a few years off my life !
So ,my answer is , no , you are not being a chicken , and I for one , would completly understand if you stayed at your parents for the night .

oh i know how oyu feel Daisy! DH laughs at me cos one of the biggest things i am scared of is the dark and that there will be some baddie waiting out there to get me lol. We have lived in our house for 5 years and i still can't look out the window in the middle of the night in case someone is there
DH is away often hunting so i go stay at my parents for the night, but in a couple of weeks he will be away for a whole week so i will need to stay in the house by myself for security but also to feed the chooks - Im getting better at doing this but still get freaked out, i use to go to sleep with the light still on lol.

I know how you feel! My DH is going away in a couple of weeks for the whole weekend and it will be the first time I'll be alone with baby (which is scary enough!). It's such an irrational fear but I had someone break into my house years ago while I was in there so I hate being alone now. I never hear any noises in the house when DH is home but when he's away I hear everything!!
I find it helps to go round and check all the doors and windows while it's still light so I'm confident that everything is locked up. And have a phone near you in bed so that if you do get freaked out you can call someone - maybe just let them know that they're your 'go to' person in case you call in the middle of the night!!
I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine but I find those things help me when I'm home alone!!

Ok you're being chicken. But I would be too!!!
Imagine how awesome you'll feel for surviving at your place :)
It'll suck, I don't envy you, but the telethon idea is a brilliant one!

Wow! this thread makes me feel normal! I'm a chicken also, but I would prefer a stormy night if I was by myself because the bad people don't come out in the rain.
I either sleep in James room, or stay up all night and fall asleep with the light on.
Telethon sounds good

I'm a chicken too - I used to set the house alarm go to bed decide I still wasn't feeling safe - get up and push the bed against the bedroom door .... I'm a big sad case I know. Do what you feel comfortable with - go and stay with your parents or invite a friend over.

I have had to do this so often that I don't let it bother me anymore but it is hard when you hear noises in the night. We live in the bush with no neighbours that close by, so kind of makes it worse.
In regards to the windows with no curtains I would stick sheets over them just pin them where you wont be able to see the pin holes when you take them down, I know it would make me feel a lot better if the windows were all covered.
Oh and I would not worry about being a chicken everyone is scared of something!

I agree with Bizzy! Camp out in the lounge with the kiddies - a treat for them and "comfort" for you.
Edited to explain - I mean I agreed with BIzzy to camp out and watch TV all night...not that you are a chicken
