Topic: Solids - When to start 3 meals?? Posted: 28 November 2007 at 1:22pm |
Daniel is on solids. He has lunch and dinner at the moment and has done for over 3 weeks. He's having around 1/2 a tin a dinner time of veges and at lunch maybe 5 tea spoons of fruit - he would eat more but still is a bit iffy on the taste of fruit - many amusing faces are pulled when he eats it lol..
He's started waking up earlier in the morn, like about 5:30 hungry, when he usually sleeps til 6:30-7:30.. so should I start giving him breakie as well? Plunket haven't talked to me at all about solids so I'm not sure when to introduce more food etc.

Hey Stacey the last time I saw plunket she said to give Spencer 2 meals for two weeks and then would be ok to up it to 3. So by that reasoning I would say you would be fine to introduce brekkie now. She also said just to slowly up what they have at each meal and that they will normally let you know when they have had enough. But she did say if they are being piggies and just eating eating eating then you have to use your best judgement so as not to overload their tummies.
I think Spencer is probably having about 1 tin at each meal, sometimes he polishes it all off and other times he has about 3/4. I always give his bottle first to make sure he is getting enough milk each day.
I will be starting to give Spencer brekkie this weekend, which will be about 2.5 weeks since he went onto 2 meals a day.

Im just winging it really!! lol (with a little advice from Astins pead!)
Astin was only having solids for breaky but was starting to show signs that he wanted solids for dinner too! so we have been doing that for the past few days and he is sooooooooo much more settled for it!

lol I'm winging it too. I offered C some breakfast this morning but she wasn't really interested so I'll try again later.
I don't think you can really go wrong, if he eats it yay he wanted it, if he doesn't then he doesn't need it.

We just had our 7 month Plunket visit yesterday and was told to start Sam on 3 meals now, so it is really whenever they are ready. Basically they just need to be on the 3 meals a day by the time they are 8 months old as this is when the food comes before the milk.

From memory, I started Charlotte on breakfast at about 6 months and she loved her creamy banana porridge (she still does love it when she has it for a treat!). If Daniel seems hungry, then definitely try it. He will let you know if he is ready for it or not by his reactions!

Do you think the earlier you start, the earlier you will need to introduce more? Bella's been on solids for 5 days (just one meal around late afternoon), but I'm also wondering when I up her to 2 meals a day. The plunket book says after about 2 weeks you can give it a go, but she has started solids early - not the 6 months that plunket recommends. *Sorry, Stacey, didn't mean to 'thread-jack' *

Spencer started solids early too, I wasn't sure what to do and he had been having one meal a day for about a month when I saw plunket at 5 months and she said was fine to move up to 2 and then another 2 weeks and go up to 3 (if he seems ready).

I started Jack on his third meal (breakfast for him), when he started waking soon after his morning bottle because he was hungry. He ate it all up quickly so figured he was ready

I may try breakfast for him tomorrow morn then.. I'm kinda glad he doesn't polish off a tin yet. He doesn't have a massive appetite even for milk (his bottles are 150mls) so I expect him to be the same with solids until hes a bit bigger

We just had our five month check. Caleb is having breakfast and dinner and Plunket suggested getting him up to three meals by the time he is six months old.

with my experience, no. Cailin was on solids at 4.5 months and had one meal for over a month before we bumped her up to 2. I think it took at least a month if not longer to get her to eat a whole can.
Jeremy started at 6months and after a few days of not eatting anything he just got it and went mad, within 2 weeks we were up to 2 meals a day, size = to a can each meal and he would eat more if I gave it to him.

I agree too, Daniel started early because he needed a few more calories and whilst he really enjoys his food (most of it anyway lol) he doesn't eat a full tin yet and hes been on solids for probably 5 weeks. Half a tin is his about his limit.
But on another note, he had breakie this morning. Gave him some baby rice with fruit.. funny face pulled with the first mouthful cause he always does that with fruit but he ate a bit. So will see how he goes tonight with his extra solids feed and see if it helps him sleep right through again.

Good luck, Stacey! Yeah, Bella seems quite content with the one meal at the moment and is still sleeping through, so I'll just leave it until she becomes ravenous again

Rohan has been on solids for about a months now and isn't keen on breakfast. He loves veggies but won't east fruit apart from bananas. I tried him on some meat this week and he hates it! Trouble is this has out him off veggies and he's back to waking twice a night!!
I thought I had my night's sleep back then for a couple of weeks - oh well

The best way to get meat into Daniel (we use the country chicken one from only organic) is to mix say 1 tsp with about 5 tsps of like carrots or something to disguise it and then slowly up the amount of meat ones then they don't notice it

We made up a mixture of minced beef, kumura and apple that plunket gave us and Sam can't get enough of it. The recipe on in the baby food thread in the recipes section.
