Am trying to have a good week eating wise - ie not so much chocolate!!!!
Has anyone got any great ideas for things to eat in between meals that are filling and nutritious to help inspire me!
Also, does anyone know if there is a direct link between babies size and how much food the mother eats while pregnant, or is it more genetic?

My Mum got me a subscription to NZ Healthy Food Guide magazine for Chritsmas. The August issue has good snack ideas and yummy quick meal recipes too!

from what i have read, the food you eat BEFORE you concieve is more important than the food you eat DURING pregnancy - because if you are dieting before, you are concieving your child to think that it will be coming into a world of no food - so its metabolism will be slower, and will be more prone to adult obesity and diabetes. Scary huh!
As long as you eat reasonably healthy, to allow baby to get all the nutrients it needs to grow, without draining you of all your stores, i think you can relax about the choc. it is only an issue to watch what you eat if you want to lose weight after baby is born.

on the chocolate note, it is a vegetable ( and we are supposed to eat our veges) and research has found that if a woman eats choc in pregnancy, her baby will be more laid back when born! how bout that!!!!
i read that in a magazine, and ripped it out and took it home to show dh as i knew he wouldnt believe me otherwise :)

I like your thinking Xanthe's mum - and even better that it is backed up with research!
I think that means I can bring back the twix pods!

I had to watch what I was eating with gestational diabetes (or should I say basically stop eating it felt like)
try cutting up some carrot sticks, enough for the day and leave them in your fridge, also if you think they are boring then have some hummus or low fat dip handy.
Crackers are always good, dried apricots or peaches (high is sugar though so in moderation) you can get little snack packets of peanuts or raisins and peanuts, a box of 8 for about $3 from the supermarket. Cut up watermelon or pineapple. Le snaks, little bags of popcorn. Hmm cant think of anything else at the moment though. I found the key is to have things prepared in the morning so I could just grab something quickly.

Hi Katie,
In between meals I generally eat a lot of fruit (around 5 servings per day). I also have a museli bar every day and sometimes nuts etc - having said that I do have a little bit of chocolate from time to time

hmmm I cheat a little by having the chocolate covered muesli bars - taht way I feel like I have had chocolate but its not too much sugar (except ofcourse when you eat a whole box of six in one day as I did a few weeks ago - oh the shame!!! ..but they were soooo goooodddd...)

I have eaten lots of bad stuff in the last few days and am trying to get back into the healthy eating now... I am the junk food queen so I am trying to be sensible!

A question about peanuts though, I have always believed they are healthy, I think all nuts are healthy (esp the choc covered almonds nuts thats another story LOL!) ANYWAY the lady who takes our ante natal said under no circumstances should we be eating peanuts when we are pg cos they will give the baby allergies... I usually eat loads of nuts and peanut butter most mornings on toast etc so I was a bit upset when I found that out (only about a week ago!) and hubby was worried too... when we went home we talked about it and decided that since neither of us had heard that they were dangerous before they couldnt be that bad, but even so I notice hubby watchin what I put on my toast the past week or so and I cant bring myself to have my favourite peanut butter just in case...
SOOOOO my point is (I am really rambling today, baby brain) ARE PEANUTS REALLY THAT DANGEROUS!?!?!? The way the midwife at ante natal talked about them you would think they were worse than cold precooked roast chickens from foodtown topped with 3 day old shellfish on a buffet table!!!!

Hi Frantic,
The first midwife I saw in this pregnancy told me that you should cut nuts out of your diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding if there is any history of food allergies in your families.
She said that for most people nuts are fine and just not to be eating them in excess (i.e. sudden craving, demolish a whole bag in one sitting mode!) rather, just as an occasional thing.
It sounds sensible to me so I'm happy to follow her advice. HTH

Yeah I have heard the same thing, that u should avoid peanuts during pregnancy and brastfeeding if u have a family history of asthma or allergies.
As my Mum was told to eat lots of peanuts ( cant remember the reason) when she was pregnant with me,..and I have had allergies and asthma my whole life, I am avoiding anything with peanuts ( boo hoo I miss peanut M&M's!!). Dunno about other nuts, its only peanuts that I have heard linked to allergies, but I only have the occasional other type of nut anyway! And who knows if Mum eating peanuts during pregnancy has anything to do with my getting allergies/asthma? Im not allergic to peanuts, or any other food.
Im sure if u dont have a known problem,..then like most other things,..moderation is probably sensible!

I was never told to avoid nuts but did read it somewhere if you have a history of allergies. I ate nuts and peanut butter all through my pregnancies with no problems.

I found that muesli bars, fresh fruit, and those little pots of yoghurt were good during pregnancy and still have them quite often. I know it's hard though, I have to put a lot more thought into remembering to eat now, or at least making sure I'm having something nutritious !

Fruit, yoghurt, cheese and crackers...all winners with me. Oh and crumpets as well (not heavy on the butter otherwise it ruins the whole 99% fat free thing!)

I've also heard that peanuts are meant to be avoided if there is that family history of asthma and/or allergies (oops! ) that said I've eaten them.

Our ante-natal instructor told us that we should have NO nuts at all!!!!

Rice crackers are yummy. But Im naughty and go for something a bit more yummy, hehe. Those Rice Wheels are yummmm!!!!!

those bumper bars are sooooo bad for you, major high in fat and lots of weight watchers points, you might as well have a crunchie bar or something. I was gutted cos I used to buy them in bulk until I started weight watchers.
Have you seen those mainland cheese and cracker packs, they are yummy and I love the mini breadsticks with vege hummus one.

Hi all, I've had to watch my sugar intake this time around as I don't feel extra hungry but I'm a lightweight... so I fill up on the sugar stuff and then crash after it wears off! So my morning and afternoon teas have actually been things like potato salad or macaroni cheese cause I have been instructed to pile up the carbs!

I have definitely found though that if the food is not already prepared for when I need it, I don't stick with it, so that's a big thing...

And for snacks I enjoy carrot sticks with dip or cheese and pineapple - a lot of people haven't heard of that: you just chop the cheese the same size as the pineapple and put them together with toothpicks.... OR just grab a fork

Mmmm, pineapple.  There's a good idea!  I used to snack on processed cheese squares - kinda craved them for a while.  Not really nutricious, I know, but there's still some calcium and protien in there somewhere!  Dried fruits are good too, in moderation.  I always take out the amount I plan to eat in that sitting and put in on a plate or something, rather than just nibbling from the bag whenever, as that way I know how much I've had (and it's so easy to accidentally eat 3 times as much otherwise - like when I eat chippies!) - anyone who'se ever overdone it on the dried apricots will know exactly what that's soooo regrettable!

And on the peanuts thing?  I hadn't touched peanut butter for years - didn't like it - but now sometimes I just crave crunchy peanut butter on toast, and crunchy peanut butter on toast I'll have.

Andie
