Topic: recurrent mc support in wgtn Posted: 14 April 2011 at 8:02pm |
In 2008-09 when I was ttc#1, I found there was relatively good support in Wgtn for someone having recurrent miscarriages. I found the monthly miscarriage support group really helped me get through and for my fifth and only successful pregnancy I got weekly scans in the first trimester through the high risk clinic at the hospital.
Now, I have had mc#5 and find the support group has closed down and the hospital no longer offers intensive first trimester monitoring. Is there anyone in Wellington who has found any substitutes for these? Is there a private obstetrician who will do this kind of monitoring?

awww hugs Vanillabean
The rmc closed down in 2007 just after i had my 4th miscarriage, and the guy who ran it is called Jeremy Touhy, he also ran the highrisk clinic at wgtn hospital.
He closed down his private practice end of 2007 i think, but as i understand it he has gone back into private practice
He is in the 2010/11 phonebook so must be back, his contact details are 3890001 he works at the southern cross hospital...if you tell them why you are ringing they will tell you if he will see you or not.
I cant recommend him highly enough...after FA told me that there was nothing wrong with me and sent me on my way, he found out with one simple bloodtest what was wrong and what do you know, Cory is now almost 2.
If he cant help, he will be able to tell you who can (good luck hun)

*hugs* Vanillabean. I can not imagine what you are going through, but I can second the recommendation of Jeremy Tuohy. I went through him for both my pregnancies and he was really lovely.
I hope you can get into see him and that he can give you some answers and direction for the future. FX

Yeah, someone just told me that Jeremy Tuohy has just closed his private practice to new clients again. No point seeing his for tests because I have done them all 2x and nothing ever showed up. I just want someone who will prescribe some aspirin, progesterone and clexane and give me weekly scans in the first trimester.

I'm with Michel Sangalli (in Riddiford St - right by the hospital) - he's apparently a high risk specialist (he was recommended to me by my Auckland obstetrician when I relocated to Welly), and I have found him and the care he offers to be excellent. He has a private practice.

Hi Ginger, could you PM me his contact details. Also, do you know if he allows shared care with an independent midwife?

2 girls in my ANC (normal pregnancies, just wanted an OB) used Michel and loved him, they said they would use him again next time.
Not sure about the shared care tho, I know one of the girls didnt like having his 3 MWs look after her postnatally as they kept giving her conflicting advice (about BFing) but thats nothing to do with him
All the best VB

I've heard good things about Michel Sangalli too, but not with him. I gather you have had a diagnosis for the clexane etc.
I went through the public hospital for recurrent pregnancy loss (karyotyping I'm guessing yes, but have you had this done?) so they're still investigating. I thought Jeremy Tuohy was still there - there's a door with his name plaque on it anyway. Not sure about first trimester support - not got that far, but I would have thought if there was some definite issue they would monitor you closely after 5 losses.
MC group closed last December when the facilitator moved out of area (I went to a few of those meetings too . . .) but I think its Sarah who is still here as a contact just no groups running. They're still completely emailable if you need support, but I'm guessing its more early pregnancy than mc stuff that you want?

Hi there, I have just found out that I am pregnant again which is great news and we are trying to stay really positive about this one... I have had two MC in the past year and am finding it really hard to to be super nervous about this one! Is there any advice/suggestions for dealing with a pregnancy after MC and trying not to stress over every small twinge or cramp? Thanks ladies

Hi Spanna, its pretty much impossible not to have some anxiety. Just be aware that this is a very hard time and you need to cut yourself some slack and if possible tell some other people so they can support you. Close monitoring of the pregnancy (through regular blood tests and scans) can be reassuring if it shows things are progressing normally. However, they can cause extra stress if they have unclear results. Try and keep faith that you will have a baby (because almost everyone who experiences recurrent mc does) hopefully from this pregnancy but if not from another one. Good luck.

Hi Girls,
I'm new to this forum (not to miscarriage though). Does Michael Sangalli see patients prior to pregnancy?
My husband and I ttc for almost 4 years with 4 miscarriages before our daughter was born. She's just been dx with Aspergers and anxiety, so it's been a HARD almost 6 years with her.
I have had 3 losses since she was born. 2 ordinary miscarriages and a loss of twins.
I have had every test under the sun and all they can come up with is elevated testosterone, though I have arthritis so it's probably an autoimmune thing with my body attacking the developing babies.
I take 5mg of Prednisone daily and had hoped it would help not reject a pregnancy but it doesn't seem to have worked.
We were thinking of heading in to Fertility Associates but I'd rather not go the horrid Clomid route just because it's cheap to prescribe.
I haven't heard of either of these doctors listed above and my curiosity is piquied!
Also, I was told there is a miscarriage support group starting the 2nd week in July in Ngaio.
This is what was emailed to me:
A new Wellington group has formed and will begin having their meetings in July. This is from the site:
Venue will be the Ngaio Plunket Rooms at 65 Ottawa Road
First meeting is Monday 4th July
7:30pm start
Please come along for a cup of tea and talk.
We will meet every first Monday of the month.
Please feel free to call Sarah between meetings on
Ph.(04) 384 4272
or email her on

yes I had heard about the mc support group being restarted. The lady who will be running it is ace.
Sorry for all your losses Maumama, you've had a hard run.
When I had my last mc my GP suggested if I wanted to get private investigations instead of waiting on another list, she recommended sangalli. I think she had to write a letter to him. I probably would have gone and seen him, except I never heard from him and the RPL clinic appt came up after 3 months (and the rest is history).
Would your GP be able to write a letter of recommendation? Or maybe just give him a ring
http://www2.everybody.co.nz/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1148767&page=1&fpart=1 found this thread, don't know if you've already been over there?
Maybe PM one of the posters on therefor his contact details if they're not listed online?
Goodluck, hon
