Topic: Can any one help? Posted: 19 June 2006 at 8:11pm |
I should have asked my midwife but I completely forgot when she came to see me.
So the question is can I get an IUD put in when I have had a c-section?
Spencer is still firm on the whole "No Snip-snip" debate and I am still too young to get a tubal done so the very next best thing I reckon is an IUD.
When I was pregnant my doctor told me I could get it put in 6 weeks after the birth but I'm really worried that it will catch in my wound if I get it done then.
SO does anyone know if that can happen?
I REALLY don't want to get pregnant but since I couldn't hold out any longer we have been active again for the last week so its something I really have to worry about really soon.

I know that 6 weeks after having a baby you can have a "Mirena" put in. It will last for up to 5 years, you only have to have it checked 6 weeks after having it put in and then yearly checks until it comes out. The only down side to this is the price, $350 for the IUD and then on top of that is the cost to get it put in. It has to be put in by a gyno that has the right credentials as not everyone does. To get around the price you can be eligable for it for next to nothing if you have very low iron levels (and the testing can't be done while pregnant, don't know if breastfeeding counts) and then the only cost is the insertion. Ring your midwife and ask for some info in it or go to the website, (goggle Mirena and it will come up). Good luck thou.

Hmmm I can't afford the mirena, I have looked at it but just too expensive for all in one go for me. And I definitely won't qualify for subsidising because I had a really high iron level with this pregnancy & when I had them my periods were pretty light.
And I would still be worried about the device sticking in my c-section wound as they are the same shape as the usual IUDs.
Does anyone know if you have to wait until you get your period again if you don't get the IUD put in at 6 weeks?

Don't think so, I know when I was going to have it put in I was to have a pregnancy test just to make sure I wasn't. The gyne advised that it is best put in after your period, so I don't know how that would work with just having a baby. I'm sure your midwife will know ask her next time she visits.

I got an IUD put in - but was a while after I have my 2nd. Didn't agree with me and I ended up in Hospital with very major pains. so they took it out and I am not allowed to ever have one again. I like the idea of the one you get pt in your arm - can't remember the name of it- so might try that afterwards. Oh and although this is my 3rd but my husbands 1st he has actually agreed to get the snip - my change his mind when I get really serious about it :-)

Well I asked my midwife and she reckons it shouldn't be a problem and I'm healing up quite quickly on the outside so she said its probably the same on the inside.
So now all I have to do is wait until Blaire is nearly 6 weeks old & make an appointment.
