Topic: unrealistic expectations Posted: 10 November 2006 at 9:23am |
I'm getting really annoyed with people expecting Jake to do more just because he is tall. His Nana rang a few days ago and Jake asked to speak to her. Anyway, he did his usual gabble but said a few things. After he gave the phone bck she said "oh, well, I'm sure he'll pick up talking soon. Must be a family (hers) thing to be slow with speaking". I said to her "v - he's TWO!!!!" what does she expect? Him to be reciting bloody shakespeare to her? It just annoys me! and L's Nana expects him to be this perfectly behavioured child. HE"S JUST TURNED TWO! The problem is, he is the sdame size as his three year old cousin and they expect them to behave the same, despite over a year difference. Annoying!!!!

I had the same with my son. He did most things early - like crawling, walking etc.. but had a speach problem and made worse for the fact that he was tall (and still is I haven't measured him but hes 13 and over 6ft) Speech is fine now.
Theres not alot to say really except point out his age like I felt I had to to everyone whom met him as they would look at me when he talked to find out what he said - fustrated him and me. I'd say ask him again...

We had the same problem with Jayden he was and still is very tall for his age so people expect much more from him. I am forever getting asked in the shops why he isn't at school. Jayden is now a few weeks away from five and I have jsut learnt to ignore it, you kinda get used to it. If all else fails tell them to butt out.

I have that as well Liz, and even the "why is he still in the nursery school he should be at the pre school with the rest of the 3 year olds". That really annoys me. Andrew is tall (he's 2 1/2 and measures 95cm tall) but his dad is 6 foot 4 so it is expected that he is tall. I am a little lucky that Andrew has good speech now - but only since he has had grommets put in. Grin and bear it for a little while or jsut do what I do with grandparents and lose it and tell them he is not their child and he is doing great for his age - quite often done to the in-laws.

I remember my neighbour's sister coming home in a steam one day because a random person (unbelievable how that happens!) had had a go at the supermarket about how her child should be toilet trained and not in nappies 'at her age' ...she was less than 3, and in the final stages of training, but is an extremely tall child and the size of about a 4 year old. You know what they say about assumption ...? It's the mother of all **** ups!!
Also, FYI, my neighbours child at jsut over 2 spoke in the same way. She's coming up 3 and is yacking away like nobody's business!

Charlottes another tall one (shes 2 1/2 and just clocked 1m!) and we get the same- especially in her nursery class. People are usually shocked when I tell them how old she is but I do try to mention it alot because people do judge when they think children are behind. She is the tallest in her nursery class but she is the second youngest so I think people do expect more of them.
We'll just have to hope that our tall poppies rise to the challenge

what IS great is that there are two other little boys a bit older than Jake at playcentre and they are all acting the same. We talk about them, and watch them smack each other and leave them to it. It's really nice to have two other like minded mums for my boy to be "friends" with. Also the other ladies at playcentre are fantastic for saying "well, he IS only two, of course he won't be used to sharing yet" and things like that. It's more people that haven't been around children a lot.
My s-sister was in the chemist one day with her tall boy (seriously he looks about 9 when he's only just turned 6) - this was when he was 3, but looked about 6. anyway, this woman came up to her and handed her a note for a speech therapist. She was appalled!

Oh lizzle, that is so hard! I have known a few tall for their age kids - one 3 year old at kindy (when I taught there) was the size of a 6 year old - that was really hard for her.
And James - isn't it funny how as soon as people know yoau re pregnant you lose your identity! How dare a random stranger think she can even tlak to you let alone cast judgements on you! Grrrrrrr.

He he - I always get the weirdos talking to me james, so I try to avoid as many people as I can! Don't mind the lonely oldies, just the nutters I can live without!
