I'm 14wks tomorrow, so a little further along than most on here it seems. I've heard of people hearing the heartbeat using a Doppler at 9wks but I don't know I guess it is a bit of a risk just in case she can't find it, would make for an extremely stressful week. But on the other hand if she did find it it would be an amazing relief, big decision! We heard my sons at 11wks which was so good because I was so terrified of the 12wk scan because that was where we had found out we had lost our first baby....
Good luck no matter what you decide and I hope you like your midwife too, so important to have a good one!

Hi Jessm I've still got a couple weeks to try to convince him to not find out.... Or to give in to finding out he would so play games and drive me crazy if he knew and I didn't and he drives me crazy enough already at the mo! Must have been pretty cool having a surprise? We didn't even discuss it last time, we were dying to know!

I posted this on the fb group the other day, have just charged up the laptop so will put it up here now for those that aren't
on fb

Had midwife today.. she's going to send me to specialist at 20 weeks with possibly of elective c section
 in mind..
I have had episiotomys with my last two, and bad internal tearing, with bad healing. .
so she thinks it's a good option to at least look into. .the healing from an elective would be
easier than risking 3ed degree tears. .

Oh wow, how do you feel about that? Sounds like it could be a good option...
I had an emergency c-sec last time, healed really quick and easy. Although I know that's not the case for everyone who has them. So I also have to see a specialist later on to see if I can give birth naturally this time or go for c-sec. Think I should be all good though.
Bad internal tearing sounds pretty ouchy!!

Sorry no help on that one. I had an episiotomy last time which healed quite well.

I went and bought some maternity jeans at Jeans West today. A friend bought a pair too so it worked out $55 each which I think is quite a good price. Just gotta get them hemmed.

How is everybody going on the food and eating front? I still don't feel like much but need to eat to combat nausea. When it comes to dinner I am generally starving but only manage a very small amount. For some reason I find eating quite exhausting.
Here we go again, another baby on it's way!

Hi all, I'm getting a bit better with eating sem. I have to eat or drink constantly to combat nausea still but less things are making me sick. I rediscovered cheeseburgers in the last couple of days, so good!!

Hey guys! I haven't been on here in ages so welcome to all the newbies and congrats on the good scan!
I had a skype with one of my best friends today - she's in Canada- and was met with such a dilemma. She is 6 30 weeks pregnant with number 1 and planning a homebirth. I am in NO WAY opposed to homebirths at all, BUT my personal experience with my son means i wouldn't' consider birthing anywhere other than a hospital. I was so torn, because I just want to support her and encourage her but my heart seriously stopped for a second out of fear for her too. There is no reason to think it will go anything but perfect, but if it were her second baby I woud feel so much better about it (I think). The trickier thing is there are no birthing centres there, she either does home birth or hospital, and the hospitals are not midwife friendly - it's a much more medical system.

SO, what I'm asking you guys, is what would you do? I didn't say much - I asked her lots of questions about her midwife and she talked me through their systems etc. but I really don't want to scare her so I don't want to say anything negative BUT... I still think it's a huge risk. I'm probably being a bit selfish, I think I want to know that she really is aware of the risks so that I feel like she is making a fully informed decision and I'll sleep better ...

Have any of you had homebirths for first babies or know someone who has? I know that in the "old days" it happened all the time but there are like 900 sides to that argument....

Sorry for the rant...

I really don't know anyone who has had a home birth except one that wasn't planned (bubs came too quickly for even the midwife to arrive!) so I'm no help there. And I have to birth at the hospital because of my c-sec last time so it's nothing I've even thought about. I think she would be better off knowing all the facts though, but she might have done her own research aswell? At the end of the day it's her decision though.... Hopefully it all goes to plan!

I spent all of yesterday thinking it was Thursday, major disappointment when I realized it was only Wednesday! So I'm not 14wks until tomorrow (again!) and today isn't my day off :(
I'm still having trouble with food, although its not so bad. I have to eat all the time but actually finding something to eat that wont gross me out is tiring! Nausea has eased quite a lot too. I have a friend who is 20wks with her 1st and still having serious nausea constantly, poor thing!

Hello to all!!!

how did your midwife appointement go, Kalika? hope you were happy with the midwife...and did she try to find the heartbeat?
I had my last midwife appointement 2 weeks ago at 9weeks 1 day,i convinced her to try the doppler but she couldnt find the heartbeat.
I know that at 9 weeks its quite early so im trying to be patient and not panic till my scan and still i felt i was happy she did try the doppler..... because "one never knows":-)

As to homebirths, i do know personally 4 people who had homebirths
with their first babies from my first antenatal group. I had my 2 children on Waiheke island.... There its a bit different scanario as the choice is home or catch the ferry in labour over to the city (unless its an emergency helicopter)....so the rate of homebirths is quite hight there and the midwifes are well know and experienced.
and i cant remember ever hearing bad scenarios from people on the island.
I was very lucky to have very easy births each time (hope it stays this way ....), so i m probably bit relaxed about it all.

I think if your friend does her research, has confidence in her midwife, has no obvious risks and is aware of her distance to a hospital in case she does need to transfer.... she ll be able to make her decision and be happy and confident with her choise. I think that s very imporstant.
Im bit of a "hospital phobic" so i do understand your friends point of view and on the other hand i so do understand how you feel too, Mon
Hope all will go well for your friend and follows the plan .... whatever plan it ll be in the end.

Mon I would think that she has done her own research and has come to the conclusion that a home birth is what she believes to be best for her. Everybody has a different birth and labour experiences and it is a very individual and personal choice.

Bugger about getting the days wrong cupcake. Hate it when that happens!

Thanks guys! I'm sure she has done her research, I was so surprised because midwives are NOT the done thing in Canada. There are so few of them and it's just not like here in NZ! I'm sure she will be super prepared and all will go fine - thank you for your positive stories!!!

Iceland I saw an OB today and asked her about hearing the heartbeat with a doppler at 9 weeks and she said it was pretty unusual in a singleton pregnancy so I wouldn't worry one little bit!

thanks Mon, yes i know and i m not panicking and trying to be patient.... all this wait just seems so slow...so im on the daily contdown till the scan date.
I ve always found the first trimestr the hardest in this way.... further along eventhough one is tired or uncomfortable etc.. there is the growing bump and all the baby movements to feel.
We are still lucky to have scans at this time...thinking of my mum when she had me when there were no scans etc. We are lucky to have our babies "sneak peaks" along the way:-)

I love scans! I just had mine and it was so perfect, the technician person said the baby was so perfectly placed that he wanted to use my photos to show others so I wasn't even charged for my USB movies. It was so great seeing the baby but now I have to wait 8 more weeks for another one :)I hope everyone elses scans are as exciting as mine was.

I wore patch ones last time, but I got huge and refused to buy anymore towards the end and ended up popping buttons in a few pairs can't wait for the big belly!! Until it gets really big that is.....

Cupcake, i had a nosy in jeans west today, they are good jeans. They only have dark blue & black in store but said they can order the coloured ones in and have them shipped to your home for free. May be a way to go if you want something thats not just blue or black.

Oh I didn't realise that about the coloured jeans. I did see them on their website but thought they where their left over summer stock. I just got the black skinny jeans but might have another look further down the track.

Last day of work for nearly 5 weeks today!!! Big smile Off to Germany on Tuesday. Starting to get a wee bit worried about my non existent energy and 35 hour door to door journey with a 2 year old Wacko
