second question for all you wise mummies i've been told 2 different things by 2 different midwives and now i just don't know what to think! my midwife is away and left me with the form for an anatomy scan. she knows i'm hanging out for it and told me i could get it done from 18 weeks. her backup, who i saw after a fall down the stairs told me that it is better to wait til 20 weeks but couldn't explain why. does anyone know who is right?

I think they say between 18 & 20 weeks. We were told to wait till 20 for this scan because we wanted to check out if baby had a cleft and was told that things grow quite a bit in that time so you get a better picture. I couldnt wait and went at 19 weeks but with Kobe went dead on 18 weeks cos really wanted to see if he was a girl or boy.

   Hi ya,
The longer you leave it the more developed baby's organs are going to be which is what they are looking at. Leave it as close to 20wks as you can.

I'd agree with the others...I've just booked my one for 20weeks 2 days...hopefully will get a clear shot.
I figure the longer left the better the view. |

18 weeks - baby is approx 14 centimeters crown to rump, and 7 ounces in weight
20 weeks - 16 centimeters crown-to-rump, approx ten ounces in weight

2 weeks makes a lot of difference! Bear in mind also that this is likely to be your last scan before you have your bubs, so you want to be sure that you'll get the best, clearest pictures possible.

My midwife told me this morning that the scan MUST be done between 18-20 weeks, was quite insistent as I am going to be away in Australia then. I was 19w1day when I had the scan with Maya.

yeah no later than 20 weeks I think its because and not to worry anyone here but I dont think they can abort after 20 weeks incase something is wrong. this happened with my friend, she went at just over 18 weeks and there were major problems and she had to decide whether to abort or not within a week otherwise they couldnt do it past 20 weeks.

I was 27ish weeks when I had the only scan I had with Kiya (long story)... the obstitrician (sp?) told me that any later, they wouldnt have been able to see things clearly as Baby is too big, and curls up in the way.

Tastic/Trish had the same problem. She was told different dates by different people. Maybe you could ask her how it turned out?? |

I went exactly on the day I was 18 weeks because I was bleeding heavily two days prior to that. They saw every thing and measured every thing but could not tell the sex of the baby because she had her legs crossed. I am sure it makes no difference, except the fact that your baby would have grown a bit more.

for me it seemed to vary.... with my first (2002) it was 19 weeks but couldnt get a clear pic of heart so had to go back the following week. and then with my second the scan would of been in late 2003 they were adament i had to go in at 21 weeks.... this time i have been told around 19/20 weeks so booked in at 20 weeks.
