    Posted: 04 October 2006 at 11:34am
I was induced at 9.00pm on Thursday night (10 days overdue) with what was supposed to be a "primer" to get me ready for the inducement proper to bring on full labour. I woke up at 2.30am with contractions but didn't buzz the midwife until 3.30am as I wasn't really sure it was the real thing!! Brendan was called back into the hospital at 4.00am and by 5.00am I was in the pool. I can tell you now it did sweet stuff all!! I really thought I was nearly screaming the place down at times though I've been assured I was actually not that noisey!! But 6.00am I was begging for pain relief as some of the contactions were virtually on top of each other which seemed pretty odd to me...I thought this all all meant to take longer.

6.30 I was taken out of the pool and really slowly got back to the birthing suite and not long afterwards starting sucking back the gas. That stuff really leaves you spaced!! I swear I don't remember half of what I was muttering! Apparently I was refusing an epidural but begging for the c-section!! (I think "Cut her out" where the exact words!).

Not long after that came the uncontrollable urge to start pushing...as I was showing external signs of being fully dialated the midwife said to go for it...that was getting no where and when Monique examined me at 8.00am I was only 8cm dialated. Still I had progressed VERY radidly in a short space of time so no wonder I was screaming! It was then found Maddie was prosterior so at 9.00am that's when I met my new best friend David the anethatist who gave me the epidural. Bliss....why would someone not want one!??

They wanted to get Maddie to turn and me fully dialated hence the epidural to stop the pushing. After another 6 and half hours I was checked by the surgeon and Monique and they established that not only had I not progressed but Maddie had got her ear stuck! The surgeon said it was an easy decision for a c-section.

Once in surgery the decision was even easier as it was discovered the walls of the uterus were paper thin and had a gone much longer I stood a good chance of rupturing.

Maddie then made her (loud) enterance into the world at 5.15pm.

I've been recovering pretty well though I still feel tender and I'm sure I have more aches and pains that when I was pregnant!!

Maddie is starting to settle into being home and I'm glad to be in my own space. The first few days were ok in hospital as I was lucky to either have the room to myself and when I did share it was actually with a friend of mine from OhBaby who gave birth 12 hours after me. However once a new room mate moved in I'd had enough and was lucky enough to be able to be discharged.

We have had to switch to bottle feeding as I've had extreme pain breastfeeding. Even with a shield everything cracked and the pain was so bad I was begging not to have to feed Maddie!! The midwife has been really supportive of our decision and I've been a lot calmer. B has also loves being able to feed his daughter! I'm expressing what I can for now and we're topping up with formula. Maddie has taken to it with ease which has been a relief and has also been a lot more settled as well though she is still a bit mixed up with night and day.

So that's about where we are at the moment. It's been an emotion filled journey so far and I'm sure there is alot more to come! We wouldn't change it for anything though!

Ahh Paws! Your birth story sounds very similar to mine, so I can totally relate and sympathise - down to the part about breastfeeding (although Amelia was the one who didn't wanna BF). Glad things are going really well now and (another) big Congrats to you and hubby.

Wow,. what a story Paws. Good on ya for the bottle feeding. And I'm glad you have a lot of support in that area, cause some people, as I've said before, look at you like you've said you want to sacrifice your first born. I bottle fed Taine early too and he was such a more contented happy baby, and it is nice for Dad to be able to (get up in the moddile of the night and ) feed bubba.

congrats on your wee girl. she is just gorgeous!

Well done roomie....and surprised to see that you didn't mention that first room-mate was bloody awful, snoring and laughed at B when he got pooed on .
Glad to hear that you are settling in at home and that all is going well. Enjoy Maddie - they only stay this little for a tiny, tiny time. (AND WELL DONE ON EVERYTHING - YOU DID AMAZINGLY BRILLIANTLY WELL!)

Oh yeah THAT room mate...the one who snored like a sodding freight train most of the darn night..and yes laughed at my hubby when he got pooed on....but I kinda have to forgive her as she was such a huge help to me when I was bed bound in settling Maddie and helping with said nappy change! I can forgive snoring for that!

Thank you so much for your help Maree!!

Well done Paws!
Its not nice having a rotten birth experience but you soon forget all about that when you've got your beautiful daughter in your arms, safe and sound.
My advice is take heaps of Arnica (I don't think you can OD on it?!?! ), nice warm baths (great for relaxing and to heal the incision), heaps of snuggles with your girl and DH and you'll soon forget about the nasties leading up to her arrival.

You've got so much to look forward to but cherish these first days, they grow and change so quickly
Caitlin has decided today will be "let's surprise mummy" she held her head up (properly) for the first time and did it like she'd being doing it for weeks then she decides that today I will talk... NON-STOP! Don't know what was being discussed with the seahorse on the baby gym, but it must have been good
