Topic: Garbage... Posted: 11 March 2009 at 9:46pm |
...guts or disposal!
I don't know where, how or why? But man can my kid Kalyx pack away his food!
Seriously he eats SOOO much, today for example......:4weetbix, bowl of nutrigrain, 1xtoast & banana for breakfast. Bowl of grain sticks, handful of cheese balls, peach-second brekky. Morning Tea(now this last an hour at PC ); banana, bag of vege crisps, orange, Le snack, dried apricots, fruit squirt, bag of mini cookies, salami stick, vegemite cruskit. Lunch- salad bun, yoghurt & apple. Avo Tea- apple, carrot sticks & hummus, cheese balls. Dinner spag & meatballs & jelly..... I kid you not! With little to no wasteage
He is always like this & even begs for food between meals. Its starting to really concern me as he is a biggish boy & I definatley don't want him to be over weight. Do you think he'd stop if he was full? Is this normal?
Not looking forward to his teenage years- Im definately going to be eaten out of house & home

Hi, have you talked to your GP/Plunket to see what they say? Maybe its something like worms or something else that might need further investigation. Good luck.

Lol aren't most kids going through their fussy phase around that age - when my son was around that age (maybe older ...fair while ago now) he was only eating probably about 1/5 of what you just listed, and he was still on the top line of those growth charts in the old Plunket Books
Every kid is diff though and I guess it's better that he eats, as opposed to not eating if you know what I mean!

Have a talk to your dr. Google Prada Willy syndrome and see if anything on there rings any bells. The food you are feeding him aren't the best. Weet bix and nutrigrain aren't very filling for breakfast even thou they claim to be. Go and see a nutritionist or someone similar and see if they can change his diet to help.

Wow that's a lot of food! As long as he is active he should be fine but if you are concerned a trip to your GP or a nutritionist might be a good idea.

Righto...
SO this isnt normal & he does eat alot?
Negative to Parada willis (except the over eating)
Dr is aware of situation & said he must be going through a major growth spurt, is a very, very active boy & needs it - maybe a follow up, second opinion or referal to nutritionist is the go.
Out of interest, what is the best food/cereal?
What & how much do other toddlers eat?
Perhaps what he eats is garbage!? & I thought his diet was pretty reasonable & balanced.. except for quantity

Sounds like a lot for a wee fella of 20 months
I would go and see a nutritionist too, there is lots of variation in his diet, but a few of the things like cheeseballs (I assume they are the chippy type ones?) may not be so good for him. I would think it would be ok in moderation of course.
At that age Janaya was having weetbix for breakfast (I personally thought weetbix was made of 97% whole grains so was really good for you?) fruit for morning tea + crackers and cheese. Usually a wholegrain sandwich and yoghurt for lunch, apple and superwine for afternoon tea + raisins, and dinner was usually meat + veges + pasta.
Good luck, hope it is just a wee growth spurt.

wow that does sound like a lot of food- must be costing you a fortune!
Ella is the same age and today she ate
b/fast- 1 1/2 weetbix with yoghurt & milk plus 1/2 piece of toast ; morning tea- slice of melon, breadstick and some raisins; lunch- a sausage and yoghurt and peaches, afternoon tea -an apple and a cruskit with cheese & vegemite; dinner- a sml bowl of pasta, chicken with peas and some custard and fruit for dessert.
I guess if he is a active kid then he will be burning a lot of it off, and in the photos I have seen of him he doesn't look cubbly at all.
in terms of b/fast cereals we normally alternate between weetbix and porriage.

That sounds like a heap for a 20 month old!!! None of my girls eat that much in a day.
Kryssi is 2yrs 2mos (and biggish for her age) and she eats:
breakfast: 2 weetbix and a bowl of cornflakes/other cereal with milk, yoghurt
a.m. tea: 3 crackers (or as many as we'll let her get), sometimes a piece of fruit
lunch: sandwich or two, depending on how tired she is
p.m. tea: biscuit and bunch of grapes/banana/etc
dinner: last night she had three serving spoon fulls of chicken curry and rice.

Caprece eats about half of that I thought that was a lot. I think you have to look at everything else, if hes happy, sleeping well and seems generally well then I wouldn't worry too much. I think you are feeding him a pretty good diet maybe have cut up fruit available for him to eat as in between snacks?
I think you are doing a fantastic job Glow and if the GPs not worried I wouldn't be terribly worried either. Just keep an eye on it

I thought of something after I went to bed...
A lot of Adults mistake thirst for hunger & there for over eat.
The easiest way to tell if you are hungry or thirsty is to drink a glass of water, if you get hunger pangs as it goes down you are hungry, if you don't you are probably thirsty. This of course providing you are eating normal meals during the day. This is for in between times. We also over eat at meals because of this too...
So my point is maybe he's thirsty? So when he complains he's hungry give him some water. See if that satisfys him?

Thanks for replies ladies
Wow- he does eat alot!
I guess it is way better to eat lots than not at all!
And will eat whatever i give him, is happy, healthy & well adjusted- it could be worse!
He loves his water & has bottles filled up twice daily
This may be of interest to some
Cost of food 2008
A survey the Otago uni did on the cost per week of healthy eating. Our family has a basic diet & spend $160 I dont think Id be able to spend $360 pw for a
family of 4 being what is average for a liberal diet
Do you eat healthy according to the survey?

Wow, that's heaps, must cost a fortune, lol.
I have recently changed my kids eating habits. My kids were becoming too fussy & I am trying to lose weight, so don't want naughty tempting stuff in the house.
Breakfast is weetbix / toast.
Morning tea is cheese & crackers & fruit.
Lunch is sandwiches or buns with ham or jam. Crackers, fruit. Sometimes noodles or cheese toasties.
Dinner is what we have I always put veg on their plates for them to try it. (they now usually eat it)
Plenty of water during the day.
Treats are usually popcorn, & now & then chips & biscuits in the weekend.
I try to stick to this & always try & introduce new healthy stuff especially the fun looking stuff then they think they are getting treats.
Since I have changed the food they eat they have settled down & now ask for fruit & cheese.
School & kindy lunch boxes are packed with good stuff.
I wish I had started this when my 1st DS was little but now glad I have done it now. Good luck.
