Topic: Making baby food questions Posted: 02 February 2007 at 2:39pm |
I've taken a break from the kitchen - I almost feel like Martha Stewart!
I've got heaps of fruit and veg that I'm steaming, then mashing/pureeing but I'm not sure about:
Do I steam the meat too?
Do I put the cooked meat in a blender? or raw meat then cook the meaty gloop?
Do I add meat to the veg gloop then freeze together? or should I have a seperate container for the frozen meats/veg and defrost the amount I need for each dinner?
and most importantly - Does anyone on here have a baby that has a wheat/gluten allergy?

I make "casseroles", often just on stove top, but cook very slow to make the meat tender and eay to cut up. When JJ was little, I would just use my stick blender after I had cooked it to mince it all up. I did, and still do, freeze the "casseroles" seperately, then I can choose different veges or whatever to have with the meat, for variety. I just make old fashioned casseroles with gravy bases and add in veg, then serve with rice, pasta, spud or whatever, although your situation might be a bit diferent, but I always serve with extra veges on the side as well, bits of carrott, broccoli, etc.
I remember plunket telling me to make it more like a gravy than a casserole at first, until he had a grasp on the chewing thing. Stick blenders rock, although it is probably less mess in a blender/food processer.

Sorry, no help with the wheat/gluten thingy either.
Also, I make enough for 2 meals per container, and just vary the vege part the next night. The jars from bought baby food are great for storage as well.

Haha! I've been doing that too today Toni (but not as excessive as Martha Stewart! Just a bit of brocolli and courgettes for today - which with a bit of pumpkin was a roaring success!).
Not really sure about the meat thing. The casserole thing is a good idea. Do you have a slow cooker/crockpot? Perhaps you can put a bit of meat and veges and water all in that and set it for 4-6 hours. Or even better, if you do a crockpot meal for yourself and hubby, use a few cubes of meat for Caitlin's dinner and puree that with some mashed veges.
My guess is you can freeze the meat and vege together - no different from being combined in a tin/jar, is it? I don't really know though. My other guess would be to cook it before mixing it with the veges. I know how you're feeling!

i didnt both too much with meat in the beginning. i sued to freeze all mine in ice cube trays then empty into a bag and take out what i wanted from each one... and i also froze those cans of lambs fry for babies the same way and would add one of those to a couple of cubes of veges. it wasnt till later that i started cooking up meat, usually mince to start with. i would cook first then blend it up.

Poor Jack had the most boring and probably tasteless meals. I used to get diced meat and boil it for ages and then chuck it in the blender (preferably with the water it was boiled in) and freeze it in ice cubes and he would have 2 each meal. For veges and fruit and I would peel and dice and boil up and then chuck it in the blender and freeze in muffin tins and he would have one muffin with the 2 meats.
No allergies here but he didn't have any pasta or anything for ages. Is she OK with potatoes? I have no idea what has gluten in it but you could get gluten free baby rice and add that in?

Rach I have no idea what has Gluten in either as I've never had ANY food allergies (they say they get all their bad bits from Daddy ). I spent last night reading up on it and the good thing is that it's an easy one to look out for as by NZ Law it must be disclosed on the ingredients label.
I think I'm going to do the seperate containers thing, at least that way if she doesn't like something I don't have to throw the lot away.

i would cook the meat and then blend it. some kinds of meat "stick" together after cooking - like chicken and pork. so if you blended them before and then cooked - you'd have a patty. nice - but not for a baby.
