Topic: asthma part two Posted: 20 May 2006 at 7:40am |
So Jake has beenhaving an inhlaer and to get it in, we virtaully have to sit on him. He gets hysterical and it is NOT a pleasant experience for anyone involved.
So we went to the doctor again. After gettting fobbed off by the doctors new "radius Palms", decided to go to City Doctors (for those of you not in Palmy - they were on the news for giving the wrong prescription drugs to a little girl - or at least the pharmacy was).
the doctor was FANTASTIC! Said that a diagnosis of asthma is under-3s actually has a 95% mis-diagnosis rate as so many other things cause those asthma like symptoms, so while he MIGHT have asthma, he also might not. I descirbed the dilema of the inhaler and he said not to worry, if it was getting him that upset it wasn't helping. Then gave me some medicine to clear up his chest. He was so good with Jake and Jake didnt' cry at all.
then we went over to the pharmacy, who obviously have had a shake up after the incident. The pharmacist came over and told me ALL about the drugs, when to take them, side effects, what to look for if he reacted to it. Asked me if I had any questions and told me to ringif I did later.
All in all, a fabulaous experince and we were in and out in less than an hour.
It cost me $8 there rather than free, but we got soooo much better service than last time
"he's got asthma - get out"
that I will go there again no problem - I now feel as though I am working for them in marketing.

Glad you had a better experience this time around Liz ! Funny how exceptional service makes you want to tell everyone about it, just goes to show how powerful word of mouth can be for businesses etc. Can't say I've got any other advice though, but wonder if you use a vaporiser in his room?

its crazy the different help/service you can get aye?! my oldest girl has had asthma for coming up 1 1/2 years. and to start with we couldnt get the inhaler into her either, there was soo much struggle and i often had to get hubby home form work during the night to help me hold her down when she had asthma bad.
thankfully after her 3rd hospital admission she started to realise that the inhaler actually helped her and we were given a preventer and her asthma has been so good under control with no bad bouts for at least 6 months, she has her preventer morning and night and we give her her blue inhaler whenever she starts to show signs of a cold or slight wheeze.
asthma in kids is horrible, im sending you a virtual
take care, im pleased things are going better now.

It is horrible to have to hold your kids down to give them something while trying to explain that it will help them. I have that with jaidyn and his eye drops and now when he sees the bottle he freaks.
Good on you Liz for getting a second opinion. Sometimes I think doctors just give us a diagnosis to shut us up and send us on our way.
Im glad you have got it sorted now. You must feel soooooo much better

Maya has been on and off ventolin fo rthe past few months, and her allergy specialist (at $100 bucks a visit!) said the same thing as your doc Liz - that it's impossible to accurately diagnose asthma in little kids, he even went so far as to say under 5. When Maya is 5 he wants to put her on this machine which will give him a reading on the ocndition of her lungs. He seems to think that she *might* get asthma even tho she doesn't have a wheeze at all.
Re: the inhaler, Maya used to be a nightmare with it, but we found it worked wonders to use an empty inhaler (or take the cyclinder out) and an old/spare spacer and mask so she can give her Fuzzy Bubba the inhaler while she has hers. Just a thought.

Jake had taken to asking for the inhaler. I thought he might like it if he could play with it. However, he hid it places. I found it in the bath a couple of times. monkey!

Thats great you got proper answers this time. We were told they couldnt diagnose ashma under 2 years old, they kept treating Kobe for it when he had bronchialitis but it made no difference and so far this winter he hasnt been sick so cant of been asthma. my 3 year old neice was diagnosed when she was about 2 and she definatly has it but seems happy with her inhaler thankfully.

Maya is also apparently 'high risk' coz she has such a strong history of allergies, but there isn't any actual asthma on either side so we'r ehoping she'll be all good. She has only had bronchiolitis (sp) once and croup once so far which is pretty good.
If only her emphysema-ridden father would give up smoking we might all have healthy lungs! Mind you, he smokes less in winter - could be to do with the fact that it's cold and wet outside, and cigarettes don't burn too well in the rain...

Honestly Ana, if he won't take it, and like jake, gets so upset if you force it negates any benfits, i would go BACK to the doctor and explain. I know that there is liquid ventolin but not sure if it's used too often nowadays.
Also, the Asthma and respiratory society can give advice regarding inhalers.

Thank god most doctors are free for under fives right?!
Jake still has a little cough and his anti-biotics run out today. I'm going to give him a few moer days and then go back if he still is coughy.
Funnily enough, everyone says that daycare babies get more colds. My gf's little boy and jake are about 5 days apart ( I think he shares a birthday with Hannah). Jaske went to daycare (still does once a week), but her little boy has never. they have had EXACTLY the same amount of colds.
Also, he was in a walker, Jake wasn't. They crawled and walked at ERXACTLY the same time. About two days apart I think. "they" are full of crap
