Topic: Names too similar??? Posted: 16 May 2009 at 1:45pm |
Everyone thinks we are having a boy again (although we didn't find out at the scan), even I think we are having a boy. I have my boy's name and 2 girls names - Parker (DH doesn't like) and Bella.
Bro and SIL had a little girl on Thurs and they named her Ella - they hadn't told anyone their name choices prior to her birth.
So now I am thinking that if we do have a girl we can't name her Bella as it is too close to Ella. DH thinks I am mad and that we can still name our baby Bella if it's a girl. Mum also thinks I am mad, she says that they will be cousins not sisters and it shouldn't matter.
What are your thoughts? I need to decide if I have to come up with a new girls name as murphy's law says that if I don't have a girls name we will have a girl! And I always seem to struggle with girls names

Bugg3r! Technically I think your DH and Mum are right, but I know in your shoes *I* would prob try to come up with something else... and I know if a friend or relative had a baby close in age to ours and used a name very similar I would probably feel a little ticked off.
I guess it depends on what sort of person your SIL is and what sort of relationship you have? Are you close enough that you could ask her in confidence whether Bella could still be on your list? (She might be flattered you've asked.)
Love both Parker and Bella by the way, they're different without being "out there"

They are different, I'd be fine with it.

SIL is pretty much my best friend (other than DH) so maybe I will have a chat to her when she is feeling up to it (her labour was hard). Bella and Parker go really well with the middle names I have chosen and they were really hard to decide on as middle names. I just dread having to start again, or alternatively talk DH into being happy with Parker!

If they were twins or sisters....then it would be very tacky! But Bella is a super cute name so go ahead....I wouldn't even consult ur brother and SIL about it as really, it's a totally diff name!
I am worried as we have friends here that are due with a girl a month before us. I am just hoping they don't call their bub one of our names.

To me Bella is short for Isabella and not like Ella at all.
I have a cousin who was named after me, and it never bother me. In fact I think my mum was quite flattered that my auntie liked the name.

I have cousins who are a few months apart called Ellie and Valerie - not a big deal when they were named, but they quickly became El and Val so that when you called out to one of them, they usually both responded. But honestly, usually when they were together and you wanted one of them, you usually wanted the other one too, cos it was lunch time or home time or something. So I'd say its not a big deal and go for it. But in saying that, if it were me, I'd probably run it past your SIL first

Ok, will have a chat with SIL soon once she is sorted with her little one. I am probably going to stress over this for the next 8 or so weeks and then have a boy!!
Thanks for your thoughts ladies

If you are pretty close to your SIL and your children are going to grow up spending lots of time together then to be honest I'd probably look at another name as I think they are really similar. Although as someone else said, Bella is short for Isabella, is that an option?

One of my cousins has a daughter named Bella, and another cousin (same side of family so they are cousins too) named her baby Ella I agree with everyone else, but best to check your SIL is happy too!

I had originally picked Isabella but DH wasn't entirely fussed on it so Mum suggested we go with Bella which DH was happy with. Will think about it a bit more but am tending to think I might just try and talk DH round to liking Parker.
ETA: I had picked Bella Jane Lorna R...... as the name so I suppose we could just use her middle name and refer to her as Bella Jane - that would probably make Mum happy as her name is Jane.

IMO it's only confusing if they are likely to have a lot of contact with each other while growing up (ie when you call them).

Your little girl would probably be nick named Bel anyway? esp with a cousin Ella - do you like bel or would that annoy you?
