Keziah is terribly constipated today (sorry, TMI) and has been miserable since the wee small hours of this morning.

What is the best thing you can buy to help get things going 'down there' again pretty much straight away??

I've heard of Lactulose...is it any good??

Normally we just give her a piece of orange and within an hour she's gone, she's been twice but is still quite unhappy in that department so I'd like to get something else to try..

Thanks so much

From a mummy in need

Yep prunes, kiwi juice or if she is really stuck then lactulose but only give about 3ml to start with otherwise you will end up with the exact opposite problem.
Hope she is feeling better soon, I know how awful it is when they are constipated.

Sleeping is good it will relax her muscles. Umm not sure if you have to boil them for Keziah...Lycan is 2 and he just eats them....

Apparently pear juice is good too, it helps to soften the stools. If you have a can of Pears maybe give her a bit of the juice from that...

She might just be exhausted from having a sore tummy and maybe she didn't sleep well last night. If she seems really lathargic though its best to take them to the doc cos that can be a sign that they are ill.

yep just boil them up Neeks and then use a little bit of the water/juice. we keep a pump bottle in the fridge so we always have some on hand when needed. works great here too.

Kiwicrush is good, you can get that from the freezer section at the supermarket.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I also found when I bought prune juice that it was only available in quite big bottles, so I froze the rest in ice cubes to use later if she ever needed it again.

Prune juice works for Oli too. We used Lactulose when he was a wee bubba and it was good but we found we needed to use for a few days to see results. I dont bother boiling the prunes, just put some in a mug (2 or 3) then pour over boiling water and let them stew. Once cool I just put in a bottle (rather than a sippy cup)...that way he will def drink it.

ETA - the other things that we were told to do when he was little....lie her flat on her back and hold her feet and move her legs in a cycling motion - if that makes sense, also try rubbing her lower tummy in a clockwise direction.

We've used Lactulose a few times. It doesn't help them go but it does soften it so that when they go it is not so painful.

Thanks ladies, your all gems... will buy some prunes first thing if things haven't improved over night

She was a little dehydrated so I've syringed some water into her (the only way she'll take it) it was only 12 mls but that's better than nothing right?? , and have given her some pamol and a bottle and she's now in bed... and so far so good she's settled so fingers crossed all round in our household tonight

MIL is on standby in case we need to rush to Starship in the middle of the night

Yep something is better than nothing. You can get some stuff called paedialyte from the chemist that helps rehydrate them quicker. We had to syringe it into Spencer when he had rotovirus cos he was refusing to drink anything. Is about $13 a bottle and worth it if she is refusing to drink.
