Topic: feeling disappointed Posted: 08 May 2006 at 3:12pm |
It has been decided between the midwife and myself to put Rhiannon on one feed of formula a night as her weight gain is only around 50 - 75gms a week, we think that although i am getting enough milk through that it just isnt good quality even though i am doing everything right.
So i am feeling a little disappointed but i know within myself that its the best thing to do, and hopefully she will start to grow. Rhiannon is 4 wks this week and is only 275gms over her birth weight, it was expected for her to be at 6lbs by now.

sorry to hear that kazzle! at least you get to keep feeding her yourself too. you're doing your best for her and you should give yourself big credit for that.
fingers crossed she starts stacking on the weight for you.

I know it's hard to start supplimenting with formula, especially when you're doing everything right! Chin up, you are doing what's best for your girl, and that's what really counts.
 Kazzle We're here for you!

Hey Kazzle you are doing a fantastic job. The only thing i would say is have you spoken to a lactation consulatant? The only reason im asking is that in a post a few days ago you were very reluctant to go onto formula. Im not saying that your midwife isnt anygood its just that sometimes they dont have all correct info to help us mums make an informed decison. There are lots of natural things you can take such and fennal and there is a breastfeeding tea you can drink which helps improve your milk if breast feeding is the way you want to stay.
Re formula I would go to your gp and get some samples and see if she will take any of them.
Good luck with which ever way you go. Your doing whats best for you and Rhiannon. Dont feel pressured about weight too.

Sorry to hear that, more for the fact you are disappointed rather than having to formula feed becuase I dont see anything wrong with it but understand you must be feeling a bit down about it. Kobe was formula feed from just about day one and he is a BIG strong boy with no problems at all if that helps. We just nurture starter formula because the staff in the NICU said it was a lot gentler on wee ones tummies I think its whey based rather than dairy or something like that. Try some samples and see what suits baby though. Good luck, it sounds like you are doing a great job

its kinda a catch 22 for me you see 15mths ago i had my stomach stapled, and to date have lost just under 70kgs. without having that op there is no way i would have gotten pregnant (which has been a blessing) but the down side is that now i can not eat a lot, which is what we think is the cause for not having good quality milk.
I have just been talking/crying to my mum and she pointed out to me that in the past 15mths i have had a gastric bypass, gotten pregnant and had a c section so its probably not surprising that my body is just not coping with the demand baby is putting on it for milk.
I am already taking lactose AOK which is a liquid to help promote milk flow, i am making myself eat every couple of hours, i am only drinking water, but i think its just one of those things.

Kazzle you're doing so well with breastfeeding and it's not like you're going to completely change to FF, don't beat yourself up about it
Do ring the La Leche league even just to talk to someone, they're in the phone book. Explain your situation and see if they have any advice, they're good to talk to.

Hey Kazzel I know how you feel. I didnt have the best milk production when I had the boys which stressed me out big time and i tried everything. one of the neonat nurses suggested having a guiness (which I hate so had a larger instead lol) as beer can help. I tried the nursing tea. I tried expressing every 2 hrs and I also went on persription(sp?) medication as well as spending hours with the lactating consultant. I ate properly and drunk heaps of water and in the end none of it helped.
In the end some woman can produce the milk easily and some of us can't and for those of us that can't we seem to take on a huge amount of guilt for having to supplement with formula. Im all for b/f but from experience i feel we are so pro b/f that those of us that have probs or chose not to can get abit of a hard time.
Just remember you are doing whats best for your girl oh and Im with robyn - I used Nuture as well for Keegan

well we tried formula last night, (nuture), we have just brought some sachets to try so we dont spend heaps on a tin of something she wont eat.
anyway she guts down about 80mls then threw up (it was so funny as my husband was feeding her and he got covered )
She then had about another 10mls and just lay there, ive not seen her do this, she was content to just lie there and stare at me, i put her to bed at 10.45pm and she woke up at 5.45am, and feed from both sides and is now lying in her car seat, wide awake but very content,
I do have to admit though i was jealous of my husband feeding her last night as thats been my thing for 4 wks, and im pleased she was full last night but it has made me sad to think that maybe she was going to be hungry.

Hey Kazzle. I was the same as you. taine went to formula feeding during my uni course and suddenly he was different content baby. He was before, but always wanted the boob. Went to nanas and slept for hours and hours after a bottle. Although I've always been pro- whatever is good for baby, I felt guilty for not "trying harder". my milk was probably not as good as it could have been, due to running around after Jake all day. Anyway, after talking to mum, who told me not to be so stupid, and that having a happy contented FULLL baby was more important than me breastfeeding, I feel better now.

my friend struggled with her hubby feeding baby for a while to but in the end she just enjoyed the freedom it gave her. my DH loved being able to share the feeding and it helped him bond with Kobe even more. One of the good things about formula is you know how much they are getting which makes for a contented full little baby. Good on you for giving it a go.
