Topic: I want a Little Dog... Posted: 22 December 2007 at 11:10am |
went to Dh christmas do last night and there was a toy dog (one of those designer dogs which really is a mutt but cost a fortune) anyway it was so cool with the kids even rhyley...
So now I want one!! Does anyone know of any 'cheapish' Little dogs.. something like a Yorkshire terrier, Bichon, or crosses... I don't want a foxy though...
I promise it would come to a loving home where it would be pampered to bits. We don't have any cats but do have another dog - a boxer so he will always be a puppy to play with......

My mum breed miniature dacshunds for years, they're great little dogs, and don't mind if kids are a bit rough, they do suffer from little dog syndrome though and bark at anything bigger than them, and the breed is known for their loud bark.
A really great way to work out what you might like, is to go along to a local all breeds dog show, and talk to the breeders.
That's how we got our burmese cat .

Friends of ours have a miniature Yorkshire terrier and strongly advised us against getting one when we were looking for a pet. From what I understand most miniature dogs tend to have quite a few health problems due to their size - our friends have been in and out of the vet ever since they've had the little doggie. They are very cute but I think you should do your research first as multiple vet visits can cost a fortune and can be emotionaly draining too to see the little doggies suffer from multitude of health problems.
My 2 cents in anyways - I know they look super cute but we decided against getting one after I read more about the health issues the different breeds tend to have

thanks guys. We got told when we got a Boxer that they have health problems due to being so active so far so good though as Flynn is a fit bill of health
Hehe I guess it looked like I was acting before I was thinking but I have wanted a little dog for ages (just dh wouldn't let me) Now that dh has seen one with the kids he said its ok - but I am not allowed to spend too much money....of causemost of them cost heaps!

Sorry my2angels my mum doesn't anymore, (she passed away a few years ago). Suggest your mum get in touch with the local Dog Club they'll be able to put her in touch with a local breeder.
Here's a link to a list of breeders from NZKC http://www.nzkc.org.nz/onlinebreeders.html
Boxer's are great dogs AnnC, great with kids. Any breed with a shortened muzzle is going to have potential breething problems but not every dog.

meant to say.....they cost heaps at pet shops....don't ever buy a pup from a pet shop!!!!! we paid $650 for clyde, he's pure bred golden retriever with nzkc registration papers....without papers from a pet shop he would be over $1000

I've got a Jack Russell and she is AWESOME, and really good with the kids as well. THey are a bit full on at the start, but once they start puberty (heat/season etc) they calm down heaps. I love them and reccomend them highly, and, can I just point out, are NOT yappy and annoying like foxies. Lots of people get the two breeds mixed up, but JR's are much calmer!!

Jack Russells are quite cool dogs, they usually have really cool personalities. We always had JR's or foxies as a kid. JR's had funnier personalities but our foxies were actually calmer which is a contradiction to what fattartsrock just said hehe.
If you want a lil dog though keep an eye on trademe. There's so many puppies that show up on there. Or go to a breeder and ask if they have any puppies that dont make the grade for selling. Inlaws got a pedigree dog for $200 cause she apparently didn't make the grade but shes a wonderful dog.

Oh sorry Fluery, I didnt realise.
My friend had a boxer and he had epilepsy and kept having fits until he had a major one when he was two years old and died, was so sad.

I want a little dog too we have a pitbull but I want a nice wee puppy that will play with Jack and will eventually have puppies but I have no idea where to start.
Funny about the JRs my parents have one and shes crazy, growls at everyone and doesn't listen to anything. But she is great with Jack.
