Topic: At wits end with grizzling Posted: 26 June 2007 at 2:33pm |
Gah! Ok, feel better now.
I feel really bad about doing another ranting post but I'm just getting too the end of my tether. My 10mth old girl has grizzled almost constantly since she was 3 weeks old. We've had a few good weeks but the rest have been horrid. This week is proving to be one of the worst. Thankfully she sleeps wonderfully but is so horrid when awake. She has just spent the morning grizzling / crying and nothing will distract her. I tried pamol, bonjela, teething powder, teethmed spray, things to chew on, tv (!!!!) but nothing helps.
It's just hit home that she is 10mths old (today) and is still a miserable unsettled baby. I don't know how much more of this day after day after day grizzling I can bear! We were just at a friends house and her 10mth old was so happy crawling around and playing and Elle just sat and cried through the entire visit. Maybe she'd be happier if she could crawl :( but sadly she just sits.
P.S yes we've seen paediatricians, osteopaths, naturopaths, doctors, plunket, etc etc. We've tried it all and they all say it is just temperament.
Sorry - just needed a rant.

Rant away! After saying I'd give mine free to a good home I'm even beginning to consider not-so-good homes Poor old Katherine came over to work this afternoon and I spent the entire time juggling a grizzling, dribbling mess of a Mercedes-baby who polished off a whopping 240ml of formula then promptly spewed it all over me. Or was it Sienna that spewed? Who ever knows!
I don't have any advice for you, I'm about as stumped as you are with Elle's grizzling, but I can say that teeth are definitely the root of all evil in our house so with a bit of luck that's what Elle's problem is at the moment too and it will all be over soon

have you tried her in a jolly jumper yet???
and i would agree that her teeth may be playing up ... so dose her up, give her a drink, take off her nappies and let her play (or should that be grizzle) in the sun. being nappyless always cheered the boys up for a little while.
oh and i was reading this morning ( a bit OT sorry ) that swimming may help an immobile baby get mobile and i thought of you fiona...

If it's a temperament thing, have you found out what she likes to do yet? Be in the stroller, go out, stay home, play with you one-on-one, new toys, more space, friends visiting....? Is she over-tired? You've probably tried a heap of stuff but I don't know what
My DD1 didn't crawl until 10mos and even then didn't ever get into it. 3 weeks later she learnt how to walk while holding our hands, can Elle do that yet?

We've been using a jolly jumper since she was about 3mths old so she's over it now. Yes busymum, she does walk holding our hands...it is the ONLY thing that keeps her happy so you can guess how I've been spending my days. She also likes Pak'nSave. Other than that...there is nothing that works reliably. She seems antsy with everyone and everything.

Fiona - Ashleigh also LOVES to walk holding our hands. But to save my poor back I have borrowed a walker (I know, not endorsed by Plunket but I think they are fine if you keep an eye on them) and Ashleigh is really happy in it. She can walk around by herself - and get into mischief!! Just an idea - you can prob even hire them from Toy Library.

Might try that. I've been offered one by a friend. She definately isn't tired...sleeps 13 hours each night + only stays up a max of 2.5 hours during the day before going back to bed. Naps are 1.5 to 2 hours and she has 2 or 3 of them per day.
Thanks for your support. Just needed to vent.

Awww, big giant hugs, Fiona. You sound miserable, so feel free to rant away -- it won't help the grizzliness, but it will help YOU!
My mom's cousin had a little girl who was classified as a "high-needs baby" and did exactly what you are describing -- grumpled constantly, grizzled nonstop and was basically unsettled all the time. I just spoke to my mom and she said that she actually thinks that was MY problem when I was a baby, as I did exactly what her cousin's baby (and your Elle) did. Her cousin's baby was also diagnosed with a sensory integration disorder, which was where the "antsy with everyone and everything" came into play, but I'm afraid I don't know much about that (and mom had to hang up before I could ask her more!).

Thanks Katherine. I've read up on sensory integration disorder and it's a fascinating area. I emailed with a physical therapist in the US who specialises in that area but she said that if Elle does have it is mild as there is no one sense (e.g. sight, sound, taste, touch, movement) that clearly causes her upset. Once she can talk I guess we'll know more as she'll be able to tell us what is irritating her.

Poor wee poppet, and poor mummy. All I can offer are big hugs... And my mom's parting comment before she hung up: "Well, my cousin's baby is now a teenage violin virtuoso, and you've got a Master's degree, so maybe being a high-needs baby is just the first step toward genius!" LOL

Hehe, yup I've heard that theory too. The pessimist in my thinks it is too hopeful to think that she is just grizzling as she is a genius but you never know! Next time you chat with your Mum, could you please ask her when those little one's became a bit happier? I know all babies are different but I'm still interested to know.

Aww sweetie! All I can offer is lots of and the use of Caitlin's walker if you want to borrow it.
Perhaps she's bored? Just thinking along the Genius line. We're going to start going to PlayGroup soon (probably Titirangi), you're more than welcome to join us

Yeah she does seem to get bored really easily and is also easily irritated. Play group sounds good though titirangi is quite a long way away from us. Let me know the details once they are sorted :)
