Topic: Natural Family Planning Posted: 04 September 2006 at 9:09pm |
Who's done it and it is quite reliable? I have stopped taking my pills because of this oestrogen deficiency thing and I feel so much better for not taking them. I have never really liked taking anything, but dont want injections or implanted devices - mainly cos of side effects. I've read a little bit about it all on the net and it says you need to go to lessons... around $160. So if any of you have done this how did you get started?

thats all we did in between kids. I knew when i was ovulating because (sorry TMI) i would get a differnt discharge and basicly it was at the same time every month. So natural family planning and the withdrawal method worked for us. it was just something that we did though i didnt do any courses or anything.

Is this the place you went through? I have used it for ages and have found it really good. I like the idea of not putting all those hormones and chemicals into my body and if you think about it, you can use it forever and the pill will cost you alot more than that if you take it for a few years...
I've been doing it so long now I can recognise the signs really easily and its supposed to be more reliable than the pill if you do it right

my Canadian girlfriend and her hubby went on a course and use natural fmily planning. She takes her temp every morning and does little calculations and stuff. If you do it religously, I think it IS pretty reliable, and considering the amount of birth control, $160 actually isn't too bad. I'd love to but Lewis is amazingly paranoid about getting me pregnant again so we might leave it for a while

When I add it up again its not so bad - I had forgot to add in the doctors fee! May look into it a bit further now. So Jen did you do the course thingy?

Sure did- you can go to an educator and they take you through it all or you can also do it by correspodence. Its really easy once you get the hang of it. They help heaps because they analyse your chart and talk you through it so you know exactly what to look for for you, since everybody is different. All I know is that I used this as contraception for over 4 years and never got pregnant and my lovely darling daughter was conceived on the pill! Now we are trying to concieve I've just switched it around

My friend has got a book on this, i'll ask her the name of the book for you. It's got charts at the back of the book that you could copy to do the charts.

The name of the book that she is usiong is Taking Charge of your Fertility. Another friend has used it to get pregnant as well and is now (for 15 month) using it to not get pregnant.

Thats my plan too Rach I started taking my temp this morning. Hopefully not TMI, but do you take your temp vaginally? I am looking for that book that Becks mentioned but doesnt seem to be in stock in NZ but there are lots of very helpful websites too. I am loving not being on the pill - I feel so much better and again hopefulyy not TMI but I have never wanted "relations" so much before - dh cant keep up!! lolol

Yeah we don't really have that much relations about once or twice a week poor ben. I don't actually take my temp i just guessed when i o'd which isn't really the smartest way. And we kinda didn't use condoms when i suspected anyway which is pretty dumb as well. I might look into taking temps and doing the whole hog. I don't have a computer at my pad so is it hard to graph them all or is it easy? I hate the pill

Temps on their own aren't particularly reliable- you have to take into account discharge and position of your cervix to get a reliable reading. If you don't really mind getting pregnant again then just wing it but if you want to seriously use it a a form of contraception then definitely educate yourself some more- I personally can't have unprotected sex from cycle day 5 until 2 days after I ovulate (so for usually about 11 days per cycle we have to use another form of contraception). If you are producing any kind of mucus at all then it can be possible for you to get pregnant and some women can ovulate multiple times per cycle. Every person is different and sperm can live for up to 5 days inside you so you have to really know what your doing or not mind if you get pregnant.
And you take your temp normally- either in your mouth if its an oral one or in your ear if its one of the fancy ones You have to take it the moment you wake up- at the same time every morning before you get out of bed. Lots of different things can effect it too- late nights, drinking, stress... etc etc
