Ethan is eating three meals a day.

He is still eating pureed food and I am trying to introduce lumpier food but he just won't take it. He will however eat a mashed banana (quite lumpy). So two things:

1. How can I introduce lumpier foods without him gagging and choking (he has done this and it scared the s**t out of me so I don't want it to happen again)?

2. What kind of foods are you offering your 7 month old. I am just learning and don't really know what he should be eating.

I am just using the tins and want to start cooking my own because tins are too expensive. Does anyone have any tips/receipes for babyfood?

Thanks Ladies

Ayja hated lumps, she did the same gagging - but happily liked finger food and now eats most things absolutely fine.   has been along time sincei had to deal with that so can't help much but if you want to make your own start off with cooking up veges and go from there. We used to cook a little bit of mince up - either beef or pork mince and add a tiny bit of a gravy mix to it or something to give a little flavour, then puree it up once it was cool and freeze it, we would then add that to the veges etc. you'll probably find that home cooked pureed stuff is that step in between - the tins have very defined lumps. they go from runny as heck to lumpy in one step up. homecooked stuff has that thicker consistancy once pureed. We just used to leave a little of the water the veges cooked in in with the veges (not too much only enough to make it nice and smooth) and just used those stick blenders to purree it.

Ok so with Mikey he is pretty well eating anything he is not so keen on lump's as yet   we have introduced Mairmite sandwiche's which he love's.  May try thing's he can feed himdself.   like toast's that sort of thing.  As far as making it yourself for Alan we use to just boil up a big pot of vege.  Patato,Pumpkin, carrot's, parsnip, a wee bit of silverbeat.  Then mash it and freeze it.  He loved it in fact he would still eat if i let hime he a bit of a lazy eater.

mikey was a gagger as well, i thought he'd never be able to handle lumps but i just kept trying and eventually he got the hang of it. it is scary when they gag and throw up though.
i think at 7 months i was starting to offer a bit of meat. i'd boil up chicken pieces for ages until the flesh was falling off the bone then i'd boil up kumara or pumpkin or something in the stock and put it all (minus the bones) in a blender until it was smooth enough.
good luck with the gagging!

Piper is the same now and just refuses to eat anything with lumps, jams her mouth shut and screams the house down until I give her something else. I have kept on persisting and managed to get her to eat a jar of watties pumpkin & couscous with soft veges so hopefully she will keep on trying as I try new recipes for her

I've got this site in my favourites for when we cross the 'solids' bridge. It seems to have quite a bit of helpful info on when to introduce foods and also a heap of recipes - have a look

Well I had no end of trouble trying to push lumps onto Olivia but the bottom line is that I had to wait until she was ready. As soon as she displayed signs that she was Ok with lumps I did a full switch over and even though for a while there she ate a fair bit less, she still ate. Unfortunately she got quite sick with an ear infection and teething so I ground everything to a halt and when she was better started up with finger food which she was much happier with. Fruit salad from the tin, crackers, mashed spud and mixed veges. She loves peas! Now she will eat any texture as long as it has enough flavour (you are still to go through that one so I'll leave that as a surprise ).
Keep up the good work mummy!

Alyssa is about a month older than Ethan and is exactly the same with lumps so I'm still having to give her pureed food as well. I'm also still on tinned food as it's just easier for me. Occassionally I have tried the "mashed" variety and she gags as it still has too many lumps. Funnily enough, she seems to be ok eating the lumps from cruskits and rusks..

I guess since I posted about it and got lots of useful responses I decided not to worry anymore and am just letting her eat the purees as long as she wants..I guess it's true what they say, it's not like you ever see a 5 year old still eating purees hehe

This might not work for all babies, but what worked for us when we were introducing Benjy to lumps was mixing his pureed food with a couple of spoonfuls of lumpy foods and then gradually increasing it until it was entirely lumpy.

We have only just got Tyrell onto lumps. We tried for ages and he just jammed his mouth closed and grunted at us. We just waited till he was ready....he is full on into lumps now, so we just mash his food. Makes life so much easier.
I mix between tins and my own. Just so he gets variety.
