Topic: What to expect from midwife Posted: 03 May 2006 at 6:46pm |
Hi Everyone
We had an appointment with our midwife yesterday. (I am now 14 weeks preganant and it was the second time I had seen her) She was lovely and answered my list of questions etc but I think I was expecting to be checked out more or something.
All she did was ask how I was (I am feeling really good now) and then she checked the babies heart beat and that was all. I had blood tests done by the doctor at 5 weeks preg and they were all fine. I think I would have expected to have blood tests done again now and maybe a urine sample or something.
Is this normal?

They usually do a urine sample at each visit, but that's more of an issue later on when they are checking for protein or sugar in your urine. But other than that it's just a general chat about how you are feeling, organising upcoming tests like ultrasounds and blood tests if needed, and then the heartbeat.
I am seeing my obstetrician for the first time next week, will be interesting to see if he does anything different to what the midwife does.

Yeah not much happens in the first few visits, just making sure everything is ok. My first midwife made me pee on a stick everytime but with this one Ive only just started since 28 weeks. Dont worry, soon things will be happening.

it all sounds pretty standard my first midewife made me pee everytime and so does this one it is all good. If you are happy with her then keep her cause good midwives are very hard to come by.

I only peed on a stick for the first time last night. Otherwise its just normally checking the heartbeat, my blood pressure and weight and thats about all, plus discussing whatever issues I may have or want to know about!

First time round at 11 weeks all I did was fill her in on my medical history and she located teh hartbeat and just asked me if I wanted to know anythign or had any questions, and juts gave me an info pack - second time at 15 weeks I peed on a stick, but generally I find my visits are pretty quick, just a general catch up sessions and a heart beat check (occassionally a pee on the stick) and then we are outta there?!?!
Sounds normal to me Katie!

Hi Katie,
My second appointment with my midwive was pretty much the same as what you had. I was supposed to have had a urine test but not sure why she didn't go ahead with it. She also checked the heartbeat.
