Topic: Travelling on a plane with toddler?? Posted: 23 April 2008 at 10:57pm |
Hi Ladies,
ANyone taken their toddler under 2 on a plane overseas on a 3 hour flight??
Hubby and I want to go on holiday in a few months to OZ and take Jaxon too.. We are worried about how he will behave on the flight.. Sounds like he has to sit on our knee and we just cant see him wanting to do this.. he will want to run around the plane??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. :)
Thanks.

I can't say I know what it is like to travel internationally with a toddler yet, but I know there are a few ladies on here that already have. I think though that you'll have your mind on so many other things anyway, that the flight will just whiz by! DD was only 4mos when we took her to oz so the flight was a breeze - we are going overseas again in less than two months but this time it will be 14 hours in the air so I will be watching this thread with anticipation.

Hi Kellie, i'm going to OZ in September with my boys (and its just me with them ).
Toys are a good thing to take (i'm making sure I have both Andrew's and Josh's toys), books if he likes them.
Something to distract him with taking off and landing is good too.
As for food, you usually can't take any on with you, but that does change and I *think* that so long as its not opened it is fine, but anything opened and not eaten needs to be disposed of once you land.
When are you flying and who with??

I've taken Michaela on several plane trips recently (all 1 hour) and found that the hard part is taking off and landing because they can't have the tray table down during those times. During the rest of the flight she was fine, we had book, toys and colouring in stuff for her, plus lots of little snacks and she was quite happily occupied.

Hi,
Thankfully my husband will be flying with us..We have decided we want to go for a couple of weeks, probably in August as we are thinking about moving there so want to check it out again and also doa bit of sight seeing..
I have lived in Oz before and loved it, just dont like the ideal of leaving family here.
Australia is something my husband has dreamed about for years.
Anyway in regards to the travelling, we were wondering whether to pay the extra 100 dollars for a seat.. Because Jaxon will be under 2 he is only 17.00 and does not get allocated a seat (air NZ) going by web site. so we presume he has to sit on our knee the whole time.. He just wouldnt do that.. He wont even sit on our knees for long at home.
If we do this, I wonder if we need a booster seat or something??
Sorry about the silly questions?? hehe.

Hi there,
DH and I took Zoe to Oz with us over xmas this year. She was 12mths. We took 2 bottles and a water bottle. One for take-off and One for landing (to help pop ears), books, toys and snacks. Luckly our flights also worked into nap times so she slept for 1.5hrs on the way over and slept for the entire flight back home. On the way over, Zoe (and I) walked up and down the aisles for a bit looking at all the different passengers. And she liked opening and closing the window blind.
I flew with Pacific Blue and I was allowed to take on as many bottles and as much food as I needed for Zoe during the flight. They were really good.
With baggage, Zoe was allowed 5kgs, which came off my allowance, but, the total of all her stuff is allowed to exceed the 5kgs, they just say its 5kgs. We took a stroller, port-a-cot, backpack, carseat, and her clothes. Does that make sense?

when you get to the counter BEG for a row with seat in middle....so he can have the room. OR pay for it...def worth it. You will get a lap belt - he will be attached to you for take offs and landings. I still feed ella a drink or bottle on way up and down....
Our trip to nelson we had ella walking already and DH got moved to an exit row (waaaayyyy down back) so we could have the two seats for ourselves - and she had a blast...at one point she walked to daddy and back and made eyes at everyone in between!
best toy - an air NZ coffee cup...she loved it! take a new toy or some new bits and pieces from $2 shop etc they have never seen before...might keep him more occupied and if get left behind or lost it wont matter. Let him look out the window. Smile at the people behind you - ella has habit of looking over seat, eyeing them up and going "hiiii" in a sweet you cant tell me off way! Smiles help them adore your child....I alway say sorry....but they never seem to mind...luckily!
take snacks - small bikkies etc...and a pump bottle etc so you dont have to call for food and drink when it is demanded!
Take a blanket or ask for one when you get on so if he wants to snuggle up with you he can.
then the flight will be over before you know it......

We flew with Emirates when we went to Aussie. Other than a little slow we found them fantastic. We had a bassinet seat as there were no other babies on the flight...altho we didn't use the bassinet the leg room was great.
They provided us with a back pack full of toys so my boy sat at my feet and played with them. He was also given a full meal....with them you can select what suits you from about 10 variations.
I flew on my own, the bit I found the hardest was in the departure area. He got bored there very quickly. He just wanted to run riot.
He found a gate where there were no departures and just ran around for ages!

In Auckland they have a lot of departure gates downstairs....we had like 3 in a row and he literally ran and jumped and climbed all over everything
The back pack was awesome, it had a colouring book with pencils a puppet you could dress up and some other crap. I just love Emirates and they have heaps of specials at the mo too

I am in Sydney at the mo with the kids.. it was just me and Dh and Rhyley on the plane (long story but other two went on a different plane with grandparents)
The flight over was ok - I thought there was gonna be trouble when We were taking off (and waiting to) as ZRhyley was crying and moaning as he had to stay on my knee - but he fell asleep - I knew keepin him up till we flew out was a good idea- we got a bulkhead row (thats the bassinette row) I was talking to the cabin attendent about if the plane was full and she said yes - but stroke of luck was had and there was on spare seat across from us so the man sitting in the seat next to Dh moved into that seat leaving us a spare seat which we made in betweenus - Rhyley slept till about an hour to go - they put the bassinette down - he was a wee bit too big for it but the cabin attendent droped the foot end and he slept quite happily. Rhyley was happy to stand with us and play but there was a toddler who mustn't of slept and walked around alot didn't bother anyone though.
Anyway once again the only time Rhyley got upset was when he was straped to me for landing.
Time changes haven't been too bad either.
Hopefully going home is as good as coming here its an earlier flight so not too sure he will sleep this time.

we flew with Air NZ - he was entitled to 20kgs luggage. We took our three wheeled valco with us - we just checked it in but did get offered to take it to the departure gate then they put it in with the luggage - as I wanted to wrap it (took my own bag and they gave me tape) I just checked it in and if you are flying from Auckland they have loan prams.
where abouts are you going?

We flew to Fiji with Nyah when she was about 15mths old. She didn't enjoying the take off and landings either. She stayed awake the whole time there, and on the way home she slept the whole way.
I suggest you make up a back pack for Jaxon of this favourite toys and maybe even let him choose a couple of things after you've gone thru customs.

yes they do. Rhyley got his photo done when he was a couple of months old so hes changed a bit - and he has it for 5 years.
My parents with the older kids just flew Emerites &ad only good things to say about them.. said they would pay the extra (depending how much ofcause) to fly with emerites again.

LOL Maya was 2 weeks old in her passport photo, she had her first flight to Oz at 8 weeks.
Gremlins are about 3 weeks in their passport photos but they were a bit older, 2 1/2 mths or so when they first flew.
IMO it was much, much harder when she got older, Syd-Bangkok was a bad flight, she was 20-odd months, and the worst ever flight we did with her was when she was 11 mths and walking, it was a chocka block flight from Syd to Auck and she was stuck on my knee for the entire 3 hours...

ETA" actually really shouldn't say that as all kids are really good travellers. Rhyley has been so good while over here sitting in his pram and jumping off and on trains etc.... lets hope he keeps it up
