Topic: I feel kinda silly... Posted: 07 September 2006 at 9:08pm |
but i've never had a smear, now my gp is chasing me up on it saying i should really get it done. i know i should but i'm just a bit nervous which i know is silly after having had a baby, but i'm just still really self-conscious.
is it really essential?

Mmmm well I don't know if it absolutely essential, but I'm one of those people who thinks it is quite important. A couple of my friends have had abnormal smears lately at such a young age. And while it might be nothing, there is also the possibility it is something, and if they catch it early there is a much better chance of fixing things!
It isn't exactly pleasant, but if you get a doc you are comfortable with then it is so much easier... and it is over pretty damn quick - then you don't have to worry about it for another couple of years!

I think they are very essiential. I have had problems with my cerix and the only way it was picked up was from the smear. They don't hurt and are a tad uncomfortable but they are the only way to see whats happening with your cervix. Book the appointment now.

My first ever smear test at 18 ended in surgery, this nearly scared me off having them for life! But everytime I have one (I have to have them yearly) I remember that I'm doing it for my baby and future babies. My last one I did while lying on my side (I hate looking people in the face while they look in your moot!) and it look 1 minute for her to get her crap ready, do it, then move out of the way. Be brave!

Go get one - for the 10 minutes it can take - it puts you rmind at rest or can save your life by detecting it early. Its more uncomfortable that hurt but I do have a friend whom it hurts alot - something to do with her cervix being 'different'. (but note she still gets it done)

I'm one who had one done which was abnormal. You really need to get them done. They aren't very scary all it is is a big cotton bud lol. Must be a walk in the park compared with giving birth haha

I hate getting them done and always put it off but then this is how my sisters cancer was picked up early both times! So now because of a family history including my mum and nana its recommended that i get them done more often than normal and as much as i dont like it I know its soooo important. Dont overthink it and just make an appt and get it done

Yep, they aren't exactly a barrel off laughs, but probably nowhere near as bad as you are imagining.
The last couple of times, I've actually had mine done by a nurse at the doctor's office. She was just so encouraging and matter-of-fact about it - made me feel relatively relaxed about it all!

I have to have them done due to my mum getting cervical cancer when she was 27 and having a full hysterectomy at 28 thankfully she had her kids already!

I put them off for as many years as I could, but seriously, there's nowhere near as bad as you'd imagine! Once it's done, you realise it's no biggie anyway, but can be really good peace of mind.

I hate them too, but I really must go do one, but it is one of those thing's that make you feel very uncomfortable.

I hate them too but then the alternative isn't very appealing either!
You'll be fine...good luck!

My Mum also had cervical cancer and had a full hysterectomy at 35 so I'm another one who is very pro smear testing. For Mum if she hadn't had regular smears it might not have been picked up until too late.
My GP finds it amusing that I 'know' when my smears are due and book them even before I get the reminder letters...

i'm shaking my finger at you - saying get it done.
i had an abnormal smear and had to have treatment for it - imagine if i had never had a smear at all - i could be dead now. or worse my children would spend the majority of their lives without a mum.

Get it done...it only takes few min. Just remember if all is normal you wont have to have them again for 3 years (or two...hmmm).
