Topic: Living on student allowances? Posted: 07 July 2012 at 9:58am |
Long story, but I'll try keep it brief!
My DH really needs to finish his study, it's an expensive course and would require us to take out a rather large student loan.
The best way for him to do this is to move out of town to attend a training provider full time, the local one is not able to give him the training opportunities required.
I had suggested that the best way to do this would be for us all to move as a family when/if I'm on maternity leave, temporarily and rent out our house.
Reason being is that I don't want to resign from my job, as we would most likely come back home. Plus I can't work without my DH being in town, he looks after our DD while I'm at work, I work nights and early mornings, so can't put her into daycare, so not an option for myself + DD to stay here.
Am I completly mad to suggest we move cities with a toddler and a NB, neither of us with any income and DH studying? Sounds impossible, am I right?
BUT I really want him to complete his study and fulfill his dreams. Ideally he would complete it locally, (thinking out loud), I might try to convince him to look into this!
TIA

What is he studding, how long to finish, how long are you off work for & can he start study at any time or does he have to wait until an intake?

Finishing his Pilot Licence, about 1/2 through now, but he's got to the expensive part which invovles longer flights, rather than just an hour p/day, he was studying part-time after work, but now is required to do full time study.
He would start early next year, it would be a year to finish the actual qualification, then he could apply for practical work at the local aviation college for experience to then apply for an actual job, it would be 4-5 years to get enough flying hours to get a job, but the actual study itself is 1 year.

How much would you have per week to live on?
Oh, and ETA: how much would your rent be, at a guess?

If you are only away for a yr then rent your house out & rent where you are going to be living.
What will you do about your job if not pregnant & on mat leave?

Looking at Studylink it looks like the most you could get is $341.60 (plus an accommodation supplement). Would that be enough to live on? Where would you be moving?

Aviation is tough, your DH is lucky to have your support.
Where would you be moving to? Would it be more expensive to live in the new location?
I worked nights and weekends while I was training and it took a long time, I think funding has changed since my day and you need to do a full time course to get the loan.
Unfortunately it is the kind of industry where you need to be willing to move for a job so be prepared to move if needed. I had to spend a few years in Australia as there are so many more jobs there when you are starting out.
I think you can make it work, if he studies full time he will be qualified sooner and be able to get a job. Good luck

We lived on a student allowance when my husband was finishing up his study. It was a few years ago now so can't remember all the details about how we managed to get through. But we did cope. We had a wee bit of savings which helped at first but also meant we didn't qualify for an accommodation supplement. By the second year the savings were gone & basically we just lived on a very tight budget. Our toughest time was when the allowance stopped & we survived for a short time on student loan only. We were very lucky that the grandparents would totally spoil DD & brought most of her clothes. What kept me going was thinking it will all be ok once DH gets a job - and it was. But after going without so many things for the previous two years it took us quite a while to catch up again.
Looking back it was totally worth the sacrifices, it wasn't easy at times but wasn't impossible.

Could you get accomadation supplement etc? Im sure you can also get study help through winz as well. Every little bit will help.youll want to make sure you arent in any debt before you move, you dont want that extra stress.

Wow all I can say is that the aviation industry is really really tough - I can speak from experience here as taught people to fly for a year. How far through is he? and where about are you looking at moving to?
In terms of moving cities etc, yep that will be hard as well, will be lonely with a new born in a town where you don't know people but can see why you would be thinking about doing it. Good luck and good luck to DH with all the study and hours to get up.
Something extra on the side as you didn't ask about this but... An idea which I am sure he has already been looking into etc is to try to get work (even if it is washing the planes) at a scenic flight company, in hope that once he is fully qualified they will be able to offer him some work to help get his hours up for the commercial work.

This is true renting out any place is consider a income and it will get taxed on.

Also, if your getting paid, either through work or paid parental leave your income will affect how much your husband is entitled to in the way of student allowance.
I think it would be possible if you were extremely frugal, but very hard.
Is that $341 including family tax credits?
Good luck to you and your husband! :)
