Topic: Worried Posted: 26 August 2010 at 2:52pm |
Hi I am 40 years old and first time pregnant after many, many years of trying. 13 weeks today
I have just had my combined results back today from my second MW visit, they were 1/2900, which placed me at very low risk.
My question is I am still worried and asked my MW if I should/could go for an amnio and she advised that an obstetrician would be against this due to my results, really confused, but so, so happy at the same time, can anyone enlighten me??

Didn't want to read and run. Firstly, CONGRATS!!
Are you talking about the 1st trimester screening results? I think possibly the obstetrician would be against it because amnio can increase your risk of m/c. Your results seem to be very low risk so maybe the obstetrician couldn't justify the risk of the amnio?
I think they start worrying at 1/250? I could just be making that up of course ask your midwife for clarification! That's her job. I'm also sure that other ladies on here will have much less vague advice for you

Rachaels is right. There are risks associated with an amnio, so they generally only want to do one if there is good reason. Your odds indicate that your baby is fine, so they probably wouldn't want you to risk the amnio.
I presume if you really wanted it, you could insist anyway, but I don't see the need?

That is a great result, there is a quite significant risk of miscarriage with an amnio which is probably why they are not advising it given your results are good.
Congratulations!

Congrats!
Those odds are very very low. In contrast, the odds of a MC from amnio are about 1:100 (though this can be better with different docs) but then it might be 1:200.

A big thank you to all of you for your advise - I have decided against the amino as the risk is high considering my low risk - just a nervous first time mum to be, after several failed IVF treatments and then this miracle happened naturally, I am just very nervous. Thanks once again to you all.

Napgirl awesome results! And congrats for getting preg after trying for so long, how exciting!!!
I can give you some advice, one of the bosses here got preg at 40 (baby is now about 11 weeks old, very healthy etc etc) and she was very worried about things given her age etc. I know that she definitely had an amino as she was advised to by her specialist, and it was not to do with her NT results (which I seem to recall were fine) but to do with the age she was. You'll be pleased to know all went very well, and the only time her specialist said her age was a little against her was when it time came for her to push him out, but all went fine. Best of luck for your pregnancy! So very cool when you have tried for so long! It must be the right timing if you did ivf etc and nothing happened then, just trust in God it will all work out right... that's wot got me through the first panicky part (we "tried" for 6 months, but when it actually happened, I freaked out for abit!!!)

Congratulations!
I don't know if you can request it or not, but there was this guy at work who has a DS child.
When his wife got UTD again, they were sent to have a 3D US scan.
Apparently that's loads better for identifing markers for DS etc than the standard US.
If you're that worried, maybe you could try and get one of those rather than the amino which is high risk.

Congratulations!
I don't think you need an amnio with that risk ratio, and I don't think you can get a publicly funded one. I am 35 and my risk came back 1/350 and I have to pay for my amnio because I'm considered low risk.
Issacsmum - amnios are not that high risk! def carry more risk than US of course... but many studies these days say they are actually much lower risk than the .5% that is often quoted...this is because of the advances in equipement and experience. If the amnio is carried out by a Dr who has alot of experience they are low risk....
