Topic: Looking for SAHDs in Wellington Posted: 08 August 2012 at 8:28pm |
Looking for stay at home dads in Wellington. My wonderful husband is a full time SAHD with our almost 5 month old son and is finding it hard to make friends, even though he goes to a number of "mums" groups, and he's getting very isolated and lonely :(
Does anyone have a bloke who stays home, or know of any dads groups (or more inclusive groups) held in the city?

sorry, my DH really battled when he was home with our DD (in Auckland) and ended up going to the usual coffee groups as the only guy.
Hope you find some!
Try asking at the local toy library (and the regular library too) and maybe also ask Plunket?

My DH isn't a SAHD, but I'll tell you the place that there's loads of dad's at an activity/group, and that's swimming - so when you're at about the 6 month mark, assuming you like the idea of swimming, I highly recommend that activity for Dad and your son. It may just trigger some introductions and you may find some groups that work for you... We're in Wellington, and we do easyswim swim school, but Wellington and Hutt councils all run programs too... Plunket PIN groups are good too. Hope that helps ...

Thanks, this is definitely something we are looking into. We're in Brooklyn, the only problem is neither of us drive, so getting to groups etc on a regular basis is very weather dependent, and having a fussy/spirited baby means that it's not always easy leaving the house for him! He does go to his PIN group but I think he is finding it hard to make strong friendships as the women are a bit wary of hanging out with a guy... understandably!

Agree with the suggestion of swimming being more weighted with Dad's. So are things like kindy gym - probably a bit early for your wee one but something to think about. There is a class in Brooklyn called Little wrigglers that might have a few Dad's going

Have you joined your local Multiple Birth Club? We have quite a few dads who come along to our weekly playgroup.
