Apparently the caffiene is not good for baby, but alot of people still drink coke and stuff too. From what I understand it needs to be limited, I have just had 1 since I found out (I am 10 weeks along), but I reckon that you could safely have a few a week if you really love it, but perhaps start doing that in your 2nd tri once the development stages have taken place? I think it is whatever you are comfy with really.

I haven't been able to stand tea or coffee since about 4.5 weeks.

They say to limit caffiene but whatever you are comfortable with.

from the NZ food safety guidelines for pregnancy:

Drinks containing caffeine, including coffee, teas and colas, should be limited during pregnancy. You may want to consider giving up caffeine altogether. Have no more than six cups of tea or instant coffee, or three espresso-style coffees daily. Energy drinks and ‘smart drinks’ are not recommended as they may contain high levels of caffeine and other ingredients not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

So go ahead!

I'm still having a coffee a day :) Sometimes miss out on it, but seeing as the safe guidelines are no more than 6 cups a day I feel I'm within safe limits!

I was actually surprised at how much was considered safe in a day!

I honestly couldn't stomach the thought or smell of coffee from about 4 weeks until very recently but now I'm kicking many of my food aversions and I'm allowing myself one a day. Caffeine really does affect me now though compared to before I got preg so one a day wakes me up enough and any more just makes me feel jittery and ill!

I avoided energy drinks, I actually had one a couple of weeks before I found out I was utd and I got very sick from it - dizzy, light headed, vomiting and headaches.

I drank coke throughout and had no problems, and I was the sort of person that would drink about 1.5l of the stuff every 2 days...
However now I only drink water - go figure

I've read you can have a single shot coffee 6 times a day.

I'm not a coffee or tea drinker though.

One or two espresso coffees a day are fine. I asked my mw (coz I'm a total coffee addict) and she said anything up to 6 shots of coffee (most espressos are doubles unless you ask otherwise) a day are fine, so if you are fine drinking it (ie, it doesn't make you feel sick) then go for it!!

The only thing is, if you have low iron levels, apparently it can hinder your iron absorbtion, so I would maybe limit it if you are anaemic.

i have always loved one good coffee a day (two on bad days) and since I've ben pregnant I've dropped down to single shots....not as enjoyable as a double but if feels like a good compromise. I have heard that if you're still drinking coffee or lots of tea you should limit other foods and drinks with caffine - like chocolate....

I was told to avoid all caffeine including chocolate *gasp*. That may be because we did IVF though and they wanted us to maximise our chances. I haven't had a coffee in years but still love the smell and I've gone right off chocolate since I was about 5 weeks pregnant. I never ever thought my sweet tooth would leave me, figure it can only be a good thing!

I'm sure caffeine in moderation is fine - we have to take care of our sanity too!!

I've stuck with one coffee or coke a day IF I really need it. I was drinking 2 or more coffees a day before I got UTD but don't really feel like it while I'm pregnant. Coke on the other hand, well I crave it like crazy!!!!

1 a day is well within "safe" limits, specially if you have single shots.

The other thing to consider if you were/are a heavy coffee drinker up till now, you may go through caffeine withdrawal if you cut it out completely too fast ;)

I haven't been drinking coffee, tea or coke during pregnancy because of the caffeine- I don't like the idea of baby being buzzed out lol but I never really drank them often to begin with so it was easy for me to avoid.

I have read 1-2 cups coffee a day is ok, if you drink instant coffee you're allowed a bit more too. The food safety book says 'consider' giving it up, but they don't say you have to. It's a personal choice really. I think it will be ok. Check the food safety book you get from midwife or specialist they talk about it in there.

I have not avoided chocolate at all lol one day I was having bad stretching pains, tried a heat pack, panadol etc etc nothing worked then I ate half a block of chocolate in misery and the pains stopped hehehehe baby likes it I think!

There are pretty much no studies to say it's harmful to the baby so it's really just up to you what you do =) I've felt like a coffee every day with this baby where i never was a big coffee drinker before! Something interesting i read when trying to work out whether i should be having that one instant coffee a day or not. Apparently there was a test done on rats while pregnant. Nothing happened with a little bit but when giving a high dose, the babies were born smaller than usual though it didn't really mean much because a rat is a lot more sensitive to caffeine than humans. The way they explained it, is that you'd have to drink at least 60 cups of cafe coffee a day to have the same effect and the only thing that happened was slightly smaller size babies. I'm sure that one cup a day can't hurt!

I have tended to avoid coffee in the first trimester because it can slightly increase the risk of miscarriage (I've had two, so tend to err on the side of caution in that first bit). It was easy with DS because the smell made me run to the bathroom till 28 weeks! Not so easy this time - was really hanging out to 14 weeks   I've had on average at least one a day since and bubs is currently measuring 2 weeks ahead of dates. I had wondered about the 'slightly lower birthweight risk' and now think maybe I should have drunk more GL

I cant stand the smell of coffee it sends me running to the bathroom, so the office that I share with one other has a no coffee rule now. Before I found out I was pregnant I used to drink coke by the bucket load, since I have been pregnant I havent really drunk any.
