Topic: double buggies.....what are the choices? Posted: 17 March 2008 at 2:36pm |
Ok, I know this is early on but I am a planner and I want to start working out how much this second bubs is going to cost.
What are my options for double buggies? Mountain buggy? I already have the Urban Elite and have loved it. Has anyone used the double one and what accessories work for it. I couldnt find on their website info about the shade covers etc.
Phil&Teds? I'm not sure if I like the idea of stacking them one on the other and I figure Tom is going to need the buggy for a while too.
What age do you boot them out and make them fend for themselves?

I didn't have a double MB but I did have a double side by side buggy the same dimensions as the MB and it was a PITA. It didn't fit thru internal doorways and was big and bulky, I ended up buying a twin stroller as well and only using the buggy when we went out walking. The twin MB has it's own accessories (shade cover/storm cover etc) but I'm not sure what comes with it. The RRP is about $1200 tho
I switched to a Phil and Teds when the gremlins were about 10 mths and it is great, much easier to manoeuver around the place and takes up way less room in the boot. I've never used it in NB/Toddler configuration, only Toddler/Toddler and the gremlins both have plenty of room to move. The only bugger is that I can't use the parcel tray as the bottom gremlin throws stuff out of it, and I can't hang my nappy bag over the handlebar as it would smack the bottom gremlin in the face.
As for what age they need a buggy up to, the gremlins are now neary 17 mths and definitely still need the buggy most of the time. They can walk short distances but have no concept of traffic or roads and so are a hazard when they're walking, the buggy keeps them contained.

The bottom gremlin likes to sit in the parcel tray instead of her seat!
Nikki, Emmas buggy is awesome, it's quite light to push too. I'd recommend getting one of those.

LOL nope the bottom gremlin doesn't seem to mind, and I do alternate them so they both have turns. Mel is right tho, Mercedes prefers to climb out of her seat into the parcel tray

The P and T is 20kg for one way and 25kg for the other but can't remember whether the heavier weight is with the toddler seat on top or bottom?

My friend just got a P&T brand new on sale for $470. Good on you for looking this early, hopefully you can get a great price.
Does anyone know if you can get the kiddie board attachment for these for when your toddlers older and doesn't want to be pushed but is also too tired/slow to walk?

If you have a toddler and newborn then once you move from having it in newborn/toddler mode to both sitting upright, then the heaviest kid still has to be in front.. which means that once baby is too big to be in the baby lying flat part, then you possibly have a while where you're a bit stuck,
I found that even though Paris was 2 when Ayja was born, ayja grew out of the baby part quickly, they've since changed it so baby has more foot room though and she was about 6 months old so was too little to be in the toddler seat at the back (the lighter one has to be at the back otherwise, well, having the heaviest at the back causes tippage obviously) she was ok sitting up but could not sleep in there for the risk of closing off her airway.
I must say though i loved it for the fact that like others have said, it was light, it folded up smaller than our old single buggy, i could have double or single depending on how many kids i had with me, it fitted places easily and didn't feel like i was pushing a bus around,
We still use it now, Paris is nearly 5 but there are still times, like when we go on family 7km walks, that she would never be able to hack it. She's nearly too big now and really it gets used only for those rare occasions. Ayja thinks it's neat when she does get to go in it in the front part, but she also likes that she's in her back seat, and when the double rain cover is on they have fun pretending they're in their space-ship cos that's what it looks like.
I'd go for it, When you think about it, for the most part once you've got 2 kids, you're probably less likely to go out on your own with them both when they are both due for naps, So chances are thomas will be awake most of the time, and should be able to settle fairly easily sitting only semi-reclined. I loved that with the p&T's at least i knew that Paris was always under cover and well-supported unlike the traditional toddler seat set-ups.
I kinda want to get rid of ours cos i know Paris is too big.. but i like that we still get use out of it even now, that and it adds about 30kgs extra resistance to our long walks when we're pushing them both in the buggy now - that's gotta burn some extra calories.

I have the p&t's and love it. Find it great in baby/todler mode. Alex is nearly 2 and a half, but def still needs his buggy most of the time. I didn't want a side by side double as I thought it would be impossible to get around shops!

I have the double MB. I haven't found any problems with it getting into shops yet. Then again, I've only been out a handful of times so far. It is very easy to steer.
I'm using the carrycot attachment at the moment so it looks huge.
Having grown up with a twin sister I couldn't bring myself to get a 'stacking' one as I imagined the arguments we would have had
It was the 'side by side' and the fact that we were able to get a great deal on MB that we decided to get it.

We love our P&T Josiah's nearly 3 (6.5 weeks to go to his birthday) but small for his age and still needs to go in it. We use it pretty much daily, walking Kiya to school and back etc and as the boys are about the same weight and have been for a few months I let them choose who sits where (they take turns choosing) and that stopped the fights over who got to be in the bottom!

I have a side by side and a one in front of the other. I prefered the one in front of the other when Caprece was small so Jack couldn't get his hands on her and it was easier for in the mall (which was my main use). I'm about to change to the side by side again because I very rarely look round the shops with both of them anymore and Caprece is too long to sleep in the back part.
I have had quite a few times where the side by side came in so handy cos they could both have a nap at the same time, when out walking.

Trying out my Phil & Teds finally converted Emma! I love it, although I only have one kid, have used the toddler seat loads!
Like the Gremlins, Isla is 17 months and sooo needs the buggy still. I dont know what age generally kids start being able to walk around the shops etc without needing to rest etc, but I would say about 3 years.
I dont think there is a toddler board(skateboard) thing that fits to P&T.
