This is starting to drive me in sane. Lachlan just is impossible when it comes to this time. He just cries everytime its nappy changing time. I did wonder if he just hated being on his back so today I put a cushion under his head, he thought this was great and was kicking his legs around and laughing until I went to change his nappy and he started crying and wriggling around. Today got his nappy off, managed to clean him up and he crawled away and he was happy as lawry and then he piddled on the lino - thank goodness it was lino not carpet. That is a bonus. A distraction just doesn't work these days either.

Is this a stage or how I can I get this to be no so much of a mission? Any suggestions?

I had the same problems and still do. I try and give Jack something to play with or sing a funny song long enough to clean his bum and then I let him go off with no nappy. Sometimes I put the nappy back on when hes standing up holding onto something or just quickly roll him over and put it on.

When someone else is there I get them to hold him down and play with him so he doesn't even notice.

What a pain in the ar$e for you!  Do you have a change table with a secure strap?  No help with the crying, but maybe the wriggling.  Maybe sticking a change mat or mattress protector in his pram in the lie-flat position, clicking his arms in (if you needed the leg bit to secure them could have it long and over his hip) - so he's held in place for the nappy change.  And after a few days of not being physically able to wriggle away he might just give up on trying?  Random idea, I know.  But I remember a friend saying that her first baby never tried to wriggle away because she'd used a change table for a while and he physically couldn't, then he never bothered when on the floor for nappy changes.  But her second never had the table and as soon as she could, she was up and away!

Emma Rose is JUST like this too, and we have a change table so I need to be extra vigilant when she sits up and tries to crawl over the edge. Usually I whip her pants off/unbutton her onesie while still holding her, then plop her down and dump about 15 toys on her while I race to change the nappy. It's a mission, especially when there's poop all over her bum and I'm trying to scrape it off and hold her down at the same time. I don't know of any foolproof baby-wrangling tactics for nappy changing either! I think they all go through the "trying to escape" stage when it comes to nappy changing! Good luck.....

Its a boy thing as well trying to change them at that age. We sometimes had to pin Andrew down (with my legs over his arms) to change him or if we were both at home one would hold him and and the other would change. It does pass (eventually) I promise .
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Yea I think all babies go through this at some stage too. I put the baby on the floor and if necessary, put my knee on her chest. Then I talk the whole way about what I'm doing (at lightning speed), including cheery "nearly done!"s etc. In my experience the stage doesn't last long. Most babies just hate the restriction/interruption from play.

Hey thanks ladies for your suggestions. Just tried the singing one "Five Little Monkeys" of all things, and kind of jumping around like an idiot and it was nice and peaceful and no wristling, man it makes it so much easier.

It's good to know that I don't have it by myself.

I abandoned the change table for a couple of months when Maya went thru that stage coz I could manouvre her better on the floor.. She did get over it I think once she was old enough to realise that the whole thing was over and done with faster if she co-operated.

Such a good idea, Emma -- I've been thinking of giving up using Em's change table for a while too. Maybe we should all try it and see how we go! Anything to make the nappy battle easier... Although my back will be stuffed. Oh, well!
