    Posted: 25 January 2012 at 2:08pm
Is there any Women who are pregnant with their first baby in Palmerston North?
Im 24 preg with my first baby due end of July. I moved to Palmy in December to live with my Partner, but because im originally from the south island( moved up in april last year), i have absolutely no friends here. I just know my partner, and it gets so incredibly lonely for me.
So looking for PN mums to be, that i can relate to.
Help me keep my sanity?!

Hi,
have you linked up with a midwife there yet? They should be able to tell you about ante-natal groups in the area, then also post natal support groups as well. You can make some great friendships that way - SO important to have that extra moral support, especially when your baby arrives.
Good luck.

Hey kebakat, lol thats cool, im still looking for friends around here to help keep my sanity. I just thought someone who is in same boat as me, that is preg with first baby, id have more in common with. But then again having a friend whose gone through it already could be handy for advice etc

Anna, I do have a midwife, and have found out about next antenatal class but that doesnt start til may i think it was, and still humming and harring over whether to go or not. My sister went to one in Masterton last year and said it was useless... Think if i went it would be to make friends. but till classes start, how else am i to meet people here....

If you are planning on breastfeeding, you could come along to an LLL meeting. There are some awesome mums in the palmy group and they are very welcoming. Pregant women are very welcome at the meetings to. There is one on monday at 10am at st davids church (its not a religious thing, just the church has a nice room to use).

I don't know if Palmerston has a Parents Centre? I would think it does, so that's another place to check out. There's a very active one up here in Whangarei and it also runs ante natal classes. Also, have you thought about Plunket groups?
There's lots of help out there in the community - you just need to know about it.

hehe if palmy antenatal classes haven't changed since I did them then yeah they are pretty crap. You can meet lots of new mums through plunket once bubs is here. They hold coffee groups for mums with similar aged babies if your into the coffee group thing. They also have various parenting related courses so you could also meet some people that way. They have first aid, settling, feeding type courses/talks etc

We did the Parents Centre course in Palmerston North. It was pretty terrible as far as the lessons go, and we had a HUGE group, but I think all but 3 of us still meet up for regular weekly coffee groups (bubs are 11-12months old). Only reason I dont is im back at work almost full-time

To be honest, I havent managed to develop much of a friend circle around here - Im from the South Island as well (nelson/chch) and it seemed much friendlier down there?

There use to be regular ohb palmy meet ups which was a good way to meet new people but they haven't happened in ages. The "oldies" always use to meet up but it hasn't happened so much since most of us older ohbabiers have left. Could always organise something like that. mcd's is a good place for those with little ones otherwise someones house

I think i might talk to the Partner about antenatal classes, if we were to go would be just to meet new people. Since clearly no one benefits from them. Am prob better off reading about everything and asking people for advice.

Isabella, pretty sure south islanders are far more friendlier...

That sounds like a good idea Kebakat. We should organise something...

I think personally for a first time Mum antenatel classes are good cause you do learn things you might not have found out but I found them especially good for DH. I haven't done any with subsequent kids as I still remember the first ones.

I was lucky enough to have a couple of Mum's in my due in thread with #2 so we keep in regular contact, don't have much to do with the ones I met with #1 but then again I did go back to work & time came very precious.

Where abouts are you in PN Amy?? I can put you on to a couple of good playgroups. I've found them really good for getting out of the house after baby is born. Are you working?

As Isabelle says PN is very difficult as a place to get into circles, I don't know why? People are weird here lol Maybe it's our weather lol

I initially thought id definately go to antenatal classes being first time mum. til my sister told me they dont really tell you what you really need to know. so now im humming and harring over it. I dont even know if ill be up for it since the classes i looked at go from 7pm-9pm and atm i struggle to stay up til 7pm to watch shorty st. lol.

Im kinda hoping i meet some cool ladies off this site, i was on the Huggies Forums til i realised its pretty much aussie ladies on there. Burst my bubble a bit lol.

Im atm in Takaro.. but we hopefully are moving to hokowhitu in april when the lease on this place runs out. So cant wait. Do not feel safe here knowing that just over the road is Highbury...
I seriously lye awake in the middle of the night thinking someone might break into the house. and am especially aware since the night someone stole diesel containers off my partners work truck while it was parked in our drive..

I was in Palmerston for most of my life, like Kel said, it can be hard for newcomers to meet people there for some reason, I think partly because it is such a transitional city, people are forever coming an going.
I did antenatal classes through parent centre, and although I learnt a lot more from reading books and through this forum, it was really good for DH and the coffee group I made out of it was fantastic, I Cherie's those ladies and we've all become great friends, even though most of us have since moved away. I would recommend doing the classes.

