Maybe its me ..maybe not?

I find that there are so many do's and dont's and be carefuls that it must be really hard for a new Mum to actually settle with her pregnancy and not worry about everything under the sun. (which I can tell a lot of people do)I try and chill out and realise that most things are normal and the old body is going through major changes.

I was talking to some older friends in Auck who had kids over 15 years ago and they were saying its ridiculous the amount of info that gets pumped into Pregnant Mums these days. They tend to think what it does is creates very cautious people who doubt themselves and dont listen to their instincts and bodies...

Interesting!

I totally agree with you.
Our mums wouldn't of had all these dos and don'ts and we all seem to be healthy and sane people. Well Most of the time anyway. lol

In saying that Im probably one of those people that should be a bit more "cautious" and listen to a few things but ah heck ....I dont have the time to worry bout stuff like I used to!! (which in some ways is a blessing as I think I could have driven my MUM nuts with all the things I went on about with Paige)

Yeah I suppose we should listen to some of that stuff. Its a bigger badder world nowdays compared to what our parents grew up in.
But as you said to start with kelly, our bodies tell us things for a reason

I wonder what the rate of infant mortality is like today compared with 30 or 40 years ago? I wonder how many babies today die from listeria compared to 30 years ago?

I think its all well and good to say ohmy mum did this and I'm fine but what if you weren't? Thirty years ago if you had morning sickness you would've been given themidolide (sorry sp!) that caused loads of babies ot be born without arms and legs. So to say it was alright for my mum is kinda misleading IMHO anyway.

There are an average of 2 cases of listeria in pregnant women per year. And listeria isn't always fatal to bubs. So the risk statistically is pretty small. Although fro myself I am such a nutter that any risk is too great so I don't eat anything even slightly risky!

I agree with teh info overload thing tho - especially working for OHbaby! I find out waaaay more than I need to know!

I do agree with you MrsCrispy!!! but also think sometimes people can be a bit OTT We have more information available to us nowdays as to what we should and shouldn't Do or eat and it is up to us to do the right thing.
Also now we have more access to ultra sounds and other bits and pieces like Amiosyntesis (sorry bout the Spelling), and better health care.
I think in the end its all about being sensible, aqnd making good decisions whatever they may be

i am finding out this pregnancy, due to visiting bbs and reading way more "real stories" than i should, that i am seeing such a wider view of things than is probably healthy. so of course i worry about things that much more, i need to trust my self and my body more, and stop obsessing!( i have done this before! i can do it again lol)

oh, xanthe has just come along and asked me to use this one... and this one . that has nothing to do with my post, and all about pleasing my girl.
Lyla - mum to

Xanthe - my big 4 year old
and
Jordis - 1 year old

bump

I think this is a really interesting topic. I get a bit peeved off reading all the no-nos - I mean is it really going to kill baby if I have smoked salmon once in a while? Or eat takeaway chicken? My GP (who's quite sensible) said even alchohol is a "funny issue" - it's a no-no here but it's a fact in Europe mums drink the occasional glass of wine every few days and still have their bubs OK. Personally I think that as long as one is sensible about things, everything should work out, right?

With Paige I did not know I was pregnant until I was 9 weeks on. I had a full on job ..was out partying with all the reps..drinking and having a few joints here and there (yes not good but that was life then for a bit) and I was also training two hours a day for a triathalon. The reason I did a pregnancy test was because I fainted on a cycle I was doing.

My daughter is not only very tall and very active and smart. She is beautiful and has recently been labelled "gifted" at school.

Now I was not drinking copious amounts and it definitely was not every night. I did not stop drinking when I found out either. I had the ocassional drink here and there. Have not smoked anything since then tho!!!

I understand we need to do everything possible to have healthy babies but sometimes I think we need to go with our INSTINCTS and do a bit of research and learn from other people before living to the gospel and freaking out about stuff that probably will never happen!!!

In saying all the above...I have had a total of 1 and a half glasses of wine this time and thats it. But more because I went off it and not interested anymore!
