Topic: Arghhh our wedding rings!!!! Posted: 22 April 2008 at 11:24am |
My SIL *helpfully* told me that the best way to clean diamond rings is a bit of janola and water. She has worked at a jewellers for ages so trusted her advice. Anyway I guess you probably only dip them in for a minute or so but silly me thought I would leave them to soak - then promptly forgot about them End result is DH's ring has all these horrible marks all over it (as does mine) but jeweller said they should come off with a proper professional clean. My engagement ring on the other hand, has actually broken at one point and one of the diamonds in the channel has fallen out Luckily it was when I was holding it so I didn't lose it. They are going to ring me with a quote to fix it. So my advice is DON"T USE JANOLA TO CLEAN PRECIOUS RINGS!!!!!!!!!

Eek! No - I'd heard that toothpaste was the thing, and I've tried that and it really makes them sparkle, but after losing my diamond about 6 months ago, I think I'd only go the professional route myself from now on!

Oh no! The best thing I find is hot soapy water and I have one of those toothbrushes that 'pulse' and I give them all a good scrub with that (its an old toothbrush )- makes them sparkle and the vibrations from the brush helps loosen the dirt.

Eeekkk , I wouldnt of thought any kind of bleach would be good for rings etc
I use proper jewlerly cleaner on my engagment rings and such, Im too paranoid to use anything else. DF would kill me if I wrecked my ring lol and I would cry.

Thanks guys, hopefully it won't cost too much to fix or I might have to contact our insurance company.
Annie, you could have told me it was Handy Andy before I did it lol!!!!!
Unfortunately little ol' Cambridge doesn't have MHJ and I'm not sure what the fancy jewellery shops would charge just for a clean. Guess I'll ask them when I pick ours up.
I didn't actually do my wedding ring as I haven't taken it off since getting married so it was just my engagement rine, so my finger isn't feeling too bare lol. But a bit of a laugh - DH was busy gloating last night that the owner of a house that he did a job at (he's a carpet layer) rang the company he works for and told one of the ladies there that he was a bit of alright!!!! I think I'll have to get onto the jewellers and get his ring back pronto
