Topic: How old are they? Posted: 03 December 2006 at 1:43pm |
Random question here....
When someone asks you how old your kid is, do you say (i my case) "4 1/2 months" or "20 weeks"?
A lot of the girls at my antenatal group are saying that their bubbas are 5 months because they're 20 weeks

i counted weeks as well, but when i counted months i went from monthly anniversaries. as in Taine was born on the 17th of Jan, so 17th of feb - 1 month, 17th march 2 months...etc. but when you get to 20 weeks, i think that is still only 4 months and a bit. it's funny cause we say you are pregnant for 9 months, but if you say each month is four weeks, then you are actually pregnant 10 months (Japanese say 10 months)

yeah i used to do the same Liz, after about 3 months old i stopped using the weeks cos people just get confused. People ask how old our girls are and we usually get oh? really.. they usuallythink Paris is older by the way she speaks and acts and her height.. and they think Ayja's younger than she is, cos she's tiny and little. lol

I use lots of "almost's" and "abouts"... but usually just go by monthly anniversaries now. It's a hard one though !

I normally say months as most people have no idea what a 20 weeker can do but have some idea of what a 4 month old can do.
I had a to do with a friend when I was pregnant about this subject, she would say that we were 3 months pregnant at 12 weeks when really you were only 2.5. I called it "week months" in comparison to regular, 30-31 day months.
I'm anal and pedantic about that sort of stuff!!
After all, you're a year older in 12 months not 13!

I go by months because most people forget or don't know really what a 20 week old baby looks like. I guess I start that from the 2 or 3 month mark. But then I always have to write the weeks on my calendar for when Plunket etc ask!
With pregnancy, if it's a pregnant mum I'll tell her weeks. At the moment I mostly just say 6 weeks to go (yay!). Until now I have been saying how many months I am, based on the calendar month of my due date. ie I'm due on 14 January so on 14 December I'll be 8months preg.
It is a weird one

We've started saying Maddie is 2 months old...seems easier and less confusing for people...especially non baby people.

I have lost count of the weeks, so when asked this morning, said 5 months at the end of this week - think I'm gonna go with x months and x weeks from now on.

I said weeks untill he got to about 3 months old, then went by the monthly anniversaries. A (non baby) friend of mine asked me the other day why on earth I would say 17 months old instead of 1. I said to her that the difference in abilities between a 12 month and a 17 month old can be huge! She just looked at me like I was weird, so I say nearly one and a half to people who have never had babies, and 17 months to baby people. He will be 18 months tomorrow, actually. I used to think this was dumb as well, until I was a baby person! As for the pregnancy, I go with the 10 months preg thing as well (as in 10 4 week months) but some people find that difficult to get their heads around. I just say 10 weeks to go and counting or whatever...

I say Briona's 1 1/2 (she's 16 mos) and I think I'll just say that until 20mos after which I'll say "2 in July". I find non-baby people don't really get the idea of months after 12 or 18, but there's a huge difference even from 12 to 16 mos but of course that slows down a bit after the 1 1/2 yr mark.
And Hannah was just 2 1/2 until she was 2 3/4.... by which time she was just "3 in Dec" and of course she's now old enough to tell people - with fingers held up - that she's 2 and NEARLY 3. She's so excited!!

Ha, isn't that funny, if you go by weeks your baby is generally older than what she/he would be if you go by months so which is correct.
Lycan will be 20wks old tomorrow but wont be 5mths old till the 19th....I've had this discussion before and have decided that it is just easier to say he's 4.5mths old rather the 20wks.
I was out shopping the other day and a lady asked me how old he was i said 20wks and she replied 5mths and i sais no 4.5mths old she looked at me side ways as if to say 20wks is 5mths dummie...so that just proves it's easier to use mths...i think so anyway, but each to their own.

Yeah people get confused when they ask how preg I am If I saw 13 weeks they say oh 3 months so I say well the baby has been in there for 3 but will be coming out in more than 6.
I also can't say Jack is 11 months until the day he is 11 months. I go by halves so I would say Caitlin is 4 and a half months
