Topic: toothache Posted: 01 October 2009 at 2:47pm |
just feeling really helpless at the moment.
Brushing taine's teeth one day, saw a bit of brown. tried to scrub off only to find it wouldn't come off. So rang the dental clinic.
"we don't make appointments, just come in" - so sent Lewis off on a monday...not there.
rang again
"Just come in about 1, i will be there"
lewis goes again while jake is on school visit (same place)
"she's just popped out, should be back in five minutes"
an hour later
"sorry, she was called away"
So we ring dentists
"go to your local dental clinic"
"we don't take under 10s"
three messages left, none returned and it is school holidays
Taine is crying each time he eats because he is sore. but of course, clinic is closed.
So I rang the hospital who gave me the number of an emergency dentists in town
taine is sent home from daycare - basica;lly in sh*t loads of pain
go to the dentist today, who says he has a fw holes and that he can't do anything. he refers us to the hospital for it to be done under general. great, i think, not so much pain for the poor boy.
6-12 month waiting list!!!!!
Won't his teeth be worse by then and need taking out
"probably" says the dentist
"can we go private?"
"no one does it around here"
So, my child is possibly going to be in pain for up to a year!!!!!!
not believing the dentist, I rang the hospital to be told at LEAST 6 months, and then rang privately to be told that they only do extractions, not fillings (which i am trying to avoid)
The thought of him being in pain for up to a year makes me feel sick. the dentist said that the main cause of pain is an infection - which he gave us come anti-biotics for, so hopefully that will help, but what am i supposed to do? feed him up on pamol for a year?
Does anyone know ANYONE around NZ who does fillings under anaesthetic? I will pay!

Poor little man.
I don't know anyone sorry but if I was you I would just get the yellowpages and ring around.
Surely someone will do it, I don't believe that there is no other alternative.

That is appalling and ridiculous !
Both dental practices where I've worked saw under tens, under the SDB scheme.
A child his age, should not have to wait so long , while hes waiting , more teeth could be getting affected.
I think thats really rather sh*t quite frankly , im sorry your boy has to go through that (and you too )

and , dentists can do fillings on little kids without having to go under general ,(yes its no pain for them , but its not always the safest option ), and often without needing much injection .
And if they do they can use numbing paste so it doesnt hurt as much .....i've never heard of a dentist that can't do it, he sounds like hes making excuses, waste of time his 5 years at dentistry school were !

Kelly, just pmed you - but the plan is for him to take all the antibiotics and if that hasn't helped the pain (cause he won't eat now), i will take him to the doctor and hope they can bump him up the list. Meanwhile, will get my step-mum riniging around wellington, and will get a second opinion here.
Rang around the oral surgeons and the hospital but had no luck there...although people are very sympathetic.
as for doing the fillings without general....he's a rather...stubborn child. it took about 15 minutes just to get him to open his mouth, so I truly believe doing the fillings may be better under general...but 6-12 months....just ridiculous.

Palmy sucks like that. I'd head to wellys and do it private if it were Daniel. Id refuse to wait that long, its a long time of pain for a little guy

Also , see if anyone does IV sedation , they can do an oral type one on kids (where they drink something instead of getting the iv line put in) and it relaxes them , they're almost completely asleep .
Another option if you're unable to find a dentist that does general

he ran around the house screaming after trying to eat something for tea. it was horrendous. Will call up tomorrow and try for a second opinion. in the mean time may start another thread for good dentists in wellington. and food taine can eat.

Hi
not sure of dentists in the wellington region sorry but there is a fantastic pediatric dentist in hamilton at the angelsea clinic her name is katie ayers, you could give her a call and see who she would reccomend you go to down there
personally i would phone around the schools and take him to one of them, you dont have to go back to the same one, the dental practice i work for sees children but i always reccomend parents try the schools first as personally & from experience with my girl the dental nurses are alot more child friendly than dentists, as that is their specialaty most dentists dont have alot of patience for small children either mainly as they dont have to do work on then very often.
my girl was the same she was very stuborn & would kick scream & bite i would have to hold her down at the dental nurse, but we ended up having work done under general and i would NEVER do it again that way the risks far outweigh anything else.
id say try the dental therapists again, they have ways of talking kids around and making them open their mouths etc they are trained to deal with difficult kids and if it doesnt work then they can also ring the hospital and try and get you moved up the list. but most of the time they dont even use local if they dont have to they are great.
most hospitals in NZ only do GA dental work 1 or 2 days a week and the waiting lists are long as its not just children it is elderly & disabled people also and people who physically cant go to another dentist.
anyway hope that helps

Aw I hope you find someone soon. How odd they said they wouldn't see under 10s, I took Spencer to my dentist and although he doesn't need them at the mo my dentist said if he ever does he can do them. I didn't get into how or whatever though as hopefully he won't need one.
I feel sorry for the little guy, I've had toothache now for many many weeks, had a cavity that didn't hurt but has hurt since the filling was done and after taking the wait and see approach I am gonna get it redone (dentist thought it might just take some time to settle)
With the foods I find hot or cold is what really hurts my tooth so maybe you could make sure that whatever he eats is a neutral temp, and also if any food gets stuck to the tooth (like the chocolate I ate earlier, ouchies) then that really hurts as well, so maybe nothing too sticky to eat.

mite be that your filling is too high sometimes even if its just a mm to high it can get really sore & just needs to be filed down a bit more,
usualy thermal hot/cold reactions indicate that the neve is packing up and sweet means theres a break in the enamel

Cool thank you, yeah it didn't hurt until he did the filling...doh, you dont' really go to the dentist to get given toothache. He is redoing the filling on Monday, it was on the side right next to the gum, he also took the mercury out of the top of the same tooth and redid that. So cos it was a bit of work he wanted to wait and see if it calmed down without redoing it, he said the hot/cold thing can happen after a filling for a while and that throbbing was a bigger concern.
