Similar to a christening.  Hubby and I are both christian, and we wanted her dedicated (basically saying that we promise to do our best in raising her, and we'll teach her about God and help her grow in her own spirituality).  We didn't declare that our own beliefs are now hers (I think some ceremonies label the child a 'christian' afterwards) because she has to make her own mind up on that.
