Topic: My baby is now losing weight Posted: 03 August 2007 at 3:52pm |
Not so good news on the Jeremy weight front. he actaully has lost weight this week. He is down 130grams (4.5 ounces)from last week.
So that means over the past 3 weeks he has only gained 40 grams (1.4 ounces). We are gonig to see the doc on Tuesday but man that seems a long way away from today.
Please everyone keep your fingers crossed for my wee man that everything is OK and he is just having a slow growing month.

Spudling, is he on bottle or bm? If bm I wonder if you can 'fatten up' your supply over the weekend?

I had this probelm a few weeks ago. Are you BF? If you are I can PM you all the stuff I have been sent from a few lovely ladies on here if you want. It has stuff to fatten up your milk and they do work.

Ok well that's a good thing (bf) because it either means there's not enough fat in it or that he's allergic to something - more likely the first thing. In other words, it can be rectified. Oats (ANZAC biscuits, porridge) and coconut milk (smoothies with 1/2 cm in it) are great. Your mw should have been able to tell you this stuff but I guess you've already been discharged from her care? Anyway grab the stuff from Becks and fingers crossed for a fattening weekend!

Hi Ladies, are you able to post or pm me with ways to fatten up your BM as Caleb (5 weeks) is slow to gain weight and I want to fatten him up myself rather than top him up with a bottle.

or this one i found on TNN
1 cup butter or marg
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 cup brown sugar
* 4 tablespoons water
* 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal*
* 2 large eggs
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 2 cups flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
* 1 cup or more chocolate chips
* 2 tablespoons of brewers yeast* (be generous)
Directions:
Preheat oven at 375 degrees F. Mix together 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal and water, set aside for 3-5 minutes. Cream (beat well) margarine and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mix well. Stir flaxseed mixture and add with vanilla to the margarine mix. Beat until blended. Sift together dry ingredients, except oats and chips. Add to margarine mixture. Stir in oats then chips. Scoop or drop onto baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment or silpat. The dough is a little crumbly, so it helps to use a scoop.
Bake 8-12 minutes, depending on size of cookies.

That recipe I PM'ed to Spudling. Things like not drinking caffine drinks is one. Lots of water. Banana smoothies is another way to fatten the milk.

Aw, hon.... I feel for you on the worry that it causes when our wee ones don't want to grow. Big for ya, and do take good care of yourself too, because it doesn't help to be strung out with worry, as I'm sure you already know. Do you need a bit of a pamper this weekend? A chick flick and block of choc tonight? Hey, chocolate might help with the breastmilk for all you know... worth a shot anyway . Also, resting helps your milk - exercise is all good, but when you're trying to boost your milk, rest is where it's at, so put your feet up and don't do any housework all weekend!
Is Jeremy an active little baby? Because little wrigglers do burn off a lot of energy moving about, and they tend to be slender babies.

Emma, I have a great relationship with my Doctor and the nurces at the pratice so thanks for the warning. I would have never gone there thinking she would suggest anything like bottle feeding (and hopefully she won't) but its a good idea to be prepared just incase, cos just like you, I would cry I know I would.
I have to admit that I am struggling with the thought that maybe my milk isn't good enough, makes me feel very inferior instead of super-human which I think anyone who has bf should feel

Big hugs Spudling! It's awful when our wee ones are slow to gain weight, you feel so powerless. I remember when Maya was diagnosed as "fails to thrive" at 9 mths all I could see was that awful word "fails" and I felt like I was the worst mother in the world.
Fingers crossed that the milk fattening tricks that the others have suggested work for wee Jeremy. It's great that you have a good relationship with your doctor, it's important to have someone you trust.
And at the end of the day, regardless of how much weight he gains now or later he will be fine! Maya dropped from the 97th percentile to the 3rd and ended up in hospital and I felt like she was never going to grow, but she has and even now 3 1/2 years later she is still a skinny wee thing, I guess it's just the way she is meant to be!

well my Doctor wasn't that worried at all. She checked Jeremy out from head to toe and just said that if he is still not putting weight on in a month or keeps losing over the next 2 weeks then we need to start to wondering what is going on but until then, she told me not to worry and made the comments that
1) most babies that are sick are not contented and just downright miserable
and
2) if my milk wasn't good enough then he wouldn't be sleeping 11-12 hours at night.
She also made the comment that malnourshed African Mums still can feed babies that thrive so there is no reason why my milk isn't good enough
so
yay for my mammaries and yay for Jeremy