Also, once baby arrives there are things like mainly music, storytime at the library etc etc which is also great for meeting other Mums.

All the churches have groups for parents with kids, they have some religious content but they're not pushy in anyway. As MamaT says the library has things on, there is a little library off Highbury ave, on Monrad park which is great & they have things there too. We walk over to that one every now and then.

The coffee group you get with antenatal classes is really good, especially for those first few months when you've just had bubs, you probably won't click with all the ladies but there should be a few that you get on with. When it comes time to do the classes, you won't be so tired in the evenings.

Interested to know where in the SI you have moved up from? I lived in Nelson then Chch and moved to Hokowhitu, and to be completely honest I have never felt so unsafe anywhere, ever. Always felt like I was doing things to stop ourselves being robbed. Ive had my car broken into twice since being here, one of those times was at 8pm, while still light, with it parked 10m away from our front door, which was closed but with curtains open. Incredible.

Im not very fond of it here, we are moving to Feilding soon and I am hoping that will be a bit better. I miss the SI terribly and as soon as we can, were off.

But yep our MW told us the only reason to go to the classes is to meet the people. They are based so heavily on the actual birth its just not funny, very little on the what to do when you get home with this wee creature! I know its important to know, but really - teach us danger signs (v impt), when to get to the hospital, a brief overview of all the drugs etc then move it on to the things we really need to know! Cos lets be honest, as soon as youre in hospital at the end of the day it will be the MW and/or obstetrician who calls the shots - we are just there to hang on for the ride

I am happy to try meet up sometime for a coffee but im working almost full-time these days so its getting a bit tricky for me to organise anything!

Im initially from small town Temuka, grew up there, then moved to Chch when i was old enough and studied, lived there for a few years before moving back home because things werent working out, i had tried to move back to chch but never worked (house broken into, car stolen) so back home i went.
My parents moved up to Masterton sept 2010, so after id finished studying in Timaru, i moved up to live with my family. I quite like the north island, its nice, its just finding a safe place to live. Never know i might end up in cambridge (where my family has relocated) so my parents can see their 2nd grandchild grow up. But then ill miss my Niece growing up, shes only 4mths old.

Yeah im not too worried bout what goes on at the birth, i have my MW for that, i want to know what i do when i get home. I felt so naive, asking my sister whose 2yrs younger than me, how to wrap a baby up so its swaddled. Because i have no idea. Im constantly asking her silly little questions but id rather be safe than sorry. At least i know how to put a nappy on, and dress baby!

No matter where you live in the country or where you live in a town theres going to be instances of robbery. It's just the world we live in. I think if you left fuel on the back of a ute in any part of the country if someone spots it at night its an easy target. Hokowhitu is a nice area to live in though :)

Yeah its just unfortunate that some people are lowlives.
The diesel was covered, and there were other containers that were the same fulled up with other substances, so you'd have to know to lift up the tarp and know what container contained the diesel. The thing is i spent half that night awake and going to toilet, thinking about whether someone would try steal something off the truck.
But whats done is done. Still get frightened at night when im lying awake, as silly as it seems.

Hmmm I was curious to see what antenatal meant, it means Before birth; during or relating to pregnancy. So that they are heavily weighted on the birth is very logical, they also do classes on after the birth, it's usually a full day one, I don't think it cost us anymore.

I have to disagee Isabell, you actually do call the shots regardless of where you are. They still have to ask your permission or your husbands permission before anything is done.

I live on the edge of highbury, technically awapuni but post code lumps us in highbury. There are areas on hokowhitu you'd want to avoid as well. I think sometimes it goes more on the look of the street rather than the suburb. If you don't feel safe there though it's definitely time to move. Cross fingers you find a nicer place when you move in April.

I think antenatal classes are actually quite useful, at least mine were. I figure all the stuff with the baby, you figure out as you go along, and you can learn what it is you need to know for your particular baby as you need it.

But it's not like you can stop mid-labour to learn about your options for what next, so that stuff you need to know in advance. I certainly advocate being informed rather than letting your MW/OB call the shots, but it does depend on your birthing philosophy.

I worried about not staying awake till 9 pm too, but actually it was no big deal.

There were 14 couples in my class, and 6 of us still meet up regularly now, over 2 years later. I was new to the area at the time too, and it was a great way to meet new people.
