Topic: Birthmarks? Posted: 16 August 2007 at 11:00am |
Alex has a weird mark on his arm. It definitely wasn't there at lunchtime yesterday, but at bedtime last night it looked like this:
At first I thought it was a bruise and I was horrified! I rang the midwife and she didn't seem overly concerned, as it's not raised and he doesn't react when we touch it - she said it might just be a birthmark. But I had always thought that birthmarks were something you were, well, born with
Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any idea what it could be, and why it's turned up after three weeks?

that looks like a bruise! and it can happen easily...I scratched Ella with my ring on her tummy the other day and was shocked when i saw it hours later...i hadnt realised i had done it but knew it must have been from that....
Ella was born with birthmarks - a stork mark between eyes, one in middle of back of head (nearly gone) and one across bottom of hairline at back of neck....some of that one has spread as she has grown and looks like it has "appeared" but was always there and noticeable.

It looks like a small bruise to me as well. I wouldn't woory too much. Andrew had a strawberry mark on his forehead and it was there from birth.

Sienna had stork marks on her eyelids, it was the only way I could tell them apart to start with, and she was born with them. They've faded now. All three of them have mongolian blue spots on their backs which look like bruises, Dad freaked out when he saw Maya's the first time and said she was bruised, but they're just a funny thing peculiar to olive/dark skinned babies.
Maya also has a small indent on her cheek that wasn't there at birth but appeared about 5-6 weeks. Not sure if it is a scar from where she scratched herself or a birthmark but if it's a scar it's weird that it's still there coz it wouldn't have been a deep scratch and babies skin doesn't scar easily.

Hannah got a strawberry mark after a week or so. I didn't notice it until after she started smiling actually. But that one is purple so it looks like a bruise. Time will tell!

It does sound very strange for a birthmark to appear later on, but then if a midwife says it happens, well, they should know! It does look like a bruise though, doesn't it. If they can grow in size after birth, I suppose they can appear after then as well. Has Alex been sucking on his arm at all? Ella sucked a big, raised blister onto her finger before she was born, and I know of a child who gave themselves little 'hickey' marks from doing just that.
....and if it's a bruise, he'll be OK - it's not bothering him which is a good sign.

Jack had one on his arm too. It came a few weeks after he was born and started like a little scratch and grew into the size of a new 20 cent piece and was bright red at 6 weeks and eventually raised up. Now at 19 months its almost gone so if it is a strawberry one I wouldn't worry. i'll see if I can dig up a picture of his for you.

I think that's exactly what he's been doing! I watched him during his tummy time last night, and he kept chomping on his arm. The mark is right where he'd be able to suck on it, and it's the same size as his mouth! Little monster, scaring me like that

yeah they normally heal quite quickly but DH cratched the back of Ellas leg with his watch strap (by accident) a few weeks ago and scratch is still there and was noticeable for weeks....like 4 weeks now! that is the only one that has lingered...
If he is sucking it there then he as probably Hickied himself....a story for his 21st huh?

My Chloe has a strawberry mark.
Its right in the centre of her back...
It wasnt there wen she was born, just developed over time.
But it is raised and the doctors tell me that it can get to the size of a 50 cent piece ( the old ones). It usally completly disappears byt the age of 5.
Its slowly fadding now and is only the size of large pea thank goodness.
But the horrid thing is when shes wearing her bikini in the summer and people see it we us her parenst get the strangest looks.
