Topic: Funeral Question Posted: 05 October 2008 at 7:47pm |
Nigel's Aunty passed away on Saturday morning (we knew it was going to happen - but is still really sad). We have told Andrew that she died (best policy is to be honest we feel), but now I am not sure if I want to take him to the funeral. And we don't even know if Nigel will be allowed to go to the funeral (even thou he has been asked to be a pallbearer) because of what he has on that day.
If Andrew does come to the funeral with us, where would you sit in the church??

Honestly? Near the back. We had a christening to go to recently and we sat right at the back. A lot of others with kids did too and sure enough, we had a bored child on our hands. Made for an easy exit!

I'm taking Maya to SIL's funeral on Tues, and yesterday I took her to the house to see her aunty laid out. I wasn't 100% comfortable with that part of it but I didn't have much choice.
We'll probably just sit with Willie and the family/where we're told to coz she's pretty good at sitting still etc. I'm not taking the gremlins anywhere near the place tho!

I'd take him but do be sure to pack a small bag of activities for during the service (such as a few books, a magna doodle or colouring book and crayons) church services can be long and boring for littlies so it's always good to bring some entertainment which'll keep them quiet and occupied.

I'd also sit near the back and take a few little things to keep him occupied in case he gets bored.
Might also be worth talking him through what will happen before hand so he has an idea what to expect.

Man, I hope Nigel is able to make it. Blimmin Army!!
I took Ella to her G-grandma's funeral a couple of months ago. It worked out fine, though she and I took off and sat out the back pretty early on in the piece. We'd been up the front with DH, but Ella was very fidgety climbing over us, and was excited to see her relatives up there too, and started yelling across the aisle to her Poppa saying 'Hello Pop!' and asking where his dog was (he usually brings the dog around to see her). It was embarrassing walking out after that, but the staff there were brilliant, had a box of toys to keep her quiet-ish, even another room with sound from the funeral. And lots of the oldies there commented that it was nice to see a little child at the ceremony. Most importantly, the bereaved G-grandad was glad she'd been there.

We took all three girls to my grandmother's funeral a year ago. We took colouring in activities and lots of raisins to keep them occupied but there was also a slide-show at one point which was helpful too. They were actually really good but we still had to make a mid-funeral exit for toilet stops/nappy changes We did sit up the front - it was important to me because it was my grandma - but if the relation was not as close, I would sit closer to the exit. You could sit half-way down though, on the side, for a quick exit. But I think with Andrew's age, you'd probably be ok at the front if you wanted to.

We took Sam to his dads great aunts funeral a little while ago, he got a wee bit bored so I snuck him in and out by sitting near the back.
I didn't need to worry about him seeing his great-great aunt laid out ready for her funeral because my MIL took it upon herself to lift him up and explain to him that she was dead (he's 16 months old!!)
