Grr when people use the 'coke is cheaper than milk' argument it gets on my nerves! Water is cheaper than Coke And if you really have to pump your kids full of sugar go with Raro!
We're strictly water here- in our house coke is an adults drink, just like beer and wine.

I can't beleive that parents would be so silly as to let their babies have any type of fizzy drink, esp an energy drink I wouldn't even drink that crap myself, an apple or a cup of blackcurrant juice is going to give you more energy than a bottle of V. I suppose it's the power of marketing.
I'm never quick to judge though when I see children with interestingly coloured bottles. Obviously sipping from a V bottle's a given that they're drinking something that's no good for them but someone mentioned a red cordial in a bottle. If the child had a UTI the parent may have been giving it diluted cranberry juice.
When Michaela was 1 she was anal retentive for several months and on docs advice we had to try everything to induce diaorehha (sp?). As well as the prescribed laxatives she was given heaps of bottles of all sorts of liquids. Her brown looking liquid was diluted prune juice and the green one was kiwi crush. The worst thing is getting accusing stares from ignorant (albeit well-meaning) strangers when you're just trying to help your child who is suffering from an extremely uncomfortable and painful condition.

I was at the foodcourt last week, sitting behind a lady with a 5 month old baby, She was screaming because she was so hungry so the mother started feeding he the egg out of her egg sandwhich.. The baby only got 2 mouthfuls, but she was so hungry she almost ate the spoon!

I think I might be one of those bad parents then.
McKayla was given water and diluted juice before a year. And I think her first gassy cooldrink sip was at about 18 months but cant remember.
If we are out and have a gassy cooldrink she can get a sip of ours. If she asks for her own we dilute it to about 1 to 10 with water and she is fine with that.
On her own she prefers booby milk, milk and water and about once a week will ask me for juice. I will say about once every 6 weeks or so she will get a sip or two of gassy cooldrink as we generally dont have it in our house.
We do stuff with her in moderation. I dont want her to be one of these kids that is never allowed it and when they get invited to a party goes totally wild at the cooldrink and sweets table as she is never allowed it.
So me bad parent.

OK so I certainly wouldnt be giving my 1 year old V! Not going to say my kids havent had fizzy though, yes they do in moderation, we drink it on the weekends and they are allowed a wee bit too. NOT coke though and nothing red lol. Not the baby obviously though lol! And certainly water and milk are the only other choices to drink. Along with that goes the tooth brusing thing, DS has seen all the gorey pics that the dental nurse shows with rotten teeth from fizzy and sugary drinks and they are both good at brushing their teeth.

problem is , once you give your child a taste of juice etc, they are more likely to like it, thats what happened with Caitlyn , my friend has only ever given her child water ( and milk) and thats all her child now (whos 5 ) likes , if you offered her juice she would turn it down.

I really do think it depends on how you do it. My dad allowed us beer from a small age in a tot glass and I dont like alcahol now at all. Same with McKayla. I prefer my water but we had fizzy drinks as kids. McKayla actually comes and asks for water.
She does ask for stuff sometimes but when you give her an alternative I will say about 80% of the time she goes for the healthy thing. If I take a fruit and she has a sweet in her mouth she spits it out and wants my fruit.
I have seen kids (in our family) that came to M's birthday party that is never allow sweets and literally didnt eat any of the food but went wild as the parents started to allow them at 3. McKayla had exactly 3 sweeties and 2 small pieces of cake (and I do mean like really small.) and she was satisfied and didnt wanted juice but water. These kids were stuffing themselves ect and to me that just leads to unhealthy eating in future.

Man, us parents really are faced with a lot of decisions, huh?
We were at PIL's last night. MIL offered to cook up some potato and silverbeet to give to Hannah. I said no to silverbeet as she's too young for it. So she said she'd just do potato (after saying she'd be fine, if I allowed silverbeet).
Anyway. She cooked up the potato and put it through the sieve and added BUTTER to it "to make it nice and creamy"
She didn't understand that at 4 months old Hannah's too young for dairy.
"Mark was fine when I gave him butter as a boy..."
SHE'S MY CHILD!
Anyway.
No kid needs sugar. They're hard enough to get to sleep as it is!

I gave McKayla tea at about 7 month onwards. Redbush (rooibos) tea without sugar and milk and she still drinks it now and then.
Kept her regular and if she showed any sighs of an illness or anything I just gave it to her. It has a lot of good stuff in it without the caffiene. So not all tea's are actually bad and in SA it is quite normal to give tea (without milk and sugar) to babies when they start solids.

Maya has lemonade on occasion, maybe once a week, the only time she has juice is when we are out and the rest of the time she has water. She's never been a milk drinker, I think that's a hang over from not being allowed it for the first 3 years of her life.
Gremlins get water, the only time they get juice is at Mainly Music where the juice is actually very watered down colorfree cordial. It's their once-a-week treat.
But Coke, V etc. are no-nos!

Zaara has Just juice with water....and we gave that to her after 18 months or so I think...may be a bit later. She has milk and water. No fizzy drinks for her.
I was at muffin break and saw two toddlers one a bit older that Zaara and the other may be 14-15 month old. Both were holding those G Drinks (Powerade type drink) green in coolor and drinking out of it. The younger one could hardly hold on too it as it was the biggest bottle.....I pointed it out to DH and he just shook his head.
Kids already have enough energy they dont need extra....Arrrgggg

this has been bugging me for a while.
i dont think giving your kids fizzy drink makes you a bad parent...
it may not be a good parenting choice tho...
a bad parent is one who neglects or mistreats their child on purpose.

I remember having diet coke in a bottle thats how long I have been drinking it and now im a total addict!!
Have not allowed Neosha to have it! At times have offered apple juice watered down 10 to one but now have cut it out all together she really only spilt it on the floor anyway lol.
She can have as much water or milk as she likes DP told me last night she can have as much as whatever she wants when she is a teenager
I am willing to make small exceptions at bday parties and stuff I think thats the time kids deserve to run wild!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deb...I dont think if you were giving them Fizzy drinks (as in coke, sprite etc) every so often and of little quantity its bad parenting...but an energy ( V, G etc) drink bottle full of the drink that the kids cant even pick the bottle up?? Hmm...and also I forgot to mention....that I couldnt see the parents so not sure where they were. The older kids was pushing the younger to a direction but no adult was around...Again its a huge mall where the hell are you?

oh sorry, so its ok to give them coke with caffeine but not v and only if you are with them?!
and i must be a bad parent then too cause i have been in a mall and let gabriel push toby or his 7 yr old cousin push him and havent been right next to them either and unless you knew i was his mum you would think a parent was there.
i think we need to be careful about such sweeping statements and assuming bad parenting when we dont know all the facts. after all who on here has thought they were being judged for doing something they werent cause some one didnt have all the facts.
