i got there in time to push, put as i've said, i had to push for 2 hours. definately know to ring my midwife a bit earlier this time. although, i liked being at home, it calmed me down for the first while, it's only when i felt like things were happening and my midwife had said she wouldn't be there for another half hour that i got a bit worried.

i can definately see why people like home births, if your pregnancy has been all good and baby is looking to be in a good position and all that then it would probably be awesome to be able to cuddle up in your own bed instead of those uncomfy hospital thingies, but i think for the main event i like to feel that everything is right there if anything goes wrong, so hospital it is for me, maybe i might get to use the spa bath this time, i mean, since only 10% of people's water's break first, the odds are pretty good that it won't happen to me again. (is that good or bad?).

i was thinking the same...
when im giving birth i need to be able to be at a place where their fully ready, i was thinking to do it at a birthing center because there sooooo much better looking then hospitals and there baths are like hudge spas!! and nice big rooms with sofas and all, but they dont have epidural there and i deninfitly know that i dont want one.....
But what if i do when the time comes i mean when your in labour and nothings really happening im sure you just want it out of there. so it puts my mind at ease to know that im in a place where everything is there if i need it....

so i guess its the yukky hospital for me...... just in case anything gos upside down

lol. just try and stay home as long as you can, and check in with your midwife regularly.. she'll probably come and check you a few times in the early stages to see how you are doing.

home definately calms you down.. then you can go to hospital to have it and you'll still feel safe. i just remember that as soon as i got into that hospital i felt like my whole body tensed up, and i felt nervous.. here was this unfamiliar place, with everything painted white, and a clock on the wall in front of you reminding you how long you'd been there everytime you looked at it. for a place that is supposed to help you feel good giving birth, it certainly isn't very cosy and nice!

how much onger do you have to go? it can't be very long at all now?

oh yeah, hey, have you considered the birthing cetre anyway? i mean, usually if anything is starting to look like its heading down a bad path.. they will transfer you to the hospital. if it makes you feel better then go with it.

i was induced so was in hospital from word go - i wish that i had had the opportunity to wake my hubby in the middle of the night and experience it all naturally - i had planned to stay at home as long as possible. But thats the way it goes i spose, baby was healthy and all went well in the end and thats what matters.

I went to hospital after being at home about 24 hours. I wish i had gone to hospital sooner as their spa bath was heaven on my back.

I went to hospital after 31 hours. Contractions started at 4pm on Wed and I went at 11pm on Thursday. Even then I lied to my midwife - she said no hospital till the contractions were 5mins apart, and at this stage they were still irrgular, but I rang her and said they were 5mins apart because I couldn't handle the pain anymore and I was scared and tired.
I was 5cm when I got to the hospital, but my labour still progressed really slowly so I had syntocinon to speed it up.
I'm glad I went to the hospital when I did. Up until a couple of hours before I went i was still walking around my house normally, I even went to the supermarket in my pyjamas lol. But I went to hospital when I felt I needed to.
I remember in antenatal classes they said that the midwife won't let labour go on more than 12 hours, but they got around that with me by saying that my labour hadn't started till my midwife broke my waters at 1am Friday. I remember being all excited on the Wed that I was going to have a baby in the next 12 hours, not even lol! But now I know for next time...

the birthing center my midwife works at.. its sooooo nice i mean comparing to the hospital anyway, i wish i could have my baby there but i dont think i would feel safe, i would want other doctors in the room aswell, not just my midwife i mean ofcourse shes done it a million times befor but hey... im just one of those who cant take pain very well and are sceard of everything!

i think your a real wonder women Emma... i mean any women being in labour for that long should be rewarded, and in a way they do, your so happy with maya. and i know no matter how long it takes me i'll get rewarded for that.

im due in november 18th so yeah not long to go.

Hey Neeno have you discussed your birth with your midwife? just wondering because you mentioned that you would want a doctor in the room. They don't usually get involved unless there is complications anyway. Its usually just your midwife and your support crew! Unless you have a home birth then there is two midwives for the final stage.

well Maria actually when i try to discuss the birth with my midwife she just says "we'll leave it to when we do the birth plan" so i havnt. thats why i wannted a hospital birth because doctors are everywhere in hospitals at least i know that im with safe hands there.

Hey what about the women who dont have midwifes... who gets involed then? maybe just the people at the hospital

Yep, they just usually have the hospital team of midwives. Or they may have been reffered to an obstitrician. There are very few GPs who deliver babys nowdays as they don't really have the time to leave their practices or to be called out in the middle of the night, its a shame really. My GP is awesome I would have loved it if she could deliver my children. But she does give me free checks all through my pregnancy as well as my midwife, which is nice.

My GP was great during my pregnancy too. I can relate to the low pain barrier Neeno - I am a full on sook! I was such a martyr in labour - ohhhh! I can't do this etc. The works! My midwife was like "it's a bit late now, just get on with it" lol!
But Maya is the best reward ever. I think too that I had a very difficult pregnancy, and a long labour, but the actual birth was very easy, I had no stitches and recovered very quickly afterwards, plus Maya was an easy, placid baby who settled well. So I think that was to make up for the horrible pregnancy and labour.

i think everyone gets to the point in labour where they think, nup, i'm not doing this.. i can't. for me it was the pushing part. i remember telling my midwife that i can't do it, lol and i got annoyed because she left during a contraction and all i had was mike.. who was nice, but not at all helpful. lol. maybe might try being more upright this time instead of lying down.. might be quicker too.

with the gp thing, i think in palmy there are only 2 gps who still do deliveries, other than you either have your specialist, your midwife or the hospital midwives.

The best advice I can give is drink Cider vinegar and honey! I discovered this just after I had my first son. I got a tear - quite a nasty one and it was really really painful to pee. I was given cider vinegar and honey to drink and I never looked back. Nothing I had tried until then worked, drinking the ural drink or even pouring warm water on myself while going to the toilet!
Also drinking it helped with not getting engorged when my milk came in. I am not sure what it is about Cider vinegar and honey but it works a treat(also good for colds).
I have since used it after my second son and this time after the twins and I have had no problems at all and I have had enough milk to feed an army!
Just one capful of cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey in a cup of hot water.

I had my doctor for all three of my births, I'm the same as neeno she delivered my first and I just felt better having a doctor there and for the others I figured why change, she was wonderful, did feel guilty calling her out at 11pm for my second. I'm glad I have finished having babies though as she is quitting maternity this year due to time retraints and wanting a life.( she runs a full practice as well) She is one of only 7 GPs that still deliver babies in CHCH.

Cider vinegar is also really good for heart burn & acid reflux, only problem is you are supposed to have 1 teaspoon neat.

Comvita make one that has honey in it and that tastes a bit nicer than plain version.
