Topic: Attn: Nurses, Plunket etc-What is this? Posted: 23 November 2008 at 10:42pm |
Long story short, Lucas has had a lump in his penis for a couple of months now, we are on public waiting list to see a Paed (6 month waiting list ...oh the joys) have signed him up for medical insurance on his own policy but since its pre-existing condition its not covered so alas we continue to wait.
Anyway the Dr. can't seem to tell me what it is, so I thought i'd throw it out there and see if anyone that works in the medical profession might have a clue, I noticed in another thread that a few of you ladies work with young children/babies so you might have an inkling.
I have a photo, a little graphic and not one I want to post publicly, but could you post a reply or PM me if you'd like to take a look and see if you can suggest what it may be ...the waiting to see a specialist is killing me, and I believe the lump is getting bigger. I'd hate to think we are waiting to be seen and in the meantime it's causing longterm damage or ???
ETA: the lump seems to be elongated, Dr thought it could be a cyst, but sometimes it almost looks like it's something to do with the 'tube'. I'm rather concerned, but don't think theres much I can do until we get our appointment? He doesn't seem to have many wet nappies anymore, not half as heavy as they used to be either.

keep going back to your GP with EVERY new symptom...ie not as many wet nappies. If his "condition" has changed you might get more priority with the paed. Also you could ring the paed and say you are on the waiting list but are really flexible if they have any last minute cancellations.

Definitely go back to the doc and tell him/her your concerns about the lack of wet nappies. If you don't get any joy then get a second opinion.
ETA: not that I'm any sort of medical person

I agree with the others. You're Lucas' advocate and if you think the lump is changing or getting worse, you have every right to ask the Dr to look at it again.
The decrease in wet nappies could be because the weather has been so much warmer, maybe he's using more of the fluid that's going in?
Either way though, its not worth leaving it if you're concerned.

Have you thought about taking him to see a pediatrician privately?
The initial appointments with specialists are generally no more than $150 and it might be worth it for your peace of mind and not having to wait 6 months.

Just spoke to my mum who is RN and she said take him in ASAP doc should have done samples for testing..........surprised he didnt...........even if its nothing better to be safe then sorry as i nearly was with my boy.......go to another doc until someone listens to you. does his urine smell?
Hang in there hun i know what its like.......if the lump hasnt gone away and its been there awhile then push hard for tests to be done..........dont be treated like 'just another overreacting mother' some med teams need a boot up the butt :-)

I wrote a whole lengthy answer at work and the pooter crashed so i lost it.
Keep taking him back, see a different doctor, really be asertive that you want something done (do you have a support person to help you with that? take someone with you).
If he is not peeing as much, is his stomach distended/ (round and hard) is he just not drinking as much. Has he had his urine examined for bacteria and cells and such.
Your instinct is that something is not right and you need to advocate for him that this is the case. Can you be referred to a child assessment unit at the hospital or a urology clinic, rather than waiting for the paed referral
Is there another doctor at your clinic who is more specialised in children?
In some cases you really need to be strong and assertive to get the right answers, if you make a nuisance of yourself he will not push this under the carpet for you
I hope you manage to get to the bottom of this for yurs and Lucas' sake
Take care
