Well, on the topic of paying (and I know it seems like alot) but The Parents Centre do run them, you do pay, but you also usually get after baby follow up classes (baby and you, toddler times etc) and you get a free bi monthly parenting magazine like little treasures. I have found them to be an excellent source of resources (books, advice, information and support) as well as putting you with great coffee groups.
In saying that, though, you still get good support from other (free) community groups like plunket, etc.
Hope you find what you ae looking for!

I am in Morrinsville so am not much use to you but thought I would add. We did antenatal classes through Parent Centre and it was free.
Get your midwife to tell you the free ones she should know them

I've heard of Mama Maternity but couldn't say whether they are any good or not, might be worth ringing them up for a bit of a chat? I did my classes through North Shore Hospital... would they have a similar scheme through Auckland City / Middlemore perhaps? Good luck !

I'm going to be brutally honest here (and let me just say I'm NOT advocating skipping ante-natal classes) but if I was you I wouldn't panic if you don't get to do a class. They are fabulous for meeting people assuming your group clicks and many people get a coffee group out of them. I have also heard that the Parents Centre classes are the best - had I known I would have gone there.
With that all said, I found that in the end, the class I started at North Shore Hospital, really didn't help me. With the reading I'd done and all the time spent on here, I was pretty darn up with the play and we dropped out on the 3rd week.
I've give your hospital a try and see if they can fit you in but honestly you'll probably find that you know a lot of what some of them cover.
You will also get lots of support once baby is here with Plunket etc and don't forget your specialist is there to cover all questions you may have.

My sister didn't go to any antenatal classes and she had no problems with coping with anything.

Tonight is the 5th of our 7 week AN course run by Parents Centre in Cambridge. No, we haven't really learnt anything life changing (and a lot of the info is repeats of what you discuss with MW)....but we have a real laugh each week sharing ideas about the things we have read/heard etc and have met some awesome couples who I am sure we will stay in touch with and this was my main objective in going. Maybe it is just our group but no-one has dropped out and everyone gets really involved each week - especially the guys which is great as they often miss MW appts and don't do all the reading us women tend to do so they have been asking heaps of questions which is cool.
So even if you already know all there is to know about childbirth and babies you may still really enjoy them and meet some new friends (and hey you may find that you don't know all there is to know). So I would say go if you can get into a course. All of above is MHO of course

I agree with most....if you dont get in it is fine. Yes you get to know the different stages of labour, birth etc...but dont you know that already, from general and on here? You think you are late, I was 27 weeks when I tried to get in and they were all booked! I called the medical centre next to Rainbows end (opposite Westfield)..and thos they were full...I did my oh no what am I going to do in the teary voice...and she said ok I will try and fit you in...and she did.
Try them! Dont know the phone number I am afraid!

I think the problem you are having Bombshell is they don't run them over Christmas. I was the last one in on my one which starts in November for March mums that north shore hospital runs (not sure if others do) for that very reason, otherwise I was looking at Feb.
I have a friend that did both the hospital and parents centre 1 and she said they were about the same, and as poppit says, it is the group that you meet that really makes it worth it, and is really the only reason that I am going, as most my friends are far away from babies (except my internet friends that is ). Leave your name with some as some people do drop out and decide not to attend so you could take up their spots!

I haven't been to any antenatal classes. Having said that, my Mum didn't want me to have Kiya without some idea of what was going to be happening so she talked to the midwives at Waikato Hospital and got the name of a woman who did private classes. This lady (sorry, can't remember her name) came to our place and basically gave me the short version in a couple of hours, covering what our bodies go through during labour and delivery, and she also lent me a couple of videos of women giving birth to give me some idea of what to expect. She was a homebirth specialist, and an advocate for non-intervention as much as possible... I got lots of information from her, but I didn't feel overwhelmed. Normally, she charged for this service, but for us she only asked for petrol money. I guess she didn't want a 20yo firsttimer to feel out of control!
Maybe your specialist or some of the midwives out there (like hospital ones) might know of someone similar in Auckland who could help?

with my first I only did a refresher course as i left it too late - wasn't worth it but I guess put my mind at ease more. I did one this time around more for my husband than me (this is my third hisfirst) I must admit I even learnt somethings. Hubby felt most of it was good but got bored towards the end, was good for dads to get together though.I think he is more relaxed about being at the birth now as he was a wee bit stressed about it. now as for places that do it as I live in taranaki doesn't help you up there but I did ours at parent centre and it was free. my friend did hers through pregnancy help - although this was a 2 day full day course so partners working couldn't go. ours was monday nights for 6 weeks.

Personally I found antenatal classses a bit of a waste of time, and really the only thing I got out of them was my great coffee group!!

I only did it to met other parents in our area and that was really good. As for the person who took it, she was very focused on the mother and baby and did nothing about involving the fathers so that by the end of it all the guys were totally pissed off.
